Chapter 14
Chapter 14
First thing the next morning. I went to Marcus’s company.
I’d barely sat down at my new desk when I heard whispers throughout the building.
That’s her? I heard Nathan Pierce dumped her, so she came crawling to our company.”
“Is that true? What’s she even doing here? Probably trying to seduce Mr. Stone.”
“Who knows? Mr. Stone’s always been super picky about secretaries. All these years, no secretary has satisfied him. I don’t believe this woman will be any different!”
I ignored the gossip and flipped through the files, trying to quickly familiarize myself with Marcus’s recent schedule.
“I heard Nathan didn’t come to work today.”
A cold masculine voice spoke above my head. “Apparently he got caught in the rain all night and came down with a fever.”
“Oh.”
I didn’t look up, pointing at the schedule in my hands. “There’s a charity auction tonight, right? Do you need me to arrange a date for
you?”
Seeing my reaction, Marcus’s smile deepened.
“You’re not prepared. Don’t you know that as my secretary, you’re required to accompany me to any public events?”
“Oh, right. I assumed Mr. Stone would bring his girlfriend.”
The moment I finished speaking, his face was suddenly inches from mine.
“What if I told you I don’t have a girlfriend?”
Looking at his face so close to mine, my cheeks immediately burned hot.
I had to admit, Marcus was incredibly good looking.
Even more so than Nathan
Deep-set eyes, a sharp nose, thun red lips.
I was curious how such an outstanding man could be single.
“That means Mr. Stone has high standards”
“Your face is very red. He smiled, reaching out to touch me, but I dodged away. “I’ll be ready to accompany you tonight, don’t worry.”
“Good Make me some coffee and bring it to my office in a bit
“Sure.”
Watching him enter his office, I finally relaxed

1 touched my cheek-it was still burning hot.
Damn it, had I just been seduced by him?
The charity auction ballroom glittered with lights as celebrities and elites mingled throughout the hall
Walking in on Marcus’s arm. I was shocked to see Nathan.
He and Isabella stood not far away, chatting with others.
Seeing him, my body involuntarily tensed up.
“Don’t panic.”
Marcus looked down at me, his voice gentle: “You have nothing to do with him anymore. Even if you see him, don’t be afraid. I’m
here.”
“Doesn’t Mr. Stone have a date? He’ll bring just anyone to this kind of event.”
Nathan approached with a cold laugh, his bloodshot eyes fixed on my hand linked through Marcus’s arm.
Isabella beside him looked at me with undisguised disgust.
She spoke with a smile, her voice sharp and grating: “Nathan, how can you talk like that? Secretary Rivers works for Mr. Stone now-she’s probably become his right-hand woman!”
Right-hand woman?” Nathan laughed mockingly, turning his gaze to Marcus, his tone suddenly razor-sharp. “Mr. Stone should keep his eyes open. Just because someone thrived at my company doesn’t mean she has real ability. You really think her jumping ship to your company will bring you value?”
He stepped forward, looking down at me condescendingly: “Jade, you don’t actually think you’re that capable, do you? What do you
ave without Pierce Holdings? This kind of place isn’t somewhere a mere secretary belongs-”
