Chapter 137
As Nathan spoke, he noticed something off in Eliana’s eyes. He quickly forced a smile and said, “Hey, what’s this? Why are you crying?”
“It’s all in the past now. I never dared to talk about it because I was embarrassed. Embarrassed for him,” Eliana said.
“But that’s all behind me now,” he added.
As Nathan spoke, he saw tears welling up in Eliana’s eyes. He quickly reached out and wiped them away. He said, “Alright, don’t cry. Shouldn’t you be proud of me? I turned things around against all odds and built myself up to where I am now.”
“Those things are all in the past, and honestly, it’s for the best. If it weren’t for all that, I never would’ve realized just how much I’m capable of,” he added.
“If you married me again now, you’d have nothing to worry about. I’m more than capable, and I’d never let you go through any hardship,” Nathan said, trying to lighten the mood.
Nathan was speaking seriously, still trying to cheer her up, but only Eliana understood what those offhand remarks really
meant.
Eliana thought, ‘If things hadn’t gotten so desperate, his mother never would have taken him and fled overseas.
‘Power like that. The kind that could ruin someone’s life. If they really wanted to go after them, they could reach them even
overseas.
‘So even after they went overseas, life couldn’t have been easy for him at the start.
‘But I knew Nathan’s personality way too well. He was the type who’d do anything to save his pride.
‘It was that stubborn pride that got us fighting back then, and I ended up breaking up with him. If it hadn’t been for that, none of that drama would’ve happened.’
Thinking about it, Eliana found herself looking at Nathan, her gaze serious. She said, “Nathan, why did you say all that stuff back then?”
As Eliana spoke, memories from the past came flooding back.
Back in high school, during a break, a bunch of guys had just come off the basketball court, with Nathan surrounded by his buddies.
One of them laughed and said, “Nathan, how did a rebel like you end up with a good girl like Eliana? Don’t you ever get bored?”
“Man, I heard the most she’ll do is hold your hand. You guys haven’t even kissed yet? That’s way too wholesome for you. Nathan,” another guy teased.
As his friends joked around, Nathan just laughed and said, “What else can I do? If you want to date a good girl, you gotta give up on some of the fun stuff”
“She’s a model student, you know. Just getting her to agree to be with me was special enough. I wouldn’t dare ask for anything more,” he said.
As soon as Nathan said that, everyone around him cracked up.
Someone else piped up, “But for real, Nathan, did you get with Eliana just to see what it’s like dating a straight–A girl!”

Nathan’s eyes flashed with a cold smirk and said, “What else? She’s so well–behaved, I just wanted to see if a model student like her would ever break the rules when no one’s looking. Guess she does after all.
As soon as Nathan said that, Eliana’s expression shifted dramatically, her face changing several times.
She’d been watching from the shadows for quite some time, but in the end, she couldn’t hold back. She stepped out and blocked Nathan’s way.
In that moment, she caught the unmistakable panic in Nathan’s eyes.
But when she confronted him, Nathan still put on that cocky attitude and said, “You heard everything, didn’t you? Why are you even asking?”
“So you were only with me because you wanted to see if a good girl would break the rules?” Eliana asked again, her voice steady and serious.
Eliana asked again, her voice steady and serious.
Meeting her eyes, Nathan felt panic rising inside, but with everyone watching, he was too proud to back down. He gritted his teeth and said, “Yeah, you heard it, didn’t you?
“Why keep asking?”
As he said this, Nathan leaned in closer, forcing a playful grin. “What, you hoping I’ll give you a different answer?”
Eliana couldn’t hold back anymore. She slapped him hard across the face.
“Nathan, you j*rk!” she shouted.
As soon as she said that, Nathan just pressed his tongue against his cheek, grinning. “Why are you so mad?”
“Come on, don’t be mad, okay?” he said, trying to sound playful.
“I just… At first…” he started.
But before Nathan could finish, Eliana slapped him hard across the face.
Feeling so hurt and wronged, Eliana’s eyes brimmed with tears. She stared at Nathan and said, “Nathan, we’re breaking up!
“Did you really think I ever liked you? I was just so stressed from school. I used you to let off steam.
“You’re so full of yourself. You’re honestly pathetic.”
With that, Eliana shoved Nathan’s hand away, pushed past him, and stormed off without looking back.
Nathan saw the look on Eliana’s face, and his eyes went red, stinging with emotion.
But with all the guys around still jeering and making a scene, Nathan held himself back and didn’t chase after her.
Watching Eliana turn and storm off, Nathan’s eyes were rimmed with red, but he just clenched his fists, biting back his feelings.
He forced a grin and started chatting and laughing with his friends, pretending nothing had happened.
Once Eliana had walked a bit further, she looked back and saw Nathan still laughing and messing around with his friends, acting like he didn’t care at all.

But what she didn’t know was that, as soon as she turned the corner, Nathan started throwing punches at those guys.
It was just because someone teased, “Why are you putting on an act? So lame. But hey, Nathan, now that you two broke up, does that mean she’s fair game now?”
“Honestly, I’m kinda curious what it’d be like to go after a straight–A girl like Eliana,” another one piped up.
But before he could even finish, Nathan didn’t hesitate. He just punched him right in the face.
The rest of the guys instantly shut up. None of them dared to say a word.
All day, Nathan kept trying to catch up to Eliana and apologize, but every time she saw him, she’d go out of her way to avoid him. wouldn’t even look at him.
After a few failed attempts, Nathan’s stubborn streak kicked in.
Back then, everyone figured there was plenty of time ahead. Nathan thought he could wait it out and fix things whenever he was ready.
But life could change in an instant. No one ever knew which would come first, tomorrow or a twist of fate.
That very night, something terrible happened at home. Nathan ended up hitting someone over the head with whatever was nearby, and his mom didn’t waste a second. She grabbed him, and they left right away.
Back then, Nathan never imagined that one reckless argument, all because of teenage pride, would end up tearing him and Eliana apart for good.
It wasn’t until he was forced to leave that Nathan finally started to regret it, but by then, it was already too late.
Now that Eliana brought it up, all those memories he’d tried to shove down came crashing back, hitting him like a tidal
wave.
Nathan sucked in a shaky breath, his eyes so red he looked like he might break down any second. “I was so clueless back then… Just a dumb kid.”
He met Eliana’s gaze, his tone serious. “Back then, saving face was everything to me. Nothing else mattered. But now, looking back, it all just seems so stupid.”
“Eliana, I really regret it,” he said, voice thick with emotion.
