The paper slipped from Samson’s hand and fell to the floor without him noticing.
His eyes welled with tears as he slammed his fist on the table.
“This record must be fake! How much did Stacy pay you?”
He’d rather this be all part of Stacy’s scheme.
But the director explained hurriedly.
“No, no! Ms. Moore is behind in her medical bills. Where would she even get the money to bribe us?
“I heard that when she was first diagnosed, she fell in love and spent all her savings on that boy toy of hers. Now they’ve broken up, and she has no money for treatment. What a foolish young lady-”
“Shut up!”
Samson couldn’t bear to listen any longer.
He wasn’t stupid. Previously, he had been blinded by hatred. Now that he thought over it seriously, it seemed to clear things up.
“Stace…”
He sprang up, desperate to see Stacy. But his knees gave out, and he collapsed to his knees after only a few steps.
He clutched the medical record and suddenly slapped himself across the face.
“Stace, I’m sorry… I failed you.”
I returned to the ward after a short walk and found Samson sitting at my bedside. It looked like he’d been waiting for
- me.
I instantly turned to leave, but Samson sprang forward and grabbed my wrist.
I stepped back a little and looked at him warily.
“What do you want now? Do you want me to compensate your fiancée’s heels?”
Samson staggered a few steps.
At that moment, no physical pain could match the ache in my heart.
His voice was hoarse and tears streamed down his face. “No! Stace, I already know the truth!
“You knew you were in the advanced stages of cancer. You broke up with me so you wouldn’t burden me, didn’t

you?”
“Stace… Why didn’t you tell me? We could have faced this together.”
I calmly pulled my hand out of his grasp.
“At that time you were just a poor student and treated me like practice before marriage.
“Have you ever considered a future with me?”

Sorrow clouded his eyes as he froze in place. “I shouldn’t have lied. At first, I hid my identity and got together with you for fun.
“But over time, I truly fell in love with you, Stace!
“These past few days, while planning the wedding with Sarah, scenes of us keep flashing through my mind. You said we’d be together forever. Have you forgotten all that?”
Samson grabbed my hand again and pressed his face to it.
In the past, he’d act pitifully like this to beg forgiveness when he’d upset me.
My palm was soon wet with his tears.
How could I ever forget the happiness we shared when we dated?
But now, barely clinging to life, I couldn’t possibly return that love.
I sighed, swallowed the dull ache in my chest, and pushed him away resolutely.
“We’re not meant for each other.
“I might die within days. You’re the Lynton family’s precious heir. You should marry someone of equal standing and live a good life.”
