“That’s quite an eye opening statement, Mr. Pierce.” Marcus suddenly stepped forward, subtly positioning himself between Nathan and me. “Before judging others, shouldn’t you consider how much of your own success came from riding someone else’s coattails?”
Nathan’s face darkened: “Marcus, what are you implying?”
“Nothing much.”
Marcus smiled, speaking each word deliberately: “I’m just reminding you that Pierce Holdings went from nobody to what it is today in just five years-entirely thanks to Jade Rivers.”
Nathan scoffed. “Ridiculous. She’s just a woman…”
“Pierce Holdings’ flagship malls-from land acquisition to planning to tenant recruitment-wasn’t all that Jade’s work? Several projects I was determined to win were snatched from under my nose by Jade and her team. Without her, would Pierce Holdings be where it is today? Now that you’re riding high in this industry, you think you can erase everything Jade did for you? For a man to be this shameless-that’s beyond even my expectations.”
Looking at Marcus’s protective stance, my eyes began to sting.
I hadn’t expected that Marcus knew about everything I’d done over the years.
“I’m just offering friendly advice. I hope you won’t regret this, Mr. Stone.”
Nathan stared at me, his voice heavy: “And you, Jade-you’ll regret leaving me! If you’re willing to come back now, I might still forgive you…”
I ignored him, linking my arm through Marcus’s as we headed toward the auction hall. “Let’s go. The auction’s about to start.”
The moment we left, Nathan lost his temper, smashing his champagne glass against the floor.
Glass shards scattered everywhere, startling everyone around.
Including Isabella.
“Nathan, are you okay?”
Nathan’s face was livid as he stared at my retreating figure for a long moment. “Did you see that? Jade actually came to this kind of event with Marcus. She really did go to his company!”
“Yes, but you already knew that, didn’t you?”
Isabella bit her lip, her fists clenching at her sides.
These past few days, Nathan had been like a man possessed-everything was about me,
