Chapter 61
Damien’s POV

Leaving Freda with the wolf wasn’t something I wanted to do, but I had to deliver the information about the coronation ceremony quickly. The things I did and would do for her, she had no idea.
As soon as I left the dungeon, I regretted it. I didn’t want to be far from her at all, and it put me in a foul mood.
“Your Highness, Verestina is in the castle and refuses to leave until she speaks to you. We’ve tried to get her to move, but that’s proven futile.
The guard who rushed to my side spoke quickly. I frowned. This was not the time for conversations about Verestina, so I ignored him and kept walking toward the throne room where the official messenger kept watch.
“My Lord, what do we do? She’ll soon storm the castle if you don’t give me orders to use whatever means necessary to remove her.”
He paused mid–sentence. Our heads turned in the same direction as we both saw Verestina marching angrily toward us. The guard immediately drew his sword and took a step toward her, but I stopped him before he could injure her. As much as I wanted him to be rid of her, I didn’t think she deserved death.
“King Draken would never try to keep me out of the castle, let alone have is filthy guards lay a finger on me.”
“Leave us,” I said to the guard. I could see the hesitation in his eyes, but he nodded and left.
“I sent him away so he wouldn’t hear me embarrass you further. Your play me around the castle is over. You should learn to stay only where you’re welcome.”
She seemed to think I was joking as she moved closer and tried to place her hand on my chest. I caught it before it could touch me.
“I won’t repeat myself, Verestina. I’m not Damien to you anymore, I’m your king. You should know what they do to people who disrespect the crown. Just because we’ve been intimate doesn’t mean you get a pardon. This is the only one I’m giving you. Don’t try this again. Now leave.”
1 let go of her hand and walked away. I didn’t look back to see if she’d gon, but I knew she wouldn’t dare defy me again.
As I made my way to the throne room, I came across my uncle. I gritted teeth. He was another person I wasn’t in the mood to see today.
“Your Highness. He greeted me with a nod.
I continued toward the throne room. He followed.

“That’s all. Let them know a meeting will be held at an announced date son concerning the preparations. I waved the guard off.
“What is this about, Damien?”

My uncle asked again. I frowned.
“It’s Your Highness to you.”
“If you don’t take the crown soon, it’ll remain Damien! I’m still your uncle not your right–hand man, at least not yet.”
He had a point. But I wasn’t in the mood, so I stood up and walked out of the room toward the dungeon. I saw Freda coming out on her own.
“What happened to coming down to find me if I stayed too long?” She smiled sweetly at me.
All my sour mood turned sweet. I smiled back and walked toward her.
“I was attending to the
Coronation issue.” I couldn’t help myself. I grazed her cheek with the back of my hand. Her face grew red, and I grew
hard instantly. Luckily, the dress pants I wore were large enough to hide my reaction.
The need to pin her to the wall was overwhelming. I’d never wanted a woman the way I wanted her. If she knew just how much I wanted to devour her, she would surely flee and I didn’t want that.
“What did you discuss with your father?”
She sighed, though her smile didn’t leave her face. “We talked about this and that, but mostly about my time at home. He sought forgiveness,
and I-”
“Did you forgive him?”
I knew her love for her father ran deeper than her hatred. I saw her fumble with her expression, and I knew she was getting there. If I were in her shoes, there would be nothing to forgive. But she was soft, and that was the difference between us. At least her father loved her, and that was good enough for me.
I guess I did. I don’t know, I think I did long ago.”
I smiled. This time I boldly cupped her cheek with my palm, enjoying the smoothness of her skin. My thumb moved toward her ear as I stared at her face,
“It’s alright, Freda. I promise you won’t ever feel alone here.”
I meant it. She smiled at me and nodded.
“Go rest. I’ll have your maid fetch you something to eat.
She nodded again before turning to walk away. I did nothing but stare at sighed loudly, trying to keep myself in check as I spotted my uncle talking
ass. The little sway in her hips when she walked was dangerous. a maid.
I walked toward him but paused when I heard him ask the maid about Fre. Id forgotten hed followed me out of the throne room and must have seen my interaction with her.
Well, I supposed it was time to tell him.
