Chapter 5

All the color instantly drained from Jessica’s face. She shrieked in terror as she held on to Dennis’s arm as though it were her last lifeline. “Dennis! Help me! I don’t want to go to the police station! Say something! Tell them it was a misunderstanding! It was all just a misunderstanding!”
Dennis’s face was also extremely sour. His girlfriend was about to be taken away by the police, with all his friends watching. This was even more humiliating than being publicly slapped.
He turned around, gritting his teeth as he glared at me and said. “Do you really have to go this far?”
I stared at him coldly, not saying a word. He took a deep breath, then forced a smile as he turned to the officers. “Officer, it’s just a misunderstanding. This is my sister, and that’s my girlfriend. They had a little disagreement, but I’ve already taught Jessica a
lesson.”
He tried to put himself between Jessica and the police. “It’s late, and there’s no need to cause any trouble. We can handle this
ourselves since this is all just a family matter.”
Then he turned back to me, his tone sounding as though he was almost pleading. “Can’t you just show me a little respect? Make
the officers leave, and we’ll sort this out at home.”
He thought I would give in like all those other times, sacrificing everything for his laughable pride and respect.
He thought I still cared about our so–called sibling bond.
But what he didn’t realize was that whatever affection I had had left was long gone after I had been locked in that filthy storage
room and beaten within an inch of my life.
I looked him in the eye and spoke clearly to the officer. “Officer, this is not a misunderstanding. The hospital has documented all
my injuries, and they have the reports. She extorted a hundred thousand dollars from me, and the bank has the record for the
transfer. I demand this be handled according to the law immediately.”
My words hit Dennis like a powerful slap across the face. His expression froze, shifting from begging to surprise, then to disbelief
and humiliation.
The police ignored his protests, stepping forward as he took the handcuffs out. Then, they cuffed Jessica while she was still
screaming. “Let me go! Do you know who I am?! My boyfriend is Dennis White! Dennis! Help me! Dennis!”
Jessica was dragged out of the manor by two officers, crying and struggling the whole way.
Her hysterical screams echoed through the now silent living room, and it was especially disturbing.
Dennis stood there, frozen like a statue.
All his friends watched with a mix of pity, mockery, and morbid curiosity.
His pride had been utterly shattered by my own hand at this moment, with me crushing the fragments under my boot.

Finally, after Jessica’s cries had faded away, Dennis turned around to face me. His once–clear eyes were bloodshot now, blazing with anger and resentment.
“Theresa White!” He shouted, his voice hoarse with rage. “Are you happy now?! Can’t you bear to see me happy? Can’t you stand to see me with someone close?! You called the cops on my girlfriend for an outsider?! Are you out of your mind?!”
He jabbed a finger in my face, accusing me like I was the real criminal who had committed some unforgivable sin.
The room was so quiet, it was suffocating.
His so–called friends, the trust fund kids and nepo–babies who usually acted so close to him, didn’t dare say a word.
The ones from the more prominent families knew perfectly well that I was the true head of the White family. The older sister who could make Dennis shake in his shoes, no matter how frail she looked.
I listened to his rant in silence, feeling nothing but exhaustion.
All those years of effort suddenly seemed meaningless.
When he finally ran out of steam and was left gasping for breath, I raised my hand.
Slap!
A crisp sound echoed through the living room.
