Chapter 1
Chapter 1
[His tongue wouldn’t leave my pussy for even a second.]
A message lit up Aveline Russell’s phone, accompanied by several photos. Clothes scattered carelessly, two people holding each other tightly, messy bedsheets, and a hazy reflection in a fogged–up mirror… Aveline had seen this kind of thing before. It wasn’t new to her.
One glance at the big hand holding that woman’s wrist, and Aveline knew it was Jaxson’s.
Her Mate. The same man she’d been mated to for four years.
Then her eyes caught the date on the pictures, and her stomach sank. It was the same day as their mating anniversary.
Jaxson had promised they’d spend the evening together, but he’d vanished for three days.
All she got was a message from his beta, saying he had some urgent pack issues to handle.
“Urgent, huh?” Aveline let out a cold chuckle.
Clearly urgent–in someone else’s bed. She closed the message and called someone from her contact list.
The person picked up almost immediately.
“Aveline,” came the voice on the other end.
“I’ve decided to join the Bloodmoon Research Facility.” Her tone was calm, collected.
A heavy silence stretched on the other end of the line, then came a sharp, unwavering voice. “Don’t joke around, Aveline. You know what this means! Once you’re in the classified research project, there’s no turning back. No outside contact, no personal ties. You’ll be officially listed as missing, and everything about your past will be wiped clean. A new identity will be created for you. So ask yourself–are you really ready to walk away from your family and pack? From Alpha Jaxson?”
Aveline’s gaze drifted to the framed photo on the nightstand. The smile that once brought her warmth now only twisted the knife deeper in her chest.
At the same time, her wolf huffed dismissively in the back of her mind–Avéline knew the beast had never approved of the mate she’d chosen. Hell,
her wolf had despised him from the start.
Turned out, her wolf had been right all along.
“I’ve made my decision,” she said quietly. “I’ll come by tomorrow to fill out the forms.”
She ended the call before the person on the other end could say anything else. She didn’t want to hear more. Any hesitation now would be pointless.
At that moment, a car pulled up outside.
Moments later, Jaxson Thorne walked in, tall as ever, loosening his black tie while heading straight for the bathroom.
His jacket, tossed lazily on the hook, still carried the suggestive scent of Eau d’Ombré Leather, the latest women’s perfume from the brand Tom Ford.
Bold, seductive–everything she apparently wasn’t.
A few minutes later, Jaxson emerged wearing a gray bathrobe that hung loosely on his frame, exposing his solid chest and abs. His damp hair fell around his face, and the moisture made him look even more rugged and sharp.
As Alpha of the expansive Thornpeak Pack, Jaxson possessed the commanding physique and dominant presence typical of an Alpha wolf.
Once, she’d been drawn to all of that. Now, it only made her sick.

Her wolf rumbled in agreement deep within.
“What’s with that look?” Jaxson chuckled, sliding an arm around her waist, his voice low and teasing. “Miss me, babe?”
His hand slid down her side, but his touch made her skin crawl.
She stepped back quickly, pulling away from his grasp.
Jaxson’s hand stopped mid–motion, his eyebrows knitting together. “What’s going on? Are you mad at me?”
Aveline took a breath, steadying herself. She wasn’t going to waste energy on another fight. Pushing down the ache in her heart, she leaned over and picked up a locked box from the drawer, handing it to him.
“Here. A gift.”
Inside? The rejection papers she’d already signed.
