Chapter 10

He bit down on her neckthen froze. The mark on Aveline’s throat had faded

The scent of another woman’s perfume clung to him, and Aveline’s skin crawled with disgust

She struggled harder, but Jaxson’s wolf seemed to have lost all control

His movements were harsh and forceful, teeth sinking harder into the skin of her neck where his mark should’ve been

Then he gripped her chin and bit her lips roughly. Did that man kiss you? Touch you? Aveline, you’re mine. If you ever let someone else put a hand on you, I swear, I’ll make you regret it.”

The sharp clink of a belt buckle being unfastened rang in her ears like a siren

She didn’t hesitateher knee shot up hard, slamming directly between his legs

Jaxson let out a low, pained groan as his body gave out, folding onto the carpet. He clung to her with one trembling hand, refusing to let go. His breath came in sharp, uneven bursts, and beads of cold sweat slid down the sides of his face, soaking into his hairline

Aveline yanked a tissue from her bag and scrubbed her lips with disgust. Her gaze burned down at him. Didn’t you say nothing happened with your precious friend? Then why are you acting guilty? What exactly are you so afraid of?”

The veins in his forehead pulsed violently, like they were about to burst. For a split second, the hairs on the back of his neck stood on end, claws beginning to push through his fingertipshe looked like he was about to lose it completely

But then, the coat she had been holding slipped from her grasp, landing in front of him with the tag still danglingbrand new, untouched

Jaxson froze. Then, to her surprise, a dark laugh rolled from his throat. He got up slowly and slid his arms around her waist like she was already his again. Aveline, this is all an act to make me jealous, right? You bought a new coat and pretended it was some other man’s. I know you too wellyou can’t stay mad at me for long.”

He buried his face against her waist, nuzzling her like a child seeking forgiveness, his domineering edge melting into tender pleading. Don’t pull something like this again, okay? You’re everything to me. If I lost you, I’d lose my mind.”

His voice trembled with emotionobsessive, desperate, and, for a brief moment, it stirred something deep in Aveline’s heart..

During the first two years they were together, all they had ever shared were gentle kisses and warm, lingering hugs

Whenever things grew intense, Jaxson would simply hold her like thispressing close, murmuring in a raspy voice how he couldn’t survive without her. Back then, Aveline had truly believed that what they had would never break. That it was real. Unshakable

After a long stretch of silence with no reply from her, Jaxson finally lifted his gaze. His eyes, faintly reddened, held a touch of quiet hurt

Avelineplease don’t stay mad at me, alright? There’s nothing between me and her. My heart, my bodyit’s always been yours. Only yours.”

He gently took her hand and placed it over his chest, looking at her with heartfelt intensity. I made a vow to the Moon Goddess. I will never break it

Never.”

Aveline didn’t withdraw her hand. Her fingers rested over his chest, where his heartbeat pounded steadily beneath her palm

Her voice, however, was icecold. Do you remember the consequences of breaking that vow?”

The moment she said it, the chest beneath her hand tensed instantly

She watched panic flicker in his eyes as she recited it slowly, word for word. If you break this vow, Jaxsonmay you be cursed with infertility, die a painful and untimely death, lose everything and everyone you love, and be left in ruin and despair.”

Jaxson couldn’t hold her gaze anymore. He turned away, sat up beside her, and muttered while holding her hand, If it means you’ll stop being angry

I’ll agree to whatever you say.”

And just like that, Aveline felt a bitter emptiness settle in. What was the point of all this

A man who could lie without blinking wasn’t going to be shaken by a curse, not even one that damned his soul

She calmly pulled her hand away. You’ve been busy latelyI get it. I believe you. No more fights. Didn’t you say Iceland? Let’s go next weekend.”

Jaxson exhaled in visible relief, drawing her into his embrace and pressing a kiss to the crown of her head. Next weekend, then. I’ll plan everything.”

With her soft figure in his arms and that familiar scent clouding his senses, he knew this was only a temporary peace

Remembering how faded his mark on her neck had become, something dark flickered in his eyes. He had to find a way to make her truly his again

Aveline buried her revulsion deep down, her eyes turning to frost

Next weekend, Jaxson would finally receive the surpriseshe’d been preparing for him

Night had fallen, and the sky was heavy with dark clouds, hinting at an approaching storm

Jaxson walked out of the bathroom, a towel loosely tied around his waist, steam still clinging to his skin. His toned body was fully on display

He climbed into bed and leaned in close, resting against Aveline’s neck. Glancing at the book she was holding, he murmured, Aveline, a friend of mine brought back a box of ultrathin condoms from Raskait. Want to give them a try tonight?”

Chapter 1 – The Last Betrayal

Aveline Russell’s phone lit up with a message.
Photos followed — clothes strewn on the floor, two figures tangled together, a fogged-up mirror capturing their blurred reflections.

One glance at the man’s hand on that woman’s wrist, and Aveline knew.
Jaxson Thorne.
Her mate.
The man she had been bound to for four years.

Then she saw the timestamp.
Their mating anniversary.
The same night he had promised to be with her — then vanished for three days, leaving only his beta’s excuse about “urgent pack business.”

“Urgent,” she muttered bitterly. “Sure. Urgent enough to forget me.”

She closed the message, steadied her shaking breath, and made a call.

Leaving It All Behind

The voice that answered hesitated when she spoke.
“I’m joining the Bloodmoon Research Facility.

Silence, then a firm warning:

“Once you enter that project, there’s no return. Your name will be erased. You’ll be declared missing. You’ll lose every tie — even Alpha Jaxson.”

Aveline’s eyes flicked to a framed photo on the nightstand.
His smile, once her comfort, now mocked her.
Deep inside, her wolf gave a low growl — the same instinct that had always disliked him, always known he wasn’t right.

“I’ve made my decision,” she said quietly.
She ended the call before she could change her mind.

The Scent of Lies

Moments later, a car engine rumbled outside.
Jaxson stepped in — tall, broad-shouldered, effortlessly confident. He loosened his tie, tossed his jacket on a hook, and walked straight to the shower.

The air filled with the heady scent of women’s perfume — bold and unfamiliar. Not hers.
He reappeared minutes later, damp hair tousled, wrapped in a gray robe that revealed his strong build. Once, she’d admired that sight.
Now it only made her stomach twist.

Her wolf rumbled its agreement deep within. The bond was poison.

A Gift for Goodbye

“What’s with that look?” Jaxson teased, sliding an arm around her waist. “Miss me, babe?”

She flinched away from his touch.
He frowned. “What’s wrong? Are you mad?”

Aveline didn’t answer. She had cried too many times to waste more words.
Instead, she opened a drawer, took out a small locked box, and held it out to him.

“Here,” she said softly. “A gift.”

He took it, unaware of what it held.
Inside were the rejection papers — already signed, sealed, and ready to break the bond that had once chained her heart.

For Aveline Russell, the chapter was closing.
The woman who loved him was gone.
The one who would rise from her ashes belonged to no one.
