Chapter 8

I had no idea what Harvey and John talked about that night. But after that, I didn’t see John for a long time.

Lately, I threw myself completely into work. I was either calling or meeting with Harvey almost every day.

The frequent meetings gradually erased the awkwardness between us. We could even chat casually like normal friends sometimes.

“Harvey, what did you say to John that night? He hasn’t shown up since.”

Harvey glanced at me, pulled out his phone, and swiped through some photos.

All of them were John and Nancy.

“Once he knew you weren’t going to forgive him, he dove straight into his close friend’s arms.”

I casually flipped through the pics, then suddenly froze. There was a photo of me from college.

“What’s this? Why do you have a photo of me?

“The angle… kinda looks like it was taken secretly.”

Harvey stiffened and snatched the phone back. “You saw it wrong.”

I blinked and gave him a knowing “oh.”

“If I saw it wrong, then forget it. I was just about to ask if you wanted to date me-but I guess I was overthinking.”

“You didn’t see it wrong.”

Harvey pulled the photo back up and handed me the phone.

“You didn’t see it wrong. I did take it secretly.

“I was at your college giving a talk. I saw you and snapped a photo…”

He looked at me, and for the first time, the feelings in his eyes weren’t hidden.

Everything was clear without needing to be said.

“But I married John. Isn’t that a problem?”

Harvey’s face turned serious. He scooted a bit closer.

“It’s not a problem. John was just my brother’s adopted son. When he became an adult, he screwed up badly and got kicked out of the family. I only helped him finish college out of respect for the dead.”

I nodded, reached out, and took his hand. “Three-month trial. Whether you pass depends on your performance.”

Harvey nodded quickly.

“We’re done with work for the day-how about Cajun food?”

Maybe it was because I hadn’t had it for four years, but now I was hooked.

Every two or three days, I had to have it. If not, I’d feel off.

Harvey had eaten it with me countless times, but he never got sick of it. Every time, he’d find a new place for us to

try.

Today was no different.

“I found another good one. Let’s go.”

But just as we stepped out of the office, a figure suddenly dropped to her knees in front of me.

“Wennie, please! Go find John! He’s been missing for three days. I can’t find him anywhere!”

Nancy’s eyes were bloodshot. She kept kneeling, begging me to help find John.

I frowned and quickly stepped aside.

“Nancy, get up. Just tell me what happened to John?”

She looked worn down, completely lost.

“He insisted on going skiing. I couldn’t talk him out of it, so I went with him.

“But he disappeared again—in the same place he faked it last time. I’ve searched for three days and still can’t find him! I’ve run out of money. Please, help me find him!”

I pressed my lips together. “Nancy, did it ever occur to you that maybe he’s faking it again?”

She shook her head hard, voice full of certainty. “No. John would never lie to me!”

I sighed and let go of Harvey’s hand. “I’ve been to that place a few times. I’ll go with Nancy to check.”

Harvey’s gaze darkened. He stared at me. “You still can’t let him go?”

“Of course not.”

Then I leaned close to his ear and whispered, “I’m sure he’s faking it again. If you’ve got time, come with me.”

Harvey didn’t hesitate. He bought three plane tickets on the spot.

“I’ll go with you.”
