Damien’s Poy
Clean out Steve’s room, gather all his things, and send them to the warehouse
220
My sentence was cut short by a knock on the large mahogany door that had probably seen more centuries than I had.
“What is it?” 1 barked at whoever stood behind the door. This was no time for interruptions. I needed my brother’s room cleared
immediately.
Your Highness, your uncle wishes to have a word.”
I sighed, signaling the servants in the room to open the door.
“What is it, Uncle?” I said without interest. I wasn’t in the mood for conversation.
“Sorry to disturb you, but I need to see my brother.” He stood tall before me. If we weren’t naturally pale, I would have questioned why his skin appeared so faint. My uncle was a tall man, all lean muscle, and despite that, one couldn’t miss the deathly aura around him. It made me glad to have someone like him on my side.
“For what purpose?”
“Nothing serious. If you like, you can walk with me. I only wish to see him with my own eyes to behold what’s become of him.”
It wasn’t a bad request, and one I could easily grant.
“Hmm. Seeing him will improve my foul mood.” I said because it was true. The glint of defeat in my father’s eyes was nostalgic. After stretching, I turned to face the servants. “Lock up everything emptied from Steve’s room and bring the keys to me. Tend to my horses they’ve been neglected too long. I’ll be in the dungeons if anyone seeks my presence. Important people only,” I reminded them before walking out with my uncle following silently.
“Wouldn’t it be better to dispose of Steve’s things rather than hoard them?”
“It would be wise to trash them, but why do that so soon? He might have kept something of value to me. Besides, he was close to my father. Perhaps Father gave him something valuable. Who knows?” The walk to the dungeon passed by my chambers, and my mind drifted
to Freda.
I wondered how she was faring alone with Elara. I knew how frightening Elara could be, let alone to my sweet mate who knew nothing about her. I hoped they were getting along, though who was I kidding? They could never get along. I only hoped Elara was patient with
her.
“What could be of value among Steve’s things? His properties are as worthless as he was. You should get rid of them.”

Chapter 54

Uncle had a point, but my reasons for keeping Steve’s things were mine alone. Maybe I should instruct the servants to take everything to the field and burn it later. But I wasn’t going to let my uncle know I’d changed my mind.
“I’ll do with his things as I see fit.”
“Whatever you say, my king.”
It was the first time since he’d arrived that he’d called me his king. A great sense of pride filled me. Someday my Freda would experience the wonderful feeling of being worshiped. I planned to make her see the benefits of ruling beside me. She needed to know what it felt like to be in control. I could tell she hadn’t lived a great life as a hybrid, always under someone else’s control. It was time for her to feel the power of being in command, and I was certain she’d love it.
The dungeon gate opened with a metallic screech that irritated my ears. I blocked out the noise until the gates were fully open.
“Your Highness.” The guards bowed to me, then quickly to my uncle, before grabbing a torch and leading the way. I didn’t have to say where I was going or whom I wanted to see–only my father was confined here.
“This is rather a pleasant dungeon for my brother.”
I shrugged. If I didn’t know how little my uncle cared for my father, I’d say he had reason for constantly trying to turn any talk about
Father into criticism.
