Chapter 89
Freda’s POV
I didn’t utter a word as we walked in silence to the meeting room. I
wondered what it was that he was eager to show me. What had he
obtained that made him cut me off from my satisfaction? These
questions filled my head as I fought to dismiss them.
“Relax, Freda. It’s just a gift.” He paused.
Could he tell I wasn’t relaxed?
“But you won’t tell me what it is.” I pouted.
He chuckled. “It’s not much of a surprise gift if I tell you.”
I understood, but I couldn’t stop trying to guess what it was.
“Don’t worry. You’ll love this gift.” He kissed my forehead.
I immediately wanted it to be my lips, so I raised my head. Without saying anything, he took my mouth, kissing me like he was ready to rip my clothes off and take me in the hallway.

My mind drifted to our moment not long ago.
“Where did your mind go?” I heard him say.
It was then I realized he’d stopped kissing me. I blushed, and he
chuckled.
“Naughty girl.”
I blushed even harder. We resumed walking, and the guards outside
the meeting room greeted us before opening the door. In the corner
of the room, I saw a shadow. It was very much feminine. Was it a new
maid?
The closer we got to the shadow, the more my heartbeat increased. I
had no idea why it began beating that fast.
“I know how much stress you’ve been under lately, and I know I’m not
so much fun to talk with. But I brought you somebody I hope can
make you feel better.”
The figure turned. My heart pounded loudly.
Kara.
“Kara?!” I questioned like I wasn’t staring at her. I found it hard to

believe she was standing there. “Is this some kind of power vampires
have and-”
“It’s me, you dumb sucker.”
Before I even realized it, my arms were in the air as I ran to hug her.
I’d missed her so much. Tears streaked down my face.
است
I wasn’t just crying because she was here–I was crying because
Damien had thought of me. He’d done this to make me happy. I
opened my eyes to look at him while still hugging Kara, and I
mouthed the words “Thank you.”
He smiled at me sweetly, and I swore I saw love in his eyes. My heart
sank.
“I shall leave you two to catch up and do whatever it is girls do. I’ll be
down the hall if you need me.”
He turned to walk away.
“No way that’s your man!” Kara said.
I giggled. We sure had a lot to talk about. I squinted from the corner
of my eye, giving her a signal to let Damien leave completely first, as I was certain his ears were sharp.

“I’m going to cry.” I pouted. “I can’t believe you’re here.”
I held her hands. I didn’t care if we looked like playful teenagers. I’d
missed my best friend, and Damien was right–she was the solution to
this loneliness.
As we reached my chamber, I pulled her in and hugged her again,
spinning her around. “Kara, you’ve grown.”
I said, admiring her new figure.
“It’s barely been two months. Stop.” She laughed, falling onto my bed.
“Freda, look at you. Living in a castle, having such a hot mate, being
queen–to–be, and… your skin is radiant, Freda.”
I fell on the bed beside her as both our gazes met the high ceilings of
my room. “A life I’ve always wished for indeed, Kara.”
I sighed.
“I came to rescue you.” She said.
I sprang up, sitting on the bed and facing Kara, who was still lying
down.
What did she mean by that?

“I know you’re not okay, Freda. If you were, you would have reached
out to me or invited me to this beautiful life you have. Something
must be wrong somewhere.”
“Yeah…” I muttered, breathing in.
“Licita’s death gave me the first clue. I knew you weren’t safe with the
vampires. What did they do to you? Is it him? Your mate?”
“Kara… my mate, Damien, he…” I didn’t know how to explain it to her.
Damien was the cause and solution to my problems, but did that even
make sense?
“If he hurt you, I swear I’ll stand with the werewolves in the war
against the vampires.”
“Relax, Kara, He didn’t hurt me. I think.” I rolled my eyes at my
uncertainty, “He loves me, but he’s keeping me.”
“Or locking you?” She sprang up from the bed.
“He wants my safety. That’s what he said.”
“Is that what you want?” She looked into my eyes.
I knew Kara could see through me. She knew what I wanted. No

matter how I tried to defend Damien, she knew there was still a void
left to be filled.
“I want to escape.” I said, standing up from the bed. “He means so
much to me, but I just need to go. I need to be free from all these
wars and disagreements.” I paced the room. “His people don’t like me.
My people don’t either. How can the two kingdoms be united under
our reign? How does this work?”
“Freda…”
“I don’t want to be queen. I just want to be with Damien in a faraway
place. Where he’s just like me–no vampire, no superpowers.”
“So how do you want this? Freda, you know I’ll support you in
everything you do.”
“I…” As I began to speak, a knock sounded on the door.
Christie asked if she could come in, and I accepted. She brought in
food as usual, beaming with a smile.
“I see the queen has a guest.” She muttered, bowing her head in
greeting to Kara.
“Kara, meet Christie.” I walked over to Kara, wrapping my arm around

her neck. “Christie, meet my best friend.” I kissed her on the cheek.
“Nice to meet you, Lady Kara. Queen Freda has mentioned a lot about
you.”
“Has she?” Kara arched her brows, and we both laughed when I rolled
my eyes.
“Christie has been my safe space since my arrival here. She’s a friend.”
“Thank you for taking good care of Freda, Christie.”
Christie nodded with a warm smile, serving food on the small table.
“The queen is vibrant now that you’re here. It’s so nice to meet you.”
She took her seat on the bedside beside Kara.
Kara smiled, but after a short silence, she signaled me with her facial
expressions about feeling uncomfortable. Then I remembered we’d
been discussing something before Christie came in.
I could tell Christie anything, but nothing about my escape for her
safety and for the risk of Damien finding out before time.
“Christie, can you come back in a few moments? Kara and I have some
catching up to do.”
