MATED TO THE VAMPIRE KING SON
Chapter 85
Freda’s POV
“Why didn’t you say anything when Beta Gerald challenged Damien
to a fight, knowing full well he could be killed?”
I said to my father when we finally got the chance to talk.
“Gerald is nothing but a fool who was bound to get himself killed one
way or another. I thought it wouldn’t be a crime to end up in the same
place his brother went. You stopped it
He looked at me with an expression I’d never seen before. Was that
pride? Was it astonishing? What was it?
“I was lucky Damien listened to me. It would have been a different
story if he hadn’t.”
I sighed. My legs were hurting from standing all day. I was tired, and I
needed to just disappear to a place where I could finally rest. All the drama from the past few days weighed on me. My father had
questioned me yesterday about what happened to Lily. I’d told him what Lily did but somehow had to sugarcoat what Damien did to her. I had no idea why I was protecting him.

“Well then, it’s a good thing he did.” He paused. “Sorry I couldn’t get
Kara to come. Not everyone can be here, and I know how much you
miss her.”
“Should have dropped Lily for her,” I muttered under my breath, but
he heard me.
“Kara is not blood, Freda-”
“But she’s family.” I replied. “Everybody who came with you wants to
either have my head taken off or blame me for something I didn’t do.
Nobody likes me.”
My voice broke. I couldn’t look at him, so I stared at my fingers. We
were standing by the hallway close to where Damien was holding his meeting with the nobles. I’d intended to join the meeting, but I had
to speak to my father first.
My father sighed. He didn’t come close to me or try to comfort me
because he knew this was all his fault. It was his fault I never got to
live normally. It was his fault I was trapped in a life I didn’t want.
“The coronation ceremony approaches faster as we speak. I’ve made
plans and understood the layout of this castle. I’m familiar with the
outside, beyond these walls. You, on the other hand, should know by
now the inner workings of this castle.”

He leaned closer like he didn’t want anyone listening. “We need to
know the arrangements for that day. We need to make sure everyone
is too busy to notice you. And we need someone to do this with you. I
haven’t decided, but if you know someone you can trust, let me know
immédiately. Time is not on our side.”
When he mentioned someone I could trust, my mind instinctively
went to Christie. She was the only person in the castle I trusted. But
that was a lie. She wasn’t the only person I trusted. If I told Damien I
wanted to leave, would he let me leave? Would he understand my
need for freedom? I highly doubted that.
“I could just do this on my own. I don’t know anybody in the castle
who will run away with me.”
I wasn’t putting Christie in danger if the plan failed and we got
caught.
“You can, but what we need is security Don’t forget, you shall be
crowned that day. You become a valuable asset, and you need
someone watching your back. I wish I could be this person myself,
but…”
His words got drowned in my head as I stared behind him at the figure walking angrily toward our direction. It was Damien, and he
was upset.

“Are you with me?” I heard my dad say.
I nodded. Lies. I wasn’t with him. My focus was on Damien. He hadn’t
seen me, but as soon as his eyes landed on me, the mood shifted, and
the air sizzled. I couldn’t tell if it was in my head or if even my father
could notice the sudden change in the air.
This man was mine, I thought to myself as I stared openly at him.
He reached me and, with one arm, pushed my body close to his. His
arm went around my waist, holding me in a tight grip as he bent his
head to take my lips in a kiss.
My father was forgotten.
し
I kissed him back, pressing my chest to his. My hands left my sides to
reach his neck, but before I could wrap them around him, we were
torn apart. Damien was shoved to the wall by my father, and my eyes
flew wide open.
“Father! What are you doing?!”
Damien got up from the floor and shoved my father to the wall,
pinning him down.
“Damien, don’t!” I rushed toward him.

He turned to look me in the eyes before returning his gaze to my
father.
“You werewolf, keep testing me. If you weren’t her father, I would
have taken your head off. I don’t know why I’ve been so patient with
you.”
He released my father from his grip, and he fell to the floor coughing.
I rushed to his side.
“The next time you lay a finger on my daughter, I promise that will be
the last time.” My father said with menace in his eyes.
Damien scoffed and walked away toward our chamber.
“Are you okay? Can you stand?”
He nodded, rising to his feet like he hadn’t been on the ground
seconds ago.
“You need to leave this place before he does something worse to you.”
It was at the tip of my tongue to tell him Damien had done far more
intimate things than kiss me, but I said nothing as I gave him a nod
and excused myself. I needed to see Damien now. Something had
happened that put him in such a foul mood, and I wondered what it
