Corey frowned. He felt like there was something strange about Taylor’s eyes, but when he fixed
his gaze, all he saw was her submissive expression.
She whispered, “Corey, I don’t want to disappoint Mike. I’ll do my best!”
He grinned, ruffling her hair. “As long as your grades don’t tank. Finals are coming fast.”
Her heart skipped a beat. Finals? D*mn… I’ve been so caught up chasing the Spencer boys, trying to take Jesse’s place, I haven’t studied a thing.
Her fingers fidgeted in her lap. I can’t let my perfect student image crash now. I need a plan.
Didn’t they say someone could sneak cheat sheets into the exam? Maybe that’s my only shot.
Meanwhile, Mike was striding across campus with a dark cloud over his head. Let’s be real- Taylor just isn’t cutting it. The top–eight battle is just around the corner, and she’s still not ready. I need to bring in someone new.
His thoughts circled back to Jesse. D*mn it, this all goes back to Jesse. If she hadn’t gone so hard on Taylor and stormed off, none of this would’ve happened. If she were still here, she’d be training Taylor herself, and I wouldn’t be left in the lurch trying to find someone new.
His jaw clenched. This is all her game. She’s trying to force me to beg her back. She’s getting trickier by the day–no way! I’m not giving in.
Shouts from the plaza snapped him out of it.
High up in the sycamore’s branches, a drone was hopelessly tangled. The operator on the ground kept frantically hitting the controls, but the wings just rattled, stuck fast in the leaves.
Mike stopped, irritation flashing. Those clumsy moves… exactly like Taylor’s sloppy flying. Jesse would never look this pathetic.
It hit him like a punch, and he pushed it away. He’d vowed to himself not to ask her back.
He spun around to leave, then froze in place.
The buzzing came to a sudden stop.
The drone remained still in mid–air, its body leaning sharply at a 75–degree angle while its wings were positioned precisely.
Mike’s heart slammed against his ribs.

It swooped left, then right, gliding smoothly through the gaps in the branches like an arrow slicing through underbrush.
“D*mn, that’s slick!” The words flew out before he could catch himself.
A small crowd gathered, drawn in by the maneuver.
As captain of the Archebot Team, Mike had always been tough when evaluating drone skills. Yet this maneuver left him breathless.
He charged forward, his voice crackling with excitement. “Who’s flying that? That was insane! Come join my team–I want to meet you!”
At the console, Jesse heard him out. Her face stayed blank as she steered the drone back, then passed the controller to a junior, Ryan Colman.
Ryan gawked at the feed showing Mike’s face, practically shaking with excitement. He flailed his arms at Jesse. “Jesse, that’s Mike Spencer! Captain of the Archebot Team! You’re amazing–of course, he wants you! You’ve got to join!”
He looked more thrilled than the person actually flying.
Jesse landed the drone, her voice flat. “Not interested.”
She returned the controller to him.
Ryan blinked, then quickly added, “Oh, yeah–thanks for saving me back there! Can I get your contact, just in case I need help again?”
“No need.” A deep voice rang out behind him.
Lyman stood there, silent until now, towering like a wall of stone. He slipped Jesse behind him with ease, his words clipped and sharp. “My little sister’s still young. She has no business hanging around with strange men.”
Jesse was already twenty, a sophomore.
Still, watching him stand guard like that made her smile. She let him take her phone without a fuss. Truthfully, she hadn’t planned on giving Ryan her contact in the first place.
Lyman clasped her hand, steering her away.
Footsteps pounded across the plaza.
Mike sprinted in, his breath coming in ragged gasps, in hot pursuit of the drone.
Jesse’s eyes met his for half a second before she turned away, refusing to look at him.

His anger spiked instantly. All I asked for was a simple apology to Taylor. Instead, she storms out, throws “Mr. Mike Spencer” in my face, and walks away. Now she can’t even look me in the eye? What makes me so repulsive to her?
