Wanting to stock up on essentials, she changed clothes and headed to the mall. But as she came down the escalator with her shopping bags, she caught sight of a scene that stopped her in her tracks

There stood Morgana Thornethe notoriously picky former Luna of the Thornpeak Packsmiling warmly and clinging to that Lirael woman’s arm like they were old friends

The affection on Morgana’s face was a stab to the gut

And next to them was Jaxson, the same man who’d disappeared for days, carefully slipping a glittering diamond bracelet onto Lirael’s wrist with all the tenderness he used to reserve for her

They looked completelike a pictureperfect family. One that didn’t include her

When Lirael nodded with delight, Morgana praised her taste with a sparkle in her eye and casually handed over a black card for payment. But to Aveline, the moment was soaked in bitter irony

That black card belonged to her. It was hermoney being spent

She had earned those privilegesdeep discounts, first picks from new collectionsall because of her close friendship with the brand’s director

What was meant as a thoughtful gesture to bring her and Morgana closer was now being used to flatter Jaxson’s mistress

Without hesitation, Aveline marched up to the counter, yanked the card from the stunned saleswoman’s hand, and said calmly, Sorry. This card’s no longer valid.”

The employee blinked in confusion. Ma’am, that’s a premium card. It doesn’t expire, and it can’t be canceled”

Oh, really?Aveline broke the card clean in half and tossed it into the nearby trash without blinking. It’s canceled now.”

Morgana’s fury exploded. She slapped Aveline hard across the cheek and hissed, What’s gotten into you? Do you even realize how disgraceful you’re being?”

The Thorne family, ruling pack of Thornpeak, held an impeccable reputation across Texasand Jaxson, the current alpha, had always been praised as a financial prodigy

From the very beginning, when Aveline and Jaxson had only just started dating, Morgana had treated her with indifference

She had always believed Aveline was nothing more than a packless rogueunworthy of Jaxson

And after the wedding, that coldness only grew. No matter how hard Aveline tried to earn her approval, a warm smile never came

She had always kept quiet, not wanting to put Jaxson in a tough spot

But that patiencebuilt on lovehad finally run dry

She had no reason to tolerate it anymore

Then, suddenly, two crisp slaps rang out, landing squarely on Jaxson’s face

Aveline used every ounce of her strength. Her hand trembled uncontrollably afterward

The wolf inside her stirred awake, releasing an exhilarated howl

Well done. He doesn’t deserve us.”

The noise silenced everyone around them

Jaxson Thorneruling alpha of the Thornpeak Pack, the man hailed in financial circles like a legendnow stood, redcheeked, slapped in broad daylight

Aveline!Morgana shouted, livid. She rolled up her sleeves as if ready to storm forward and retaliate

Aveline lifted her chin. Touch me and see what happens.”

You! YouMorgana was so furious she clutched her chest for breath. Jaxson! Look at her! How can you let her act like such a shrew?”

Aveline turned toward Jaxson with a cold smirk. Tell me, Jaxsondidn’t I have every reason to slap you?”

Jaxson’s expression hardened, his jaw clenched. He stepped forward and seized her wrist, muttering under his breath, Aveline, that’s enough. Just calm down. You’re making a scene.”

Suddenly, Lirael rushed into Jaxson’s arms, dragging his hand to her waist and whining in Spanish about Aveline’s outrageous behavior

Her body pressed tightly against his, calling him querido* over and over, as if trying to melt into his skin

Jaxson murmured sof

reassurances in Spanish, speaking to her gently

The sight of them, so close and cozy, made Aveline laugh in disbelief

Then, out of nowhere, Avelin

spokeher Spanish fluent, her tone sharp

to be someone’s mistress, at least have the decency not to play the innocent. You’re sleeping with another woman’s even think about denying it. If Spanish’s not working for you, we can switch. I speak sixteen languages. You pick one, I lose the argument, I’ll admit defeat.”

and I’ll keep up. If

Lirael’s face turned a deep red

She had clearly never imagined Aveline could speak Spanish so perfectly. Hadn’t Jaxson said his mate was just some regular office employee

Jaxson’s face darkened, his tone rigid. Avelinewhen did you learn Spanish?”

The moment hit her like a knife twisting deeper into an open wound

Her lips curled into a bitter smile

Ah, Jaxson, you must really love me, huh?The sarcasm in her voice was razorsharp. “Go on, enjoy your little shopping spree. I won’t get in your

way.”

And with that, she turned on her heel and walked away

Jaxson quickly moved to follow, but Morgana and Lirael each latched onto one of his arms, stopping him

Jaxson, break the bond with that rogue already! How dare she lay a hand on you?Morgana snapped

She had said those exact words countless times before, and Jaxson had always ignored them. But for some reason, this time, they felt different. They got under his skin

That’s between me and her,he muttered, shaking them off and hurrying after Aveline

Luckily, he managed to catch her just as she reached her car

Chapter 1 – The Last Betrayal

Aveline Russell’s phone lit up with a message.
Photos followed — clothes strewn on the floor, two figures tangled together, a fogged-up mirror capturing their blurred reflections.

One glance at the man’s hand on that woman’s wrist, and Aveline knew.
Jaxson Thorne.
Her mate.
The man she had been bound to for four years.

Then she saw the timestamp.
Their mating anniversary.
The same night he had promised to be with her — then vanished for three days, leaving only his beta’s excuse about “urgent pack business.”

“Urgent,” she muttered bitterly. “Sure. Urgent enough to forget me.”

She closed the message, steadied her shaking breath, and made a call.

Leaving It All Behind

The voice that answered hesitated when she spoke.
“I’m joining the Bloodmoon Research Facility.

Silence, then a firm warning:

“Once you enter that project, there’s no return. Your name will be erased. You’ll be declared missing. You’ll lose every tie — even Alpha Jaxson.”

Aveline’s eyes flicked to a framed photo on the nightstand.
His smile, once her comfort, now mocked her.
Deep inside, her wolf gave a low growl — the same instinct that had always disliked him, always known he wasn’t right.

“I’ve made my decision,” she said quietly.
She ended the call before she could change her mind.

The Scent of Lies

Moments later, a car engine rumbled outside.
Jaxson stepped in — tall, broad-shouldered, effortlessly confident. He loosened his tie, tossed his jacket on a hook, and walked straight to the shower.

The air filled with the heady scent of women’s perfume — bold and unfamiliar. Not hers.
He reappeared minutes later, damp hair tousled, wrapped in a gray robe that revealed his strong build. Once, she’d admired that sight.
Now it only made her stomach twist.

Her wolf rumbled its agreement deep within. The bond was poison.

A Gift for Goodbye

“What’s with that look?” Jaxson teased, sliding an arm around her waist. “Miss me, babe?”

She flinched away from his touch.
He frowned. “What’s wrong? Are you mad?”

Aveline didn’t answer. She had cried too many times to waste more words.
Instead, she opened a drawer, took out a small locked box, and held it out to him.

“Here,” she said softly. “A gift.”

He took it, unaware of what it held.
Inside were the rejection papers — already signed, sealed, and ready to break the bond that had once chained her heart.

For Aveline Russell, the chapter was closing.
The woman who loved him was gone.
The one who would rise from her ashes belonged to no one.
