Chapter 146

Dominic POV

I don’t move from my spot outside the office.

The walls in this house were built thick for privacy, sure, but not thick enough to stop a man from hearing his father casually ruin someone’s life.

I knew he was going to pull some shit.

My father never did anything, without benefit, you were never asking for a favor from my father, only a deal that favor him.

Marriage.

He never outright said it, but Ellie is smart enough to get it. My hands curl at my sides, nails biting into my palms hard enough to ground me.

That ass. He could help her.

That’s the part that makes my blood boil.

He absolutely could intervene, pull strings, make calls, bury evidence under a mountain of Alpha authority. He’s done worse for less. But he won’t. Because this locks Ellie neatly into place.

I stare at the door like I might put my fist through it.

From inside, Ellie asks again if he is sure there is nothing he can do.

Her voice is quieter this time. Like she already knows the answer and is asking anyway, because hope is a stupid thing.

“Is there really no other way?”

My father doesn’t hesitate.

“Appologizes child, but I am tied to the world as you are. Thought, I must say, you are very brave to try and save you’re mother’s fate. I wish… I could have gotten to know her more.”

Just like that.

Final.

The door opens a second later.

Ellie steps out, and I swear the temperature in the hallway drops ten degrees.

She’s furious, eyes blazing, jaw tight, shoulders squared as he pushes past me. She’s limping, trying to hide it.

I’m going after her quick, reaching for her arm.

“Ellie-hey. Slow down.”

She doesn’t.

Her breathing’s off, all fast and shallow. She I hep her feel better, but it’s not a cure. That sharp edge of panic creeping in, the kind that ends with her on the floor and me carrying her back to a hospital bed she hates.

“Hey! Breath! Let me help you,” I say, softer than I mean to. “We should go back. You shouldn’t be-”

She shoves my hand away.

Hard.

“Just, stop. I–I don’t want anything from you,” she snaps, voice shaking with rage and something worse underneath it. “Not you. Not your family. Not any of this.”

I stop short, my feet locking to the floor as she storms away from me. She pushes out the door into the gardens, like she is just looking for anywhere to go to cool off.

I stop at the edge of the doorframe, watching her go, hands in my pockets.

She’s pissed. I can’t even blame her. And I can’t comfort her either.

All of her ways out come back to me, someone she seems to hate. Tolerate.

I don’t know. All I know is I felt more then useless, the cool wind blowing through my hair.

Then…she wobbles.

I freeze.

She…falls.
