Martin said, “If Mr. Drake’s willing to help, I actually wanted to reach out to him first, but for some reason, I just can’t get through; his phone’s unreachable.”
He added, “Ms. Perry, if you manage to find Mr. Drake, could you let him know for me? If he’s up for helping out, I’d definitely welcome it.”
During their meeting, Martin had already picked up on the subtle tension between Irene and Ethan.
He was certain Irene definitely wouldn’t help him reach out to Ethan at a time like this.
Especially since, right from the start, he’d shown he didn’t trust Irene and wanted Ethan to be his divorce lawyer. That had⚫ obviously made Irene feel like he didn’t have faith in her.
At a time like this, she’d only be even more eager to prove herself.
Martin really knew how to read people.
As expected, with a slight push, Irene let her guard down and replied, “Mr. Campbell, that’s not what I meant. I’m your divorce lawyer now, so if you run into trouble, it’s my job to help you out, both professionally and personally.”
She added, “Just give me a moment, I’ll get there as fast as I can.”
Hearing Irene agree, Martin was in high spirits and responded happily, “Great, thanks so much, Ms. Perry. Once this is all sorted, I’ll make sure to thank you properly.”
After a brief exchange of pleasantries, Irene hung up the phone.
Thinking about Ethan’s reminder earlier, Irene hesitated for a second, but ended up calling him anyway, just wanting to let him know what was happening.
But every time she tried, she just kept getting a busy signal.
Irene kept calling, but Ethan’s phone was still just a busy signal; there was no way to get through.
That made Irene feel relieved.
So Martin wasn’t lying; he really couldn’t reach Ethan, so he had no choice but to come to her.
But if Ethan couldn’t be bothered with a big–money divorce case, there’s no way he’d care about a little favor like this.
So Irene didn’t try to reach out to him again. She just changed clothes and headed out by herself.
She didn’t want to use Ethan’s driver, so she just grabbed a cab and went straight to the address Martin had sent her.
The place was pretty far. After getting into the cab, Irene checked the route on her phone, and when she realized the destination was almost thirty miles from her hotel, she couldn’t help but feel a bit uneasy.
But with the cab already on its way, she forced herself to ignore the nagging feeling in her gut. After a moment’s hesitation. she went ahead and texted the address to Ethan anyway.
After a cab ride of over 20 miles, it took nearly an hour before Irene hnally arrived at her destination.
It turned out to be a luxurious estate, and to her surprise, the place was still brightly lit at this hour.

As she walked further in, someone came up to her and asked, “Are you Ms. Perry? Mr. Campbell asked me to meet you at the
entrance.”
Irene nodded. “Yeah, Mr. Campbell asked me to come over. Is there something I need to take care of?”
After all, she was in unfamiliar territory, and as she walked deeper inside, Irene found herself asking again, unable to shake off her wariness.
The estate was massive, with winding paths and complicated layouts. ‘If something really goes down in there, getting out won’t be so easy, Irene thought, her nerves on edge.
Irene knew she shouldn’t let her thoughts wander in that direction, but she couldn’t help it; a subtle unease settled in her chest.
The person who came to greet her didn’t bother hiding anything and said, “Honestly, it’s nothing major. Mr. Campbell just didn’t want to mention it beforehand because, well, it’s kind of awkward for him.”
He went on, “It’s really nothing huge, just a bit of a falling out with Mrs. Campbell’s brothers.”
He continued. “When Mr. Campbell and his wife were still on good terms, he did business with those people. Now that the divorce is underway, they’ve turned on him, banding together and trying to force him into signing a highly unfair agreement.”
He explained, “Before they called him over, Mr. Campbell thought it was just a casual get–together. Aside from his wife, he actually got along with them pretty well. He never expected things would go south so fast.”
He added, “Mr. Campbell figured business was business, even if his marriage was falling apart, the deals could still go on like normal. So when they invited him, he didn’t think much of it and didn’t bother preparing for anything.
“But when he got here, he realized they’d been plotting something like this all along,” he continued.
“And they even brought a lawyer with them, pressing their point hard. Mr. Campbell was totally outnumbered and couldn’t get a word in edgewise, so he had no choice but to think of you and Mr. Drake,” he went on.
“At first, we actually wanted to call Mr. Drake. It was getting late, and we figured it might be inconvenient for you to come over, and honestly, we were a bit concerned about your safety, too,” he explained.
“But for some reason, we just couldn’t get through to Mr. Drake,” he said.
“Mr. Campbell couldn’t afford to wait any longer, so he ended up calling you,” he said.
“When he sent me out to meet you, he kept telling me to give you a heads–up. He said if you can handle those troublemakers tonight, he’ll make sure you get a special bonus; he won’t shortchange you,” he finished.
Hearing the guy lay it all out so clearly, Irene’s heart finally settled down.
If that’s all there is to it, then this should be a piece of cake.
Judging by his expression, he didn’t look like he was making things up.
Letting out a quiet sigh of relief, Irene looked at him and said, “Let’s head inside, no need to waste any more time.”
The man hurriedly replied and quickened his steps, but just as he turned away, a distinctly crafty look flashed in his eyes
They walked a good distance before finally stopping in front of one of the villas.

The whole estate had several buildings lined up, all looking almost identical. Just to be safe. Irene made a mental note; this was the sixth one in a row.
After confirming the number, she followed the man inside.
There were quite a few people inside, and Martin was arguing so fiercely with them that his face was practically steaming.
The other side’s lawyer–looking guy was jabbing his finger at the old contract, rattling off legal jargon and making his case sound airtight, he looked ready to tear Martin apart with words.
Martin was clearly getting crushed, so when he saw Irene walk in, it was like he’d just spotted his savior. He blurted out, “Ms. Perry, you’re finally here!”
