Chapter 15

Amelia’s POV

I followed behind him quietly, my eyes wandering over everything I could catch along the way. Even though I hadn’t seen much of the place yet, it was enough to know that the inside matched how the outside perfectly, grand and quite expense

The mansion looked like something ripped straight out of a glossy real estate magazine, the kind of place you’d stop to stare at even if you were late for work. Tall black gates opened up to a winding driveway paved in smooth stone, the type that shines when the sun hits just right. On both sides, hedges looked perfectly trimmed, while the colors of the roses were wo vibrant they almost looked fake

The house itself was the kind you only ever saw in movies, white stone walls, huge windows, and a roof so high one would think they actually touch the clouds

It was beautiful, yes, but it didn’t look like a home. It looked like it had been designed to impress, and not to be lived in. For a second, I wondered if Edmund ever felt at home here

The hallway stretched on like it had no end. Expensive art hung on both sides, the kind of pieces you didn’t need to understand to know they were worth more than your salary

And then the space opened up, and I almost gasped

The living room was a masterpiece. Light flooded in through floortoceiling windows, bouncing off the marble until the whole room glowed. A chandelier hung from the ceiling, dripping with crystals that caught the sun and scattered tiny rainbows across the walls. Plush couches sat in a perfect arrangement around a glass table where a vase of fresh lilies stood

It wasstunning. Perfect, even. Too perfect. The kind of perfection that made you hesitate to sit, afraid you’d wrinkle a cushion or leave fingerprints behind. There were no family pictures, no warmthnothing Just elegance

Please, sit,he said, gesturing to one of the couches

I lowered myself onto the soft cushions, still unable to stop my eyes from roaming the space. You have such a beautiful home,I said honestly

He smiled, lowering himself into the chair opposite me. You like it?His eyes searched mine. I picked out everything myself.”

I gave him a small smile. It’s really nice. You’ve always had good taste.”

You think so?”

I chuckled softly, nodding. Of course. Although I must say, I always thought you didn’t like overly big houses. You said they felt lonely.”

For a moment, he just stared at me, something flickering in his eyes. Then he smiled, wide but almost sad. You’re right, actually. But my wife picked out the house herself.”

I nodded knowingly. I can definitely see her picking it.”

Yeah. You’re not wrong.he chuckled. Leaning back slightly, he added, So, what do I offer you?”

I was about to respond when the sharp sound of heels clicking against marble echoed from the staircase. I turned my head. just as Victoria appeared her attention fixed on her phone screen

Honey, I can’t seem to find my wristwatch, she said, have you seen it anywhere?”

Chapter 15

No, babe. Have you checked the drawer?he responded without looking away from me

Her gaze lifted from the phone, and then froze. The moment her eyes landed on me, the pout vanished and was replaced by

a scowl

Oh, hell no. She is your personal doctor?”

Was this bitch talking about me

I turned slowly back to Edmund and gave him a look that said, you’d better handle your wife before I do

He sighed, clearly already exhausted, and got to his feet. Can I see you for a moment, Victoria?”

Hell no you can’t,she shot back, her voice raised. There’s no way that she—”

She didn’t even finish her sentence before Edmund grabbed her by the arm and practically dragged her out of the room

I shut my eyes and took a deep breath. Dear Lord, give me patience. That entitled brat pissed me the hell off. I muttered to myself quietly, over and over again, reminding myself to treat her the way I would treat those crazy family members of patients, the ones who yelled, accused, and blamed but didn’t know the first thing about what was really going on

But why the hell did she hate me so much

It was obvious from the very first time she laid eyes on me at the hospital that she disliked me. And the thing was, she didn’t even know me. At least, I was a hundred percent sure she had no idea Edmund and I used to be married

Or did she

The thought crept in before I could stop it. Maybe she did know. Maybe that was why she’d been hostile from the start. But then againmaybe not

Either way, it wasn’t my problem. That was their business, not mine. I didn’t want to be here in the first place. If anything, I wanted to be as far away from Edmund Montgomery as possible. My only job was to check on him, make sure he was healing properly, and then leave. That was it. Nothing more.

But when the door opened again, all that resolve went out the window

Victoria stormed back in, Edmund right behind her, his jaw clenched in irritation. She threw me a glare so sharp I could practically feel it slice through me, then without warning, she turned and grabbed him by the collar and kissed him

My heart plummeted straight to the floor

The pain that ripped through me was immediate, raw. Jealousy coiled in my chest tightening around so tight I could barely breathe. I wanted to look away, to save myself from watching her kiss the man my heart once belonged to, but I couldn’t. My eyes stayed locked on them, as if the universe was punishing me for every feeling I had for him

And it was in that exact moment, as the heat burned in my chest and my throat threatened to close, that I realized the truth I’d been burying all along

I still loved him

God help me, I still loved him

1 sighed, pressing my palm against my lap to steady myself. The tightening in my chest refused to ease

This wasn’t going to work. None of it. I couldn’t be his personal doctor, not while I was still in love with him. Every moment around him would tear me apart a little more

Chapter 15

They finally pulled away, and Victoria hirmed back to me with a smirk tugging at her lips

Make yourself at home. Dr. QuackShe tilted her head sweetly, her voice dripping with morkery. Oop. I mean Dr. Amelia.”

And then, just to twist the knife deeper, she leaned over and kissed his cheek

Bye, baby, she said sweetly, before walking out of the room like she owned the place

Edmund ran a hand through his hair and let out a tired sigh. I’m so sorry about that. Victoria can be a little condescending sometimes.”

A little?I raised a brow, giving him a tight smile that didn’t quite reach my eyes. I can see that.”

He chuckled softly, almost like he was trying to ease the tension. Okayso is there anything I can get you?”

I closed my eyes for a brief moment and whispered under my breath, Just do your job and get the hell out of here. Ameira.”

Amelia?”

I opened my eyes quickly and forced myself to my feet, clutching my bag tightly. That’s fine, sir. Let’s just go ahead with the checkup so I can leave.”

The corner of his mouth lifted in amusement. You don’t have to be so formal with me, Amelia. You know that, right? His voice softened. Besides, it’s just you and I here.”

That sent alarm bells ringing in my head. Just him and me. In this massive house

I don’t understand what you mean, sir,I said quickly, flicking my eyes to my watch. I really need to finish up soon, it’s almost time to pick my-”

I stopped myself, biting my lip so hard I nearly drew blood. Damn it. I almost told him I had a daughter

Your?he pressed, his eyes narrowing with curiosity

That doesn’t matter,I cut in too fast, waving it off. Can we just hurry, please?”

He tilted his head, studying me like I was a puzzle he wanted to solve. Then he stepped forward, closing the space between

  1. us

I immediately stepped back, my heart thudding against my ribs

Are you being serious right now?he asked, his tone low, like he wasn’t used to being pushed away

I squared my shoulders, forcing calmness into my voice. The living room will do just fine, Mr. Montgomery.”

He groaned in frustration, dragging a hand down his face. Stop with the Montgomery shit, Amelia. You know how to say my name.” He took steady steps towards me. and this time, I didn’t move back. His lips curved into a lazy smirk. And if my memory serves me right, you were damn good at moaning it too.”

Heat shot through me against my will, my body betraying me in ways my mind refused to allow. I clenched my fists, forcing a frown onto my face. Goodbye, sir.”

I made to walk past him, desperate for air, desperate for distance. But before I could, his hand wrapped around mine, warm

strong
