Chapter 7
Her fingers lightly brushed his chest. Her eyes sparkled, playful and seductive. “Trust me, we’d enjoy ourselves.”
She sat up and swayed slightly, tempting like a flame dancing in the dark, teasing him.
She could feel herself losing control, letting her wolf take over.
But the man just stared at her with an unreadable expression, not even slightly tempted. It made her feel ridiculous, like she was performing alone on
a stage. Whatever heat had been building inside her vanished in an instant.
What if he already had a mate? Was she really about to become another Lirael?
The thought made her sick.
A bitter smile curved her lips. She let her head rest lightly against his chest, trying to pull herself together.
Because of Jaxson, she had nearly turned into the very kind of woman she couldn’t stand.
“Sorry… I drank too much,” she murmured, retreating into her seat. She curled up in the corner and finished another glass in a single gulp.
She tried to drown the relentless heat surging through her body with alcohol. Her wolf clawed at her frantically from within, wrestling for control of her body. If she had even a shred less willpower, she would’ve thrown herself at him right then and there.
Thank the Moon Goddess, the man finally stood and left.
She finally moved, her skin burning hot. Eventually, as the desire faded, she managed to force her wolf back down. Then, stumbling and swaying, she disappeared into the night.
The next day, after sleeping off the hangover, she replayed last night’s loss of control in her mind and one impossible thought crept in.
But then she shook her head with a bitter smirk. That couldn’t be. Right?
–
The entire night, Jaxson didn’t come home.
Aveline accepted it without protest.
Then she went straight to the research center.
Even though her participation had already been approved, she still needed to complete some paperwork.
Maren, who was sorting project files nearby, suddenly looked up with a cheeky grin on her face.
“Hey Aveline, did you hear? This project’s getting serious attention from the higher–ups. There’s a VIP joining us–super rich, from a seriously prestigious bloodline, and he’s “single“. You’re not even a little curious?”
“Why would I be?” Aveline replied flatly, still looking at her research notes, not the least bit interested.
Bloodmoon Research Facility had an impeccable reputation. It was a popular stop for heirs of noble packs looking to “experience the grassroots” and polish their public image. She just shrugged.
“But thus guy’s on another level,” Maren said, leaning over Aveline’s desk. “Come on, with your looks and charm? You could have any male wolf eating out of your hand. Think about it–once the research kicks off, your personal info goes dark. Your mating bond with Jaxson? Wiped clean from the system, like it never even existed. Now imagine this: next Moon Gathering, you walk in side by side with “him“-and Jaxson gets a front–row seat to everything he lost. Tell me that wouldn’t feel amazing“.”

Aveline finally looked up. “That’s petty. Jaxson will lose much more than that.”
Just then, there was a knock at the door.

It was an administrative coordinator, letting them know it was time to head to the meeting room and meet the rest of the project team.
“Do you
think the VIP’s here already?” Maren said excitedly, grabbing Aveline and rushing toward the meeting room.
“Wait, I haven’t even packed my stuff,” Aveline said, holding her folder close as she tried to keep up. When they got there, she quietly took a seat in a corner and focused on her files.
She didn’t look up until a round of applause echoed through the room.
Then a familiar scent hit her like a wave.
She slowly raised her head–and locked eyes with a man whose gaze burned with intensity and power.
Her heart seized in her chest. “How could it be him?*
In an instant, her wolf surged out of control again–and let out a whimper she’d never heard before.
“MINE!”
