Technically, Nathan and I weren’t doing anything…explicit when Lara walked in.

But he has my shirt in his hand and a noticeable bulge in his pants. His hair is tousled, thanks to my hands running through it, and our lips are swollen.
Lara is no fool.
She recovers from her shock and folds her arms, leaning against the door. “I wondered why you were taking so long to get a simple Band- Aid,” she says. Her voice is steady, but her eyes twinkle with amusement.
I swallow. “1-”
“Got distracted?” She smirks. “Evidently.”
She unfolds one arm and wiggles her fingers in Nathan’s direction. “Hi, Nate.”
He clears his throat. “Hey, Lara.”
She chuckles softly and then reaches for a box on the shelf by the door. She rummages inside for a second before pulling out a Band–Aid and some alcohol wipes.
She waves them in the air. “Got it. I’ll just leave you two to it.”
I bite back a groan, wishing the ground would open and swallow me right this moment.
“La-”
She shakes her head. “No, don’t mind me. Bye!”
She closes the door behind her, and I drop my head in my hands. “Oh God,” I groan. “First Peter, now Lara.”
Nathan sighs. “I need to be more conscious of locking doors.”
I raise my head to look at him. “That’s your takeaway?”
He shrugs. “What’s yours?”
I roll my eyes and grab my shirt from his hand. “Let’s get out of here before we get into trouble.”
“Hey, I wanted to leave. You’re the one who didn’t want to be left ‘high and dry,‘ remember?”
My cheeks burn as I slip my arms into my shirt.
“Shut up.”
I mentally brace myself as we exit the supply closet.

Chapter 103
“I have to check on Missy,” Nathan says, gesturing towards the examination room.
At my confused look, he clarifies. “My mom’s dog.”
“Oh right, yeah.” I nod. “Leave me to face Lara on my own. Perfect.”
He chuckles, leaning forward to place a kiss on my forehead.
My heart skips a beat as he pulls back. “I’ll see you later.”
I resist the urge to pull him back and demand a proper kiss. “Yeah, see you,” I say instead.

Outside, I find Lara sitting on a picnic chair. Her foot is up on the edge as she cleans the scratch on her knee with an alcohol wipe.
I clear my throat awkwardly. “Hi.”
She looks up and grins. “Hi there.”
“Listen, I-”
Her gaze shifts slightly, and a breathy laugh leaves her. She stands and reaches around my head. She grips my scrunchie and pulls it free of my ponytail, sending my hair tumbling down my shoulders.
She pulls back, tapping the base of her neck. “Might want to wear your hair down for the next couple of days.”
My hand flies to my neck, and I feel the slightly puckered skin, still a little warm–a hickey.
Seriously, ground, now is the perfect time to open up.
“Anyway,” Lara says, sitting back down and returning her attention to her knee. “Tell me June didn’t walk in on that.”
I blink. “What do you mean?”
She gently applies the Band–Aid to her knee and looks up. “She said she was going to find you earlier. Like five minutes after you went
in.”
She frowns. “You haven’t seen her?”
I shake my head. “No. the only person that came to the supply closet was you.”
My embarrassment has taken a backseat as I spin slowly, looking around for June.
I’m tuned to pick my sister out of any crowd, but after two sweeping searches with my eyes, I don’t see her.
“I’ll go check if she’s still in the medical bay,” I say, backing away from Lara.
“No distractions!” she calls out after me.
I ignore her. There’s no way I can get distracted when it comes to June.

Chapter 103
“Hey.” Madison looks surprised to see me again so soon after I just left. “Did my sister come in here?” I ask.
“What does she look like?”
“She’s nine, about yay high.” I hold my hand up to my chest. “Same eyes and hair as me.”
Madison shakes her head. “Nope. Haven’t seen her.”
“April?”
I turn to see Nathan at the reception doorway, cuddling a tiny, snow–white dog.
“Hey,” I pant. “Did you happen to see June here?”
He shakes his head.
The first tendrils of dread twist around my spine.
“Okay, gotta go.”
“Wai-”
I’m out the door before he can complete his sentence.
Outside, I do another sweep of the park. Nothing.
I head into the main building and give the receptionist June’s description.
“Haven’t seen her, sorry.”
I do the same thing at the spa. “Yay high. Same hair and eyes.”
“No one that looks like her, sorry.”
The tendrils of dread tighten; my heart starts to race as everyone I ask gives me the same negative answer.
“April!” Nathan stops me outside the petting zoo, where, yet again, no one has seen anyone matching June’s description.
He’s no longer carrying Missy. He grips my shoulders, concern tightening his features as he asks, “What’s going on?”
“June,” I pant, feeling my throat constrict with fear. “I can’t find her. She was playing in the park, and then Lara said she came to find me, but she’s not in the medical bay and she’s not anywhere else I’ve looked and I-”
“April!”
My eyes widen at the sound of the shrill scream that echoes around the park.
My head swivels, trying to find the source.

“April!”
“June?!” I scream back.
F..
By now, having heard the screams, attendees are looking around, confused.
“April, goddammit!”
“It’s coming from there,” Nathan says, pointing toward the stables.
1 take off without a second thought.

“June!”
In the back of my mind, I know that the voice screaming my name isn’t my sister’s, but that doesn’t stop me from running faster than I’ve ever run in my life.
The door to the stables is wide open, and I run through it. Most of the horses are out on the horse track since horse riding is one of the events we offer.
I skid to a stop at the end of the long corridor. Valerie stands in front of a horse stall, her eyes wide with horror as she turns to me.
“Wha the fuck, Val?” I pant.
She opens her mouth, but no words come out.
“Valerie!” I snap, agitated beyond reason. If this is some stupid prank, I will cut a bitch.
Then, she slowly lifts her hand and points.
I turn in the direction of her finger. The tendrils of dread twist so tightly around my spine that it feels like it snaps, and I collapse to the
floor.
I stare at the sight before me, seeing but not quite comprehending.
June is lying in the empty stall, unconscious, a pool of blood spreading around her head.
