I raised a brow, not sure what game he was playing.

“John, what are you doing at my door?”

He jogged over and grabbed my hand, his icy fingers rubbing my palm.

“Aren’t you cold? It’s freezing today, and you didn’t even dress warmer! Do you know how much that worries me?”

My stomach turned. I nearly threw up all that meal because of him.

I yanked my hand back. “What are you doing?”

His eyes went red. “I’m just worried about you.

“You love looking good, so you always wear less in winter. I don’t want you to get sick.

“Wennie, what will you do without me? At least I can bring you a jacket and warm your hands. Without me, how will you take care of yourself?

“Let’s get back together, okay? I really love you.”

I looked into his eyes. There was real emotion there.

And it was true-he used to treat me with care.

He’d bring me an umbrella when it rained and a coat when it snowed.

I used to believe what we had was irreplaceable. That we were the perfect love story.

But that same man called me clingy, disappeared just to avoid me, and even cheated.

“Why should I?”

I stared coldly at him. “I dress lightly because I go straight from the car to the office. I don’t even feel the wind.

“John, why is it that when you want to be good to me, you are, and when you want to disappear, you do? And now you want me to remarry you just because you said so?

“I loved you because you treated me well. You made me think you were gentle and worth loving. But then I realized

-you’re not.

“You’re just a selfish liar who does whatever it takes to get what he wants.

“You vanished for three months for your own reasons, kept the people who cared about you in the dark, and watched them suffer without even a hint of guilt. And you think that’s love?

“That’s just pathetic.”

John stared at me, shaking.

He wanted to deny it, but couldn’t say a word.

“Anything else? If not, move. I want to go

inside.”

He stood there, silent. He didn’t even budge.

I sighed, annoyed, and reached out to push him aside.

But he suddenly pulled me into his arms.

“Wennie, I really messed up! There’s nothing going on between me and Nancy! I was drunk that night-it was just a mistake, the kind all men make!

ด

“I’ll stay away from her, please, just give me another chance!”

He held me tight, no matter how hard I struggled.

Until someone yanked me away and into another embrace. I looked up and saw Harvey’s sharp jawline.

His voice came from above me.

“John, I told you that if you show up harassing Wennie again, the Sullivan family will no longer help you!”

John instantly let go of my hand.

“Uncle Harvey, this is between my wife and me.”

I actually laughed.

“Between the two of us?

“John, who told you to fake your disappearance?

“Don’t tell me that was your own idea. You’re not that smart.

“All you ever do is get played by Nancy.

“She takes you out, and you say she’s a close friend. You drink together, close friend. You lie to me together-still just a close friend. Even when you sleep together, is she your close friend? Tell me, do all close friends do that?”

Disgust flickered across his face.

He messed up but wouldn’t even apologize. Just kept making excuses.

That only made me hate him more.

Harvey shoved the frozen-in-place John aside and nudged me toward the door. “Go rest. I’ll handle him.”

I nodded, went inside, slammed the door, and went straight to my room.
