Chapter 7
Chapter 7
I looked up at him: “What if I don’t want to?”
Ethan’s voice was low and serious: “Sweetheart, I’m not asking you. I’m your boss.”
I stared at him for several seconds, then suddenly smiled: “Fine.”
I took the glass and downed it in one gulp. The harsh alcohol burned my throat as the allergic reaction immediately kicked in.
When the cops arrived, I was “drunk” and confessed to being the one who hit the pedestrian.
The 48 hours at the police station were like a nightmare.
I don’t know if it was Victoria’s arrangement, but I got thrown into a mixed holding cell.
“Fresh meat?” A tattooed thug sauntered over. “Look at this pretty little thing.”
He suddenly grabbed my hair and slammed my head against the wall!
“Heard you got some nerve? Think you can mess with Ms. Blackwood’s woman?”
I fought back desperately, but several guys pinned me down and beat the shit out of me.
“Fucking bitch!”
“You think you can compete with Ms. Hayes?”
Pain exploded through my entire body, but I bit down hard on my lip to keep from screaming.
All the bruises were hidden under my clothes where no one could see them.
On the third morning, Ethan finally showed up.
“Sweetheart,” he frowned at my pale complexion, “you look awful. What’s wrong?”
I’d wanted to tell him what I’d endured for the past 48 hours, but then I remembered I was leaving today. What was the point?
“Did you not sleep well in here? I’m sorry you had to go through this.” He reached out to touch my face, but I instinctively pulled away
His hand froze in midair, his tone softening: “I could have gotten you out sooner, but Victoria had a fever…”
Just because Victoria had a fever.
He let me rot in this place for two days, getting beaten the entire time?
I laughed bitterly to myself, said nothing, and brushed past his shoulder to leave.
Ethan hurried after me and pulled me into his car.
“Want me to take you home to rest?”
“The office.”

Chapter 7
“You’re going to work right now?” He frowned. “Let’s go home first.”
I have something important to handle.”
My tone was calm but left no room for argument.
Ethan remembered how I used to be the same way-insisting on finishing merger deals even when running a high fever.
When we got to the office building, I unbuckled my seatbelt and was about to get out when Ethan suddenly spoke: “Want me to come
up with you?”
“No.”
I pushed open the car door as cold air rushed in, stripping away the last bit of warmth from my body.
That’s when Ethan’s phone rang.
I heard Victoria’s voice through the speaker. “Ethan… my stomach hurts… can you come keep me company?”
Ethan’s frown deepened as he looked up at me.
“Go,” I told him with my usual understanding tone. T11 head home after I finish up here.”
Ethan stared at me for several seconds, then finally sighed. T’m sorry you had to go through all this.”
He reached out to touch my face, but I subtly avoided him again.
Before the car window rolled up, he said: “Once I get Victoria feeling better. I’ll make this up to you properly.”
I stood there watching that black Maserati disappear into traffic.
Then I walked into the office and finalized my resignation paperwork, saying goodbye to each of my coworkers.
After that I went home, grabbed my luggage, and headed to the airport.
Before boarding, I deleted all of Ethan’s contact information and threw my SIM card in the trash.
As the plane climbed into the sky, I slowly closed my eyes.
I spent twelve years with you, Ethan Blackwood.
This time, I can finally say goodbye.
