“Jesse, do you even know what you did?” Corey Spencer’s voice cut through the haze, sharp and freezing.
Jesse Spencer’s head pounded, her skin burning hot. Fever fogged her brain until the world. spun out of focus. Instinct–the kind hammered into her after three years behind bars–took over. She dropped heavily, her knees thudding hard against the floor.
“I was wrong! I won’t argue with Taylor anymore. Just… let me go…”
Wait… this feels wrong. That’s not concrete. That’s… sofi.
She blinked, fingers digging into the fibers. Carpet. What the hell? Carpet in
my cell?
Her chest tightened. This isn’t prison. No way.
Her eyes darted around. The rug beneath her–hers. Her room. The one she thought she’d never see again.
Her throat tightened as the truth sank in. No… this can’t be real. I’m back. I’m actually back. Twelve
years.
That very same day, Taylor Holman jabbed her finger at her and swore that Jesse had ruined her contest piece, then locked her in the bathroom. It was also the day Jesse refused to take the blame. Later that night, Corey dragged her outside, poured a bucket of ice–cold water over her head, and killed the room heater so she could “reflect on her mistake.”
That winter nearly ended her life. She burned with fever for three long days, slipping in and out of consciousness, fighting just to breathe.
While she lay there half–dead, Taylor basked in sympathy.
Corey lashed out at Jesse just to see Taylor smile again.
Andrew, the middle brother, who was a doctor, gave her medicine, coaxing her gently.
Mike, the fourth brother, stuck close by with warm water and towels, fawning over every detail.

Kaleb–the fifth–handed over Jesse’s hard–earned spot in the international design competition like it meant nothing.
Corey’s voice sliced through Jesse’s memory. How could you treat Taylor like this? Do you think Philip would forgive you? He died saving you!‘

Back in her first life, Taylor’s brother, Philip Holman, died in the fire. He dragged Jesse out of the flames, but she came out of it with holes in her memory.
The Spencers, eaten alive by guilt, opened their doors to Taylor, who had no one left–her parents were already gone. She wasn’t treated like a guest. She became family.
From then on, the words drilled into Jesse’s ears never stopped. ‘You owe her your brother. You owe her his life. You owe her everything.‘
Her brothers became Taylor’s; her opportunities became Taylor’s. Everything Jesse had worked for ended up in Taylor’s hands.
Jesse’s nails dug into her palms.
The missing memory slammed back into place. The fire wasn’t some accident–Philip had started it himself. He wanted to play the hero, and she was the price.
What made it worse? Taylor had locked the door after them, ready to watch the flames swallow them both.
By the time the Spencers rushed in, Taylor was already sobbing that she had lost her only family. Her voice cracked from the crying, raw with grief. Meanwhile, Jesse staggered out of the flames, and Philip was portrayed as her hero.
Taylor Holman–you’re nothing but a thief, a liar, a killer. Jesse’s chest heaved with rage.
Corey caught the look in her eyes and got it all wrong. He thought she was just being stubborn again, refusing to bow her head.
He clenched his jaw, already set on teaching her a harsher lesson. “You still don’t get it! No apology, no school. You’ll stay grounded until you learn.”
His glare bore down on her, confident she’d cave like always. With the design competition only three days away, she couldn’t afford not to.
Jesse pushed herself upright, a bitter laugh slipping past her cracked lips. Fever rattled through her, but she forced her back straight.
Corey’s temper flared again at the sight of her defiance.
Then, out of nowhere, she said, “Fine. I’ll apologize later.”
Her gaze cut into him, cold and unyielding. “Now get out. I need to change.”
Corey blinked, thrown by her tone. She appeared pale, her lips quivering, and her clothes clung

to her thin body. Yet, none of that registered. All he saw was her giving in at last and deciding wet clothes weren’t fit for apologizing to Taylor.
“Don’t take too long.” He left, door slamming shut.
When he finally disappeared, her body gave out. She collapsed against the bed, teeth gritted.
Every step to the closet was torture. Her bones ached like they’d been crushed. Her head split with pain. She managed to drag on dry clothes, then sank back into bed.
The blanket’s warmth swallowed her whole. It broke her. Tears slid down her cheeks.
Three years in prison, and she hadn’t slept warm once.
Her brothers had bribed guards to “teach her lessons” for Taylor’s sake. Days without food; nights without rest. Her body rotted away until cancer finished her.
Not this time. I won’t die like that again. She closed her eyes and drew a slow, steady breath. I’ve got a window before they come back–enough to sleep, to rest, to map my way out of this place.
She drifted into sleep.
:
“Jesse!”
The roar shook her awake.
Light exploded across the room, searing her eyes.
A rush of cold air crashed over her as the blanket was yanked away, and rough hands hauled her upright.
“You told Corey you’d apologize, and you’re in here napping? Taylor’s been speaking up for you, and this is what she gets? Unbelievable! Get up now!”
Mike’s fury filled the room.
Jesse’s stomach churned. Her head swirled as his trembling shook her to her core. She gagged, leaning toward him.
He stumbled back in shock.
Nothing came out. She hadn’t eaten, and pain distorted her features.
Mike sneered. “You’re faking again? Think acting sick will save you?”

Her voice scraped raw. “Let go. I can stand myself.”
He released her slightly, and she yanked her hand free.
For a split second, his frown deepened. D*mn, she’s burning up.

Then, he shrugged it off. Taylor’s the one who’s really been through hell, and she’s still shaking from the cold. And she? Standing here all stubborn, acting like nothing can touch her.
His tone snapped sharply again. “Quit wasting time. Taylor’s waiting for you.”
