Chapter 122
“I had no idea,” is the first thing Nathan says when I open the door for him later in the night.
I roll my eyes, stepping back into my room. “Whatever.”
He sighs. “Believe me, April. If I knew, I would have found a way to rig the selection. I’d pick you all three times if I could.”
I huff, plopping onto my bed. “Whatever.”
Bracing his hands on my bare thighs, Nathan parts my legs and falls to his knees between them. Does he know that action wreaks havoc in my system? Is that why he keeps doing it?
“April,” he says softly, his lips twitching, “are you mad at me for something I had no control over?”
I glare at a corner of the ceiling in the room, trying to ignore the fact that my insides are melting into a puddle at the contact.
Nathan slides his hands across, folding his arms on my thighs. Resting his chin on them, he blinks up at me. “Are we having our second fight?”
I exhale, still staring at the corner. “This isn’t a fight.”
His fingers dance on my thighs, tickling, scalding. “Is this you being jealous?”
I scoff.
He chuckles, and I finally look at him. “You’re laughing? How is it funny?”
Nathan’s grin doesn’t falter. “You’re freaking adorable.”
“If you’re not going to take me seriously, then-”
Nathan reaches up and kisses me.
My words die in my throat with an embarrassing squeak. He’s still beaming when he pulls back, his hands still gripping my thighs.
“I’m sorry I have to go on a date with another girl,” he says.
He’s so close that my breath fans his lips when I exhale. “It’s not just any other girl. It’s Valerie.”
She’s had her eye on him since day one. She has every credential the Ashfords are looking for. And now her chances of marrying Nathan have multiplied. I think of every scheme she has concocted previously–the knee brace credit theft, the act at the stables, my ruined dress –and just know she’s going to pull out her A–game for this date.
She was already bragging to whoever had ears that they might as well scrap the rest of Nathan’s dates since he picked his perfect match on the first try.
“Valerie is just any other girl to me, April,” Nathan says, leaning forward till there’s only a hair’s breadth distance between our lips. “Any girl that isn’t you is any other girl.”

Chapter 122
“But–”
He kisses me again, harder this time. My arms unfold, and my hands grip his shoulder as my pulse skitters all over the place.

He nibbles on my lower lip, and my mouth opens for him, accepting his tongue. The rhythm is familiar now, yet still exciting and nerve wracking.
A tremor runs through me when his hands, warm and firm, move up my thighs, pushing my cotton shorts up to my waist.
My arms wrap around his neck, pulling him closer. My heart is pounding so loudly, I can barely hear our harsh breathing in the quiet room. Every nerve ending, every cell in my body is on fire, emanating from the heat in my lower belly.
Delicious lightning shoots up my body, and I gasp when Nathan grips my hips, and his thumbs press against the aching spot between my legs.
He stiffens and starts to pull back. I shift closer to him, searching for that delicious pressure again. “Don’t you dare stop,” I pant against his lips.
I feel his smile against my lips, and then he pushes himself forward, pressing me back into the bed.
His lips leave mine, pressing against my jaw, my neck, my collarbone. I bite my lip to stifle my moan when his fingers apply pressure between my thighs again.
He lifts his head, and our eyes lock. His have darkened like a forest in the night, and his throat bobs as he swallows. “Can I… I mean, do you want to…”
