Freda’s POV
“Your father seemed calm today.” Kara said, locking our arms together
while we strolled out of the dining room.
“Yeah. Enough talk about my father. Let’s go have a look at the
gardens. I heard from Christie that it’s quite a spectacular sight at
night.”
Kara’s eyes brightened. She loved anything pretty, and it made me
smile.
Dinner had been suffocating. I could feel everyone’s gaze on me,
especially when Damien’s right hand was nowhere to be found. I couldn’t lift my head throughout dinner–I just stared at my food.
I hoped Damien didn’t notice me picking at my food because I barely
ate. Now that I was outside, I was starting to feel hungry. Maybe I
could sneak into the kitchen later or find a way to get to Christie so
she could arrange something small for me.
“Wow, this is amazing! We surely don’t have flowers like this back at
the kingdom.” Kara said, jumping around and smelling the flowers

one after another.
“You shouldn’t put your nose everywhere.”
She snickered. “I’m a werewolf. I can’t help it. Sniffing is what we do
for a living.”
I chuckled. She was right. You could never tell a wolf not to sniff.
I walked between a bed of roses and smiled widely, remembering my
walk with Damien. I could never forget how brightly he’d shone that
day, the way he’d held my hand. It was a beautiful walk.
“Where did you run off to?” I heard Kara say.
“Don’t tell me you and the vampire king have done it here.” She
squeezed her face like she was disgusted.
“No.” I said, flushing. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to make love between
these flowers, I thought to myself.
“Don’t tell me you’re thinking about it.”
“You know me so well.” We chuckled.
“There’s a fountain in the middle. Go check it out while I stand here

and daydream some more.”
“Did you dream about doing it in the fountain?” She asked with a
frown.
I smiled. “If you don’t go see it now, I will.”
She squealed, running toward the fountain. I laughed so hard. Maybe
this night wouldn’t be so bad, I thought as I made my way toward the
lily garden. I paused when I heard voices.
“Did you bring me here to the lilies because my name is Lily?”
I gasped. Who was she talking to? Verestina?
“No, I brought you out here because I wanted to talk to you. In my
eyes, you’re as pretty as these flowers, Lily.”
I heard a male voice I didn’t quite recognize. It was Marquess Theo. I
thought he didn’t talk. What happened to his shy side? He wasn’t shy
talking all sweet like that.
I needed to get Kara. She needed to hear what I was hearing.
I tiptoed back and went in search of Kara. I bumped into her on the
way, and immediately my fingers went to my lips, urging her to

remain silent. We sneaked back to see Theo holding Lily’s hand.
“I have a liking for you, Lily. I hate to admit it, but my eyes opened
better during dinner. You look exceptionally beautiful in this dress
tonight.”
Lily’s evil laughter caused Theo to drop her hand, startled. Kara and I
looked at each other and covered our mouths to avoid making a
sound. Lily’s laugh was annoying, but for some reason, hearing it
directed at someone else was humorous.
“A liking? You think you can like someone like me?” She snapped.
“What’s your position again… Marquess?” She muttered, looking at
his clothes like there was a badge or something. “Quite high, though.
But you don’t seem to hold power of courage. I don’t know, like
Damien, Freda’s mate. Aside from being the king, there’s something
about him.”
I frowned. She’d disrespected Damien right in front of me the other
day. He’d thrown her against the wall, and now she was praising him.
Was she jealous? Did she like Damien? She’d been close to Verestina
lately. Was this what they talked about?
“Scary?” Theo asked.
“No, not scary. He has an aura, and you don’t have that. You

approached me first. I don’t want that.” She tried to walk away, but
Theo pulled her back.
“What do I need to get you then? Do I need to stay away? I’m older
than Damien. What aura do you speak of?”
He squared his shoulders.
“Dominance. You approach me like you want me, and I have no
choice.”
He grabbed her hands aggressively. “I want you, Lily!”
She pushed him back. “Not like that, stupid!”
Kara suddenly burst out laughing, and I followed, dragging her away
from our hiding spot as we ran into the palace to prevent Lily from
seeing us. After we were out of sight, we burst out laughing, holding
each other’s shoulders.
“Lily is such a bully.” Kara laughed. “And she doesn’t deserve someone
as nice as that man.”
“Tell me about it. She was criticizing me for being with someone like
Damien. Now look–she admires my man.” I scoffed.

“Your man. That’s rather possessive for someone planning an escape.”
Kara said.
We both laughed.
“Oh, please don’t remind me. I just want to live in the moment.” I
walked toward my room, hoping Damien was done talking with Lady
Daphne.
“Good night, Freda.” Kara hugged me tightly. “Don’t let him break your legs. You wouldn’t be able to run on that day.”
“I’m still getting used to it, but I’ll surely give you all the details.” We waved goodbye, and I entered my chamber to see Damien waiting for
- me.
I could see the aura Lily had spoken about, and it made me blush.
