Nathan’s eyes were so gentle and sincere that Eliana just froze, staring back at him, not knowing what to do or how to respond.
They locked eyes in silence for a long moment. Just as Eliana was about to look away, Nathan suddenly spoke up.
‘Eliana, I’m truly sorry for everything that happened back then,” Nathan said quietly.
“I know leaving you back then was a huge blow, but something happened with my family, and I had no choice but to go,” Nathan continued softly.
He added, “I thought about saying goodbye. I even found you, but I couldn’t step out and face you.
“We had to run for our lives, and honestly, I had no idea if I’d ever make it back. If something happened to me out there, it may be better if you just thought I was cold and unfeeling.
“At least you’d grieve for a bit, but eventually, you’d get on with your life.
“Those first few years abroad were hell. I was so lost I couldn’t even imagine facing you. That’s why I didn’t reach out, even though missing you was driving me insane.
“Every single day and night, you were all I thought about. Thinking of you was the only thing that kept me sane.
“The only reason I survived those hard times and made it back was that I love you.”
As Nathan spoke, his eyes were filled with unwavering sincerity.
He continued, “Later, when I finally started to get my life back together, I wanted to come back for you. But then I found out you were already married. So I threw myself into work, using it to numb the pain and force myself not to think about you.
“People around me kept telling me to move on, to find someone new, but I just couldn’t. Every time I met someone, all I saw was you. I figured it was better to stay single than to drag someone else into my mess.”
“So, Eliana, do you have any idea how over the moon I was when I heard you and Logan were on the rocks and heading for a divorce?” Nathan said, his voice thick with emotion.
He added, “I couldn’t wait even a second. I just wanted to drop everything and rush straight to you.
“But I knew I couldn’t make it too obvious. I had to hold back, wait until you really let go of Logan. Thankfully, I waited, and that moment finally came.”
As Nathan spoke, he saw Eliana’s eyes turning red. Unable to help himself, he leaned in and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead. Looking at her with complete sincerity, he said, “Eliana, let’s just let all that go, okay? Can we leave the past behind
us?”
He added, “From now on, will you let me try to win your heart all over again?”
Listening to Nathan, Eliana’s heart was already a mess. She could barely keep it together.
But when he actually said those words, Eliana just turned her head, trying to play it cool. “We’ll talk about it later,” she said. her voice barely steady.
But the moment Eliana turned away, she couldn’t hold back her tears anymore. They started falling before she even realized
- it.

Eliana thought, ‘I wanted to say yes, honestly, but come on. Who just pops the question like that?

‘If he wants to go for it, then do it. Why make it so formal? If I agreed right away, it’d look like I was way too eager.
But as she replayed his words in her mind, Eliana’s nose tingled, and her eyes started to well up with tears.
She thought, ‘Honestly, the only time I ever really knew what it meant to love someone was when I was with Nathan.
‘Being with Logan was more like a compromise. I just didn’t want my parents to worry. I wanted to be the good kid who never made them anxious, so I made that choice.
‘If Logan hadn’t been so unreasonable, maybe I would’ve just kept going with things as they were.
‘Love didn’t really matter anyway. How many families out there are truly built on love?
‘But Logan had crossed the line. I couldn’t take it anymore.
‘Now, listening to Nathan, I realized for the first time that maybe Logan messing things up was actually a good thing. If he hadn’t been so awful, I might never have known Nathan had always carried a torch for me.
‘I never knew all that Nathan had gone through.
‘I never imagined there was still a chance for us to find our way back to each other.‘
As Eliana mulled it all over, she couldn’t help replaying Nathan’s words in her head.
Thinking about how he’d been forced into all that back then, Eliana looked at him, her gaze earnest. She said, “Nathan, was it really that tough for you while you were overseas?”
Nathan was already up, preparing her medicine, but when she suddenly asked that, he turned around and gave her a serious look.
When he saw her eyes red and full of concern, Nathan felt his heart skip a beat.
But Nathen quickly steadied himself, looked at her earnestly, and said, “What, does your heart ache for me now?”
Eliana knew Nathan was always joking around, never saying anything straight, but this time she didn’t mind at all. Instead, she looked at him thoughtfully.
She thought, ‘I could tell he was just trying to dodge the question on purpose.
‘And honestly, the more he acted like that, the more it proved just how much he’d really suffered back then.
Eliana’s eyes were red and brimming with tears. She looked at Nathan, her voice low and earnest. “Can you tell me why?
“What exactly happened back then?”
Everyone knew Nathan was a rich kid. He came from money, which was common knowledge in their class.
So Eliana really couldn’t figure out what could’ve happened to make someone like him drop everything and run off to another country, not even sure he’d make it out alive.
But as she asked, Eliana was already bracing herself for the possibility that he might not answer.
She thought, ‘If he didn’t want to talk about it, I wasn’t going to push him.

Talking about that part of his past was always too hard for Nathan. That’s why, no matter how many times Irene pressed him for answers, he never breathed a word.
But now, looking into Eliana’s worried eyes, Nathan found himself wanting to let her in finally. For the first time, he actually tried to tell her everything, Lay it all bare, just for her.
Nathan handed her the medicine and gave her a gentle look. He said, “Take this first, okay?”
Eliana didn’t say anything. She just took the medicine and swallowed it without hesitation.
Once she finished, Nathan looked at her and started, “That year, my old man got swindled and ended up owing a ton of
money.
“He couldn’t pay it back, and instead of facing the consequences himself, he tried to force my mom to do something desperate just to pay off his debts.
“One day, some guys barged into our house and tried to drag my mom away. I couldn’t just stand there and watch, so I grabbed a vase and cracked it over one of their heads.
“Turns out, that guy was seriously dangerous. Way out of our league. He was out for my life, and my mom had no choice but to take me and get us out of there.
“It all happened in a flash. There was no time even to let you know. But even with everything going down, not knowing what was waiting for us, I still ended up near your school, just waiting for you to get out.
“But I just couldn’t bring myself to walk up to you
