Chapter 4
The temperature in the room seemed to have dropped to absolute zero. The only sound left was the sharp click of my heels against the floor.
Step by step, I walked toward the couple sitting in the center of the living room.
Dennis’s expression turned from shock to pure fear, his skin becoming pale. He instinctively let go of Jessica, as if he wanted to
get up, but when his eyes landed on Jessica’s tear–streaked face, he hesitated, torn between guilt and fear.
In the end, that fear turned into a laughable, blustering boldness. He stayed put and kept on staring at me, as if that could hide
how anxious he was inside.
Jessica’s pupils shrank the instant she recognized me, but she recovered quickly. After all, this was Dennis’s territory, and she was surrounded by so many of his friends. Instead of backing down, she clung even tighter to Dennis, crying louder.
“Dennis, that’s her… She’s the one who bullied me…” She sobbed as she shot me a look that was both spiteful and triumphant, as though she were saying ‘See? He’s still protecting me!‘.
I ignored her, keeping my focus squarely on my dear brother. “Dennis, I’m talking to you. Didn’t you just say you would make me kneel and apologize to your girlfriend?”
Dennis swallowed hard, his lips trembling, but he couldn’t say a word.
He was afraid of me.
He had always been afraid of me ever since we were kids.
He knew who really called the shots in this family.
His friends all exchanged confused looks, not sure what was going on.
One of them, a trust fund kid with his hair bleached blonde, stepped forward, probably trying to show off for Jessica. “Who do you think you are, talking to Dennis like that? If you know what’s good for you, apologize to Jessica, or else…”
He didn’t even get to finish his sentence when my bodyguard already stepped forward with a blank expression, blocking me from the group. The pressure alone made the blonde kid shut up instantly.
I walked around my bodyguard and stood over Dennis, looking down at him. “So, you’re really not going to give me an explanation?”
Dennis finally summoned the nerve to stand, pulling me aside and lowering his voice. Half pleading, half annoyed, he said, “Theresa, what do you want from me? Must you embarrass me in front of my friends like that? Jessica didn’t mean it. She just has
a bit of a temper. Can’t you just let it go?”
I looked at him, suddenly finding it almost laughable.

Chapter 4
Let it go?
After she had had me beaten within an inch of my life and tried to extort a hundred thousand dollars from me?
He just wanted me to let it go?
“Dennis White,” I addressed him by his full name, “Am I a joke to you right now?”
“I…” He stammered, his eyes darting away.
Just then, the sharp sound of police sirens from outside the manor cut through the mood.
Everyone froze.
A group of uniformed police officers walked in, their faces serious.
The lead officer scanned the room before locking eyes with me. “Excuse me, are you Ms. Theresa White?”
I nodded. “Yes, that’s me.”

He pulled out an arrest warrant and turned to Jessica. “Jessica Thompson, you are under arrest for assault and extortion. Please cooperate and come with us to the station for the investigation.”
