Chapter 186
But when Irene realized it was Malvina who walked in, she suddenly became aware of the thoughts she’d just had.
Her breath grew heavy, and she quickly wiped away the tears at the corners of her eyes.
Not wanting to make a fool of herself in front of someone else, she tried her best to pull herself together.
But when Malvina saw Irene like this, she couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy. She asked softly, “What’s wrong? Did you have a fight with your boyfriend?”
When Malvina said that, Irene’s first reaction was to reject that Ethan wasn’t her boyfriend.
But she held back.
After all, she’d probably never cross paths with this doctor again, so there was no point getting into it and making things complicated for no reason.
So, she nodded lightly.
Knowing she’d hit the nail on the head, Malvina started checking Irene over and gave her some heartfelt advice. You can‘ just let this go. You really need to talk to him about it. You should take care of yourself.
“If it only happens once in a while, it’s not a big deal. But if he treats you like this again, it could seriously hurt you.
“If he truly loves you, he’ll get it. But if he’s picking fights with you over stuff like this, you really need to think this through.”
Malvina knew she probably shouldn’t meddle in her patient’s personal life, but seeing Irene all banged up, and knowing Ethan had just left her alone in the hospital. She just couldn’t hold back her words.
But as soon as Malvina finished speaking, Irene lowered her head. She just didn’t know what to say.
If only things between her and Ethan were as simple as just being a couple. But that wasn’t the case.
It was not entirely Ethan’s fault that events spiraled out of control the day before. Irene was well aware she had walked directly into Martin’s trap, and the blame for this truly lay with her.
But what hurt her even more were the things Ethan had said. Every word was like a needle, stabbing straight into her heart.
But to Malvina, Irene’s silence meant something else entirely.
Thinking Irene was just another girl who was boy crazy, Malvina couldn’t hide the disappointment in her eyes. Her tone turned sharp. “Seriously, it’s like you can’t live without a man? Is it worth hurting yourself over a guy?
Just look at yourself. You’re in bruises. Still haven’t learned your lesson?
“I’m going to put some medicine on your wounds. Just tough it out
While she was talking, Malvina wasn’t exactly gentle. She was a bit rough on purpose when putting medicine on Irene’s
wounds.
She wasn’t out to punish Irene or anything; she just wanted her to learn from this and not make the same mistake again.
From Malvina’s perspective, Ethan seemed like a real jerk, so she figured maybe a little tough love would help Irene snap
out of it.

The pain hit Irene all at once, and she just couldn’t hold back, and she whimpered out loud, unable to stop herself.
Tears rolled down her cheeks without restraint. Irene pressed her lips together hard, striving to stay calm, but her voice came out soft and choked with sobs.
“Hurts, doesn’t it? Now you learn your lesson,” Malvina said, her tone still sharp.
She kept applying the medicine, and once she was done, she ran through all the things Irene needed to keep in mind.
Seeing the way the doctor acted, Irene felt both hurt and miserable. She couldn’t hold back the tears, no matter what she did.
It was true that people were more vulnerable when they were sick or injured. Right now, Irene just couldn’t stop the tears from falling.
She didn’t even know how long she’d been crying. Eventually, exhausted from all the sobbing, she curled up on the hospital bed and fell asleep.
Between the meds and sheer exhaustion, Irene slept so deeply she didn’t stir until her phone’s ringtone jolted her awake around noon.
Grabbing her phone, she noticed that this number had tried calling her seven or eight times already.
Her brows knotted with worry. Something was definitely amiss. She didn’t hesitate for a second, hitting redial at once.
The call connected almost instantly, and Martin’s voice came through the line.
“Ms. Perry, it’s Martin. I need to ask you something,” Martin said.
As soon as Irene heard Martin’s voice, her face instantly turned pale. But she gritted her teeth and stayed on the line, refusing to hang up.
She wanted to see what Martin had the guts to say to her now.
“Go ahead,” Irene said, her grip tightening on her phone as she forced herself to keep her anger in check.
Martin said with anger, “Didn’t you just take my case yesterday? Now Drake Law Firm says you’re dropping it. What’s that supposed to mean?
“You’re the one who took my case, so I’m asking you. What’s going on here? Are you guys just messing with your clients for fun?
“You already agreed to take it, and I’ve given you everything you asked for. Now you’re just bailing on me? Where am I supposed to find someone else at the last minute?
“Did you have something to do with my wife or something? Are you just trying to screw me over?”
When Martin said that, Irene was floored by how gross he was being. She’d never been this disgusted by someone before.
She honestly couldn’t believe that after everything that went down yesterday, Martin could still say something so outrageous like it was no big deal.
Anger surged through Irene, and she couldn’t hold back anymore. She said coldly, “You seriously don’t know why we’re dropping your case? Think about it.
“Martin, I just came to my senses, and I’m about to call the police.

“You tricked me into coming over yesterday, and you know what you did, and now you expect me to represent you? How dare you even ask me that?
“Yeah, we’re going to court all right, but this time, I’m the one pressing charges, and you’re the one in the hot seat.”
“You’re suing me? For what? Did I even lay a finger on you?” Martin shot back, his voice rising in panic.
Yesterday, after seeing Irene accept all those jewelry pieces, he thought she was all about the cash. And since she hadn’t called or texted him all morning, that just made him even surer.
But now, hearing her say all that on the phone, Martin started to feel uneasy.
Still, he insisted, “You came over on your own last night. A woman showing up at some remote spot in the middle of the night, taking all that jewelry from me. Come on, you were basically asking for it, weren’t you?
“So now you’re clinging to Ethan, huh? Trying to act all pure in front of him, so you wanna pin everything on me and make me look like the bad guy?
“Irene, forget it. No way in hell.
“If you dare call the police, you’re the one who’s gonna get dragged through the mud.
“The security cameras got you on tape taking all that jewelry from me, plain as day.”
As Martin’s words came through, Irene’s eyes flashed with emotion, a storm brewing in her gaze.
This feeling of being unable to defend herself with words really made her feel extremely bad.
