Chapter 1
The year Dad’s company went bankrupt, I got sent to work for the richest heir in Manhattan.
Ethan Blackwood was three years older than me, horn with a golden spoon in his mouth, and ridiculously handsome in that
annoyingly perfect way.
At first, I was just his companion-playing video games with him, skipping classes together, watching midnight movies in his private
theater.
Later, I became his personal assistant and bed partner. Against the floor to ceiling windows in his office, in his private jet’s bathroom, on his yacht’s deck-we were reckless day and night.
Until that day when I saw a flight notification on his phone about his first love returning from abroad. That night, he was like he wanted to melt me beneath him, demanding me ten times straight.
In that moment, I understood-it was time for me to step aside.
“Sweetheart, Victoria’s coming back today.”
Ethan breathed against my ear, still holding me tight from behind, his chin resting on my shoulder, his breath still heavy with post-passion heat. “I still can’t get her out of my mind.”
I kept putting on my dress with steady hands, not even a tremor, though my heart was breaking. “I know. I’ll pack my things later and delete my fingerprint from the door.”
He chuckled softly, his lips brushing my ear with that familiar intimacy we’d shared after every encounter. “I love how understanding you are, how you always know your place.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of your dad’s company. Let’s start with a ten million investment, how’s that?”
I tugged at my lips. “Thanks.”
“Why are we being so formal?” He kissed my earlobe, his voice sticky sweet like he was acting spoiled. “You grew up with me, baby girl. I can’t live without you, no matter what.”
“We’re just ending the bed partners. You’re still my secretary, and I’ll protect your family forever.”
“No need,” I said, tying the belt on my dress and turning to face him. “I’ve decided to resign-”
Before I could finish, his phone rang.
“Ethan! Your first love is back! We’re throwing a welcome party at Nightfall-you coming?” His friend’s excited voice carried through the speaker.
Ethan’s eyes lit up immediately as he stood up. “I’ll be right there.”
After hanging up, he hurriedly threw on his jacket and pecked my lips. “Sweetheart, take care of things here. You’re the only one I
trust.”
I hummed in response.

Chapter 1
The moment the door closed. I stood there staring at the messy sheets, still marked with traces of our intimacy.
Then I mechanically stripped the bed, threw everything in the washer, picked up scattered clothes one by one, and finally packed my belongings.
Clothes, toiletries, and a few books I often read….
Three years of living here, but everything I was taking fit into one small suitcase.
As I was deleting my fingerprint from the lock, Dad called.
“Claire!” His voice trembled with excitement. “How did you manage to convince Ethan this time? He actually invested ten million in
“This is the last time,” I said, standing at the mansion’s entrance, my voice calm. “He won’t be investing in you anymore.”
Silence on the other end, then Dad’s voice, thick with suppressed anger: “What do you mean?!”
Then, as if realizing something, he quickly said: “I get it, you heard about Ethan’s first love coming back, right? Don’t panic! You’ve been by his side for so many years-he can’t live without you! So what if his first love is back? You can still be his secretary and keep getting benefits!”
1 forgot to tell you,” I interrupted him. “I’m planning to leave.”
You dare!” he exploded. “Don’t forget about your mother-”
laughed, my voice dripping with sarcasm. “Did you forget? Mom died a week ago.”
You threatened me with Mom for twelve years. Now, you can’t threaten me anymore.”
I have to leave Ethan. I’m done with this life!”
You better not come looking for me, or else… I can make you pay back all the money from these years.”
After saying that, I hung up, quickly blocked all of Dad’s contacts, called an Uber, and headed back to my apartment.
The neon lights outside blurred past the window as I closed my eyes wearily, my mind drifting back to when I was fifteen.
Jad’s company was going bankrupt, and he used Mom’s medical bills to force me to get close to Ethan Blackwood.
That golden boy of New York, the only heir to the Sterling fortune.
io I staged a “damsel in distress” act and became his companion.
Suring countless days growing up together, he would pull me under his umbrella on rainy days, his hair dripping wet as he called ne “sweetheart”; he’d curl up on my lap when he failed his exams, acting all pitiful; and whenever Dad’s company had cash flow problems, he’d casually say, “How much do you need? I’ll have my dad wire it over.”
Then later he grew up and had his first crush-Victoria Hayes.
He asked me anxiously: “Do you think if I confess and get rejected, we won’t even be friends anymore?”
That’s when I knew:
He was truly head over heels for her.

This “help” tasted three years.

This calculated prostitution tortured me every single day.
Tow that Mom was gone, despite the pain, I felt a strange sense of relief.
urns out Mom’s final love gift to me was the freedom to finally be myself without any strings attached.
o the next day, the first thing I did at the office was file my resignation.
My coworker from HR stared at me in shock: “Claire, you’re quitting?! Does Mr. Blackwood know?”
smiled. “Isn’t resigning pretty normal?”
But… Mr. Blackwood can’t live without you!”
Nobody’s indispensable.” I pushed the resignation form across the desk. “Just get him to approve it.”
efore closing time, HR called me over nervously: “Mr. Blackwood already approved it…”
lar then hesitated. “But it seems like he didn’t notice it was you resigning. Should I tell him?”
