Chapter 76
With all these thoughts swirling in his head, Logan couldn’t be bothered with Isabella in the back seat.

He just instinctively hit the gas, wanting to get to the hospital as fast as possible so Isabella would quit her nonstop complaining in the back.
Just as they were about to reach Eliot Hospital, Isabella suddenly burst out laughing at herself, the sound bitter and mocking from the back seat.
“Logan, admit it, you’ve fallen for Eliana. You threw away everything we had. Why? Why would you do this? Do all those promises you made to me mean nothing now?
“Yes, I went abroad, but I never got married. I was single the whole time. I was just there to get treatment.
“The day you had that accident five years ago, after I saved you, you asked me to come back with you. You have no idea how much I wanted to say yes.
“I looked fine, but my illness was already eating me up inside. I couldn’t let you see me like that, so I ran away. I spent six years overseas, six whole years just trying to get better.
“I thought our love could survive anything. I thought if I came back, you’d still choose me. But now, how could you be so cold?” Isabella sobbed.
Logan’s face grew grim as he listened to Isabella’s desperate yelling from the back seat. Every time she brought up happened five years ago, his heart ached and he couldn’t help but feel guilty.

But this time, he gritted his teeth and said, “Isabella, I’m still married. I can’t just do this. Hang in there, we’re almost at the hospital.”
With that, Logan pulled into Eliot Hospital in a hurry. As soon as the car stopped, he scooped Isabella up and rushed her inside.
The doctors came running the moment they saw Logan. After hearing what happened, they quickly laid Isabella on a gurney, secured her, and rushed her straight to the ER.
Isabella had never experienced anything like this before, and now she realized that reality was nothing like what she’d pictured in her head.
She didn’t lose consciousness, but the discomfort was overwhelming, making her feel worse than she ever thought possible. And yet, even in this state, her mind was hyper–aware. She was painfully awake to everything happening around her.
Seeing herself pinned down on the gurney, her arms restrained as she was rushed into the ER, a sense of humiliation welled up inside her out of nowhere.
She couldn’t fight back. She could only watch helplessly as the medical staff started pumping her stomach.
Tears rolled down her cheeks. After all the scheming she’d done, Isabella never imagined it would end like this. Humiliation wasn’t the only thing flooding her, anxiety hit her just as hard.
Even now, Logan didn’t choose to be with her. Instead, he resorted to such drastic measures to help her, not caring at all that everyone could see her at her lowest.
All of this made one thing painfully clear, Logan didn’t love her anymore.

The surgery was over in no time, and Isabella was quickly brought back to her hospital bed.
Logan lingered by her side, replaying everything she’d said in the car. He stood there, torn, before finally turning and walking away.
He wasn’t even sure why, but at that moment, he just couldn’t look her in the eye. After getting someone to watch over her. Logan left the room.
He’d barely walked out when Isabella called him right away. Her voice was still rough, every word stabbing at him with accusation.
“Logan, what do you mean by this? Why did you just leave me here alone? Since we’ve already said everything, just tell me, what do you really want?” she pressed, her tone sharp and desperate.
Logan’s brow furrowed even more as he spoke softly, “Isabella, you’re my close friend. I’ll always look out for you. But that’s all you’ll ever be to me. Just get some rest. I’ll handle the necklace thing.”
He ended the call quickly and headed straight home. When he walked in, just a couple of staff said hi.
He’d never really noticed before, but now he realized how comforting it was to see Eliana waiting at home.
Eliana always acted like she didn’t matter, and it wouldn’t matter if she disappeared.
Maybe for the first few days after losing her, that was true. He barely felt anything at all, maybe even a strange sense of freedom. But after a while, reality started crashing down.
Life without her wasn’t some dramatic heartbreak, everything just felt cold and empty, like he couldn’t find a single place to feel at ease.
Logan stepped into his study alone, uncorked a bottle of wine, and settled by the window, letting the city lights blur as he started drinking by himself.
He’d polished off the whole bottle before he even realized it.
Hazy with alcohol, his mind spinning, Logan found himself reaching for his phone, his fingers drifting to that all–too- familiar contact without even thinking.
When Eliana first left, Logan wasn’t worried at all. He was sure she’d come back in just a couple of days, like it was only a matter of time.
But now, with the one–month separation period nearly up and Eliana still not showing any intention of returning, it was Logan who was starting to get restless.
Without even thinking, Logan’s finger tapped the call button. As soon as he realized what he’d done, panic hit and he hung up in a hurry, heart pounding.
But before he could even process it, Eliana’s call popped up on his screen.
Seeing her name flash across his phone, Logan’s heart nearly stopped. He sucked in a breath, picked up, and pretended nothing had happened. “Wrong number,” he said, trying to play it cool.
“It’s fine, I actually needed to talk to you about something,” Eliana said.
“The hospital just got access to a new, top–notch treatment from abroad for Samuel’s eyes. They’re planning to use it on him, and I’ve already agreed to it.

“But since Samuel’s living with you, I thought I should give you a heads–up, just so there won’t be any misunderstandings later.”
Eliana had spent the last couple of days thinking it over and figured she should let Logan know. There’s no way to keep something like this secret. If he found out on his own, it’d just cause trouble.
He was Samuel’s dad, after all. Eliana didn’t think he’d refuse a good treatment for his son.
“Yeah, I already know. The doctor talked to me, and I agreed, Logan forced himself to sound calm as he replied, keeping his emotions tightly in check.
Hearing his steady tone, Eliana figured the doctor hadn’t mentioned Nathan, and she felt a wave of relief. “Good” she said “Anything else?” Logan asked, trying his best to keep his voice steady.
“That’s it,” Eliana said, and she was about to hang up, but then remembered something. One more thing, the separation period ends the day after tomorrow. Meet me at the courthouse. Don’t be late.
