Chapter 13

Chapter 13

Nathan scoffed. “What, you think I’m the incompetent one? You own twenty-five percent of our company shares. Bottom line-you’re

a shareholder. You can’t work for Marcus!”

“I sold them.”

I looked up at him, voice calm.

“Those twenty-five percent shares-I sold them to someone else.”

“What did you just say? Jade! Are you insane? What gives you the right to sell the shares I gave you?”

“What gives me the right? The fact that your company is where it is today because half of it is my work. Those shares were what I earned. I can sell them if I want-it’s none of your business!”

“You…”

Nathan was furious, raising his hand as if to strike me.

His palm hung suspended in the air but never came down.

“What? You want to hit me again? Just like you let Isabella hit me, right?”

He pressed his lips together, clenched his hand into a fist, and forcibly swallowed his rage.

“Jade, don’t come crying to me later. When Marcus sees your true abilities and throws you out, when you’re homeless on the streets, don’t come looking for me!”

“GET OUT!”

I couldn’t stand another word from him, shoving him hard toward the door. “Nathan, get the hell out! I never want to see you again! I’d rather sell things on the street, wait tables-anything-before I’d take another ounce of help from you!”

My push sent him staggering backward into the puddles.

“Fine.” Nathan nodded, looking up at me. “I’ll make you a bet.”

“What kind of bet?”

“I bet you’ll come crawling back eventually.” His eyes were ice-cold, filled with raw anger. “When you crash and burn at Marcus’s place, when you realize no one knows how to use your talents like I do, you’ll get on your knees and beg me to take you back.”

“You’re beyond hope.”

Looking at his familiar yet strange face, I suddenly felt like even anger was pointless.

“Don’t worry. I, Jade Rivers, swear that day will never come!”

SLAM.

I slammed the door shut with all my strength.

Outside, only the sound of heavy rain remained. Nothing else.

Chapter 19

After what felt like forever, I heard a car engine starting up outside.

Only when the car sounds completely faded did 1 slide down against the door to the floor.

Why did even our breakup have to be so ugly?

Why, when we’d once loved each other so much, had things become like this?

I buried my head in my knees, biting my lip hard to keep from making a sound.

I’d told myself I wouldn’t cry over him anymore. So why couldn’t I stop the tears?
