Chapter 68
Damien’s POV
Browsing through the records of past coronation ceremonies in the
throne room with Uncle Kieran, I looked through every scroll trying
to understand the rites that came with the ceremony.
“This one says that sweet blood be offered to the Uncle of the king,”
Uncle Kieran said.
I chuckled. That was a lie.
“That’s not true, Kieran.”
He shrugged. “How would you know? You’re not the one reading from
the scroll, are you?”
I smiled. It was exhausting trying to make everything perfect. I
rubbed my temple and looked straight ahead through the opened
doors. It was as if I’d conjured her up by staring too hard.
Agatha, the head maid, strode toward me.
“Your Highness,” she said with a bow. I greeted her back. She gave a

courtesy bow to my uncle and turned her attention back to me.
“What brings you here, Agatha?”
“Your Highness, I would like to report a certain maid to you. I’m sure
you’ve also noticed, but Christie is becoming far too comfortable with
the queen. Christie is a stubborn child and often disobedient. I feel
she’s nothing but bad company for Her Highness. I ask that you
remove Christie from Her Highness before it’s too late.”
Was Christie a bad influence? I couldn’t say I hadn’t noticed their
closeness. I’d just thought it was nothing significant since Freda was
happy with her. I didn’t realize they were close enough for even
Agatha to complain.
“Has she done anything that should raise my concern?” Surely the
maid wouldn’t try anything stupid to hurt Freda.
“No, Your Highness, but who’s to tell what evil thoughts she’s putting
in her head?”
“You mean my mate’s head?” I frowned.
“I meant Christie, Your Majesty. What if she tries to hurt the queen?”
“She wouldn’t dare.” I snapped. “How does this concern you, Agatha?”

“The welfare of the royals is my priority, my king. Christie should be
nowhere near Her Highness, as she’s beginning to see herself above
- us. She rarely joins us for duties in the kitchen and only sees herself
fit to serve the queen.”
“How can such a young girl see herself as higher than you?” Kieran
added.
“I’m worried because the queen consents to Christie’s attitude. This
has given Christie unusual confidence. There’s a high possibility Christie is filling the other maids‘ heads with nonsense. She should
never be trusted.” Agatha said.
I frowned. I didn’t like the information I was receiving. I’d thought
Christie was a better choice when I picked her, but perhaps I was
wrong.
“I’ve also noticed this,” Kieran said. “It’s not fitting for a queen to
lower herself by making friends with a mere maid. What happens when the news spreads? People are already skeptical of her, and some
haven’t deemed her worthy enough to serve beside you. What
happens when they learn she’s being influenced, not even by a Noble,
but by a servant girl who isn’t even a full vampire?”
This angered me more. The thought of my people not accepting Freda bothered me. If these sorts of rumors spread, it would raise questions
about her authority.

“I’ll see to this. Thank you.‘
“Your Highness,” Agatha coughed. “If you need a replacement, I can
find another competent maid for you.”
“Never mind. If Christie were to be replaced, you would do the job.”
“That would be an honor, Your Majesty.” She smiled widely and, with
a bow, left.
“You’ve been attending to pressing matters since your mate arrived.
You haven’t rested. Is she good luck or bad luck?” Kieran taunted.
“She’s new to all this, Uncle Kieran. Moreover, I take pleasure in seeing my mate every time. If there’s something to scold her about,
I’ll be glad to see her face again.”
Kieran laughed, holding his chest tightly like I’d given him a heart attack. “You’re such a lover boy. Who would have thought? I thought
Steve would be the only lovesick fool.”
I frowned at the mention of my twin brother. Sometimes I felt awful for killing him. Most times I was glad he and our father hadn’t killed me first. And very few times, I felt pity for him. Maybe if he hadn’t been so foolish and hungry for power, he would have seen through
our father’s devious plans to make him king.

And not just him all the elders and nobles too. If they knew the plans
our father had for them to make Steve king, they wouldn’t have been
on his side.
“You haven’t told me why you’re on my side, Kieran. You used to like
Steve too, even if you said I was your favorite. But you don’t seem
remorseful about what’s happening.”
Kieran’s countenance changed immediately. “I see myself in you,
Damien. That’s why I’m on your side. Your father, who happens to be
my brother did the same thing.” He walked toward me and patted my
shoulders. “Shall we say this is a generational curse? Draken
supported my father in his schemes to crown him king. They won, and
look where I am. The blood drunk uncle who comes into the castle
and makes himself a nuisance.”
He heaved heavily. “Damien, I’m just happy you won the fight against
your father. You took the throne. Having this throne is what any
vampire would desire to make a name and history for himself. Your
father was the most powerful king though he made bad decisions and
used his power to his own advantage. I know you’ll be a great king
filled with wisdom.”
I studied him for a moment. He seemed broken, as always. “Before you bore me with your sad stories, I need to be with my mate.”
I walked out of the throne room.
