Chapter 69
Freda’s POV
When Christie insisted on bathing me, I found it strange, so I refused.
my
She never left my room instead, she made conversation from my
chamber while I bathed.
“If Mother was here, she would be so proud of me. Lady Agatha took
care of me. I expected she’d be glad I was appointed to the queen’s
chamber. Or teach me more to improve my competency.”
I rubbed the sponge on my body, melting the soap into my skin. Her
words brought me back to my own mother.
“I’m sure Lady Agatha is just protective of her position. It doesn’t
mean she hates you.” I said, even though I knew it wasn’t true. It was
evident Lady Agatha was jealous of what Christie had,
“I think so too. I’ll apologize to her soon for my incompetency.” She agreed with me. “Her son is kind to me, though.” I could hear a blush
in her voice.
“Her son?” I chuckled. Water ran down my body and face, and I felt
relieved of all mental stress.

“He doesn’t work in the palace. He visits once in a while. With gifts
too…” Her last sentence trailed off like she didn’t want to reveal
more. If Lady Agatha’s son was giving her gifts, his mother likely
wasn’t aware.
“It’s okay. You’re safe here.” I said, and she laughed heartily. It had
been a long time since I’d heard her voice so full of life. I remembered
her words about me making Damien feel alive again.
I didn’t want to think too much about it. Was he happy with me? Were
his expressed feelings true? I tapped my forehead. Of course they
were true. If they weren’t, how did I explain the longing I felt every
day?
The pretense of sleep I faked so he would wrap his arms around me at
night.
“Freda!” His voice wasn’t the calm, inviting tone he usually had when
he wanted to discuss our mate bond. It was fierce, and it startled me
in the bathroom.
“Where is Freda?” I heard him ask Christie, who was obviously
trembling.
“In the… bathroom…”

“Leave this chamber now and do not come back unless ordered by
me!” He growled, and I heard Christie scurry out the door. “Freda!” He
yelled again.
I wondered what could have made him upset in such a short period.
We’d just had a walk in the garden. It had been romantic and sweet.
Was it the burn that had made him so angry? Has it not healed?
“Freda, I know you can hear me.” He growled again. “You’ve been too
carefree lately.”
“That’s a good attribute, Damien. Why the rage?” I frowned, rinsing
water from my face so I could hurry to join him. Why were his mood
swings so unpredictable?
“Christie is a maid. I hear you’re tolerating disrespect from her.”
“Christie is my friend, Damien.” I snapped.
“Queens are not friends with servants!” He growled.
I burst out of the bathroom, holding my fists together like I was
stopping myself from punching him. “You don’t tell me what to do,
Damien!”
“I am your king!”

“And I’m not your queen yet! If you’re so embarrassed by my attitude, then let me go!” I screamed at him like there was pent–up rage stored
inside me.
He could stop me from doing anything else, but Christie was the only person I had here. The least he could do was let me be with her when he wasn’t with me. She kept me company and made me happy.
“You took my family away from me, and now that I try to build one,
you’re against it!”
“Freda, listen-” His voice suddenly softened.
“No, Damien. You listen to me this time!” I snapped before he could manipulate me with his soothing voice.
“No, Freda… you’re-” He swallowed and turned his back to me.
“You’re naked.”
I froze, slowly looking down at my body. I was dripping water, my bare form exposed for Damien to see. “I… I…” I tried to find a nearby
cloth to cover up, but a hand held me back.
Damien’s gaze swept me from head to toe. “I’ve never seen anything like this in the blood club,” he muttered, his gaze locked on my
breasts. I flushed with both embarrassment and desire.

He hadn’t been listening to what I was saying this whole time? Why
had it taken him so long to tell me I was naked?
“You don’t get to see this.” I dropped my hand from his and rushed to
the bed to get a blanket. There was nothing but a shawl, which only
covered my breasts.
It was as if I’d deliberately shifted his gaze lower, as his piercing eyes
focused deeply between my thighs. I felt myself grow red and hot with
desire.
My heart started to pound. I wanted Damien. I wanted this man who
had just finished yelling at me. He took a step forward, and I could
swear my nipples hardened.
“Don’t… come… close.” I stuttered. I didn’t mean it. I was lying. I needed him as close as he could be. Inside me, if that was possible
tonight.
“You’ve tempted me for far too long, Freda.” He growled, coming
closer. “I want you, my mate.” His eyes reddened.
I gulped down the remaining self–control I had and licked my dry lips when I saw Damien’s arousal strain against his pants. “I… want you,
Damien.” I couldn’t believe I’d uttered that.

With his speed, he dashed close to me. His body pressed against
mine. His fingers held my jaw, and I closed my eyes as his other hand
caressed my thighs.
He raised my chin and planted a kiss on my nose, teasing toward my
lips. I grabbed his lips before he could tease me further, but a knock
on the door startled me.
