Chapter 113
Freda’s pov
Today was my second day working at the only cafe that offered me a
job. It was not far from my mother’s house and close to school as well,
I could move to and fro without any problem.
“This goes to that last table by the booth, it’s coffee for the man and
juice for the lady”
Laura, my coworker said pushing a tray to my front. I picked up the
tray without saying anything to her, she wasn’t very nice, I noticed
that yesterday, she just gave out orders and didn’t talk much, I
expected her to educate me on how to handle things but she didn’t
and the manager very well asked her to do that.
“Try not to break anything today,” she said dryly without looking up
from her phone. I had broken a few glasses yesterday because the
content on the tray was a lot, today it was just two, and nothing was
going to happen to the glasses.
“Hi,” I said, getting to the table, my smile was broad on my face, the lady smiled back at me but the man didn’t even spare me a glance.

“Juice for the lady, and coffee for the gentleman,” I said, placing it in
front of each of them.
“Thank you,” the lady said and I smiled at her before returning to the
counter feeling proud of myself for not breaking the glasses.
I was getting the hang of it, I said to myself, my smile still plastered
on my face I went behind the counter waiting to receive orders from
Laura or any customers, it was just morning and we just opened a few
minutes ago, rush hour was going to happen soon so I was trying to
get in on my best behavior.
My cheeks were starting to hurt from smiling so much, just as I
decided to drop it and just wait, three men entered the cafe and I
immediately had on my smiling face again.
“Hi, how can we be of service to you,” I said and they snickered.
What?.
“She wants to be of service to us,” one of them said amidst each other
and they all chuckled including Laura who sat down like she wasn’t
paying attention, this used to be what she did, attend to them, get
them a seat and take orders for me to bring to them.
“She’s pretty so she can be of service to me,” the tallest amongst them
said and I frowned, they were being flirty and I didn’t appreciate it so

I maintained my frown on my face.
“Until you are ready to order something please step away from the
counter,” I said in the calmest way possible.
“Go drop off this iced tea at table six, Laura said getting up from
where she sat. I don’t know if she was trying to help me out but I
walked towards where the tray was and saw six glasses of iced tea and
immediately I backed out.
“You know I can’t carry all this at once,” I said and she just shrugged
her shoulders, there was no way I could carry all these glasses
without breaking them, but it was either the glasses or those filthy
men so I carefully lifted the tray and when I turned I heard one of the
men whistle.
“Damn we could have enjoyed her service”
I rolled my eyes and remained quiet as I walked with extra care
towards table six. I didn’t even make it to table three when my hands
started shaking. Just when I thought I could go further the whole
thing came crashing down loudly on the hard floor, all the customers‘
attention was on me.
“How clumsy”

“What the fuck”
“What was she thinking dropping the cups like that‘
“They should switch to plastic soon‘
I heard a few people around me say and tears welled up in my eyes as I bent down to pick up the glasses.
“Get a fucking broom I heard Laura say from the counter and a few
people snickered, I got up immediately go search for the broom when
one of the men that stood at the counter tried to hold my hand.
“I can-‘
“Get your hands off me you piece of shit,” I said angrily, I had learned
a lot of curse words from students in my school and I wasn’t bothered
about using them on them because they were pieces of shit.
“Come on now don’t be like that I-”
“I can’t have you talk to customers like that, not only do you go
around breaking all the mugs and cups but you want to be
disrespectful to customers,” Laura said and I frowned,
‘I wasn’t being disrespectful, and it wasn’t my fault that the glasses

broke, I already told you I couldn’t carry all of those glasses at once,
and y-”
“We don’t need people that blame others for their mistakes here, drop
the apron,” she said and I was taken aback, she was telling me off, and
I was getting fired.
“Look, im sorry, this is my first job ever and I know I’m ruining it but I
learn fast I promise I-”
“You can come to work for me,” another man said and I hesitated, I
took off the apron and dropped it on the desk, without another word I went to get my bag, and before I left I flipped them the bird and walked out of the cafe, I was jobless and I needed the money, sighing
I got home and met my mother at the stove.
“Why the long face?” She asked and I sighed, I took a seat and told her how my day went. I had once I found her I only needed a little
experience when she asked about my job. And I expected her to
complain but she just smiled and hugged me.
“I know you’re trying to do your best and have fun. But don’t worry, I
have everything under control, it’s okay,” she said patting me on the
head, I took in a whiff of her smell and I felt calmer, maybe I wasn’t
going to worry, at least for now.
