Chapter 63
Freda’s POV
Damien held my hand, which took me by surprise. “Who are we going to see?”
Even Elara, whom he regarded as important, had come to my room. Now he was permitting me to leave to see someone. And he was being
touchy.
The last time I’d walked the palace halls was when I’d arrived with my father. They seemed brighter than my chamber. Damien, being a vampire, loved the dark, and I didn’t mind so much. His ruby eyes glistened better in the darkness.
“We’ll be having dinner,” he said.
“I already had dinner with Christie.”
“Just pretend to eat if you’re full.” He responded as we walked further. “You said you ate with Christie?”
He seemed to just register my statement.
“I meant Christie served me dinner.”
“If you can’t bear eating more, signal to me and I’ll end the dinner.”
I nodded.
I clutched his hand suddenly, and he turned to look at me, giving me a satisfactory smile. We approached the dining area, and I saw a man sitting with his gaze fixed on me. His eyes never left me until Damien pulled out a seat.
After Damien sat, he cleared his throat. “Uncle Kieran, meet Freda. My mate.”
Uncle? His father’s brother? The father he’d killed? Wouldn’t the uncle be aggressive about that?
“Your mate?‘ Uncle Kieran’s eyes widened. He gazed at me again. You have a beautiful mate here, Your Highness.”
“Thank you, Uncle Kieran.”
Damien looked at me as if he didn’t approve, and I pressed my lips shut.
“I thought I’d keep the introduction until the coronation, but since you sened curious here she is. Your queen–to–be.”
“Where did you find this one? The blood club, like you found Verestina?”
‘Uncle…” Damien’s voice sent a warning.
Uncle Kieran raised his hands in surrender. Easy now, Damien. You’ve never been so defensive
“Freda is a calm and reserved woman. I won’t tolerate you talking about delity in front of her.”
“No, Uncle Kieran,‘ I interrupted Damien. I want to know about the blood club and Verestina too, I know she’s unpleasant, I met her once but

Damien won’t tell me anything about his past yet.”
One of Damien’s brows arched as he looked at me. “You’ve never said you wanted to know anything about me.”
He frowned.

“You never gave me the chance to ask.
His gaze didn’t leave mine for a long moment. I regretted my words.
Uncle Kieran laughed, easing, or perhaps worsening the tension. “If you and Damien are yet to know each other, where did he meet you? You don’t seem like the blood club type. Did he get you from the Chapel?”
“Worse.” I said, eating a steak to seem busy. “Our meeting wasn’t usual.”
“Uncle Kieran, you seem very interested in how I met my mate. Why is this of such interest to you?”
“Because I don’t believe you, Damien. I know you. You’d rather have hundreds of women than be committed to one.”
“Freda satisfies me. There’s no one I’d rather be committed to.”
My heart raced. My gaze shifted from his face to his lips. Satisfy him? Whatever he meant by that.
“How gentle have you made him?” Uncle Kieran taunted me. “I see he hasn’t claimed you yet. The Damien I know wouldn’t wait for the
coronation to do that.”
“Kieran, do you need to visit the blood club? I see you’re hungry for gossip to satisfy your boredom.”
“You’re right. Freda is beautiful. I wonder if she has sisters as lovely as she is.”
“You’re an old man. Freda is too young for you.”
Damien retorted.
Uncle Kieran snickered. “Coming from a hundred–year–old vampire, that’s very bold.”
I looked at Damien. Not once had I thought about his age because of how good he looked. But this man had lived for a hundred years and more long before I was born. His rage was understandable, and so was his wisdom for royal affairs.
As his mate, I questioned myself. Was he someone I wanted to spend the st of my life with? Yes, something inside me answered. I knew it was just the longing desires I felt when I was beside him.
Would this man let me be free? I knew he cared, and he did listen to song suggestions I made. But as they say, in marriage, his decisions mattered most.
“This must be overwhelming for you, Freda. Uncle Kieran spoke again. Heng a queen suddenly. Having all this power, ruling nations, coming
into such wealth.”
“It is overwhelming, Uncle. But I like it.” I said, seeing a small smile on the corner of Damien’s lips. I like being around Damien, and I trust his decisions.”

“That’s a great way to qualify as a queen, trusting the king and his decisions.” He drank a cup of wine. ‘How then did you feel about his decision to kill his brother and lock his father up?”
*Enough!” Damien’s voice made the room tense. “You will not say another word, Kieran!”
His uncle nonchalantly raised his hands in submission.

We all ate silently as I thought about his uncle’s words. How could I tell him that my father was also locked in the prison of the man I was
supposed to marry?
“I’ve lost my appetite.” Damien pushed his plate from the table noisily. “Let’s go, Freda.”
I jumped from my seat and immediately followed him before he could say another word. As we walked, he stopped and turned to me, his eyes
burning.
“Why did you entertain such questions?”
“I… I-”
“You’re a queen. You don’t need anyone to like you as long as I do!”
“Damien, calm down.” I raised my tone slightly.
“Goodness. You’ve learned his words.”
“No, I-” I moved closer to him. “There’s no need to get so protective, Damien.” I placed my hand on his chest, feeling his racing heartbeat.
Was this why he’d locked me in the chamber? Because he didn’t want others to talk to me? Or because he didn’t trust my decision to become
queen?
“I satisfy you, you said,” Our gap closed until my body touched his. “How?
He looked down at my lips and leaned closer, “For simply existing, Freda.”
Our heartbeats intertwined, beating at the same time. I wanted him. It was that strong. I silently prayed this wouldn’t ruin my escape plan. Would I be able to stay away from the mate bond?
Damien suddenly pulled away from me, an unusual thing when he was the close. “You said I didn’t give you the chance to know about me. Tell me, what do you want to know?”
He asked, walking into the chamber,
A smile curled my lips. He would let me know him now? That was an impvement.
“For a start, you’re a hundred years
old?
“Is that a surprise? I’m one of the youngest. How much do werewolves age compared to vampires?”
“Well, wolves can reach seventy, and some a hundred. I’m eighteen.”

“I know. You behave like one.”
I laughed heartily. I’m going to take that as a compliment, Damien.”
