Ethan stared at his phone screen, his brow furrowed deeply.
He couldn’t understand why Claire had blocked him!
Was it because of making her take the fall for Victoria’s accident?
But hadn’t he sent over all that expensive jewelry to apologize?
Maybe she didn’t like what he’d chosen?
An unprecedented panic began rising from deep within him.
In his memory, Claire had been by his side for twelve years, always understanding, always knowing her place, never throwing
childish tantrums like this.
‘Mr. Blackwood, here’s some water.” A server carefully handed him a steaming cup.
Ethan snapped back to reality, taking the cup and passing it to Victoria: “Drink this, it’ll help.”
Victoria accepted the cup and sipped it slowly, her face still pale: “Ethan, will you take me home?”
Victoria, I have something very important to handle,” Ethan refused her for the first time. “Stay at the hotel and rest. The driver will ake you home when you’re feeling better.”
Victoria was startled by his serious expression, thinking something major had happened at the company. She didn’t dare cling to him: Then… go take care of business.”
Ethan leaned down and kissed her forehead gently: “I’ll come home to you once I’m done.”
Leaving the banquet hall, Ethan practically ran to the parking garage.
He jumped in his car and floored it, the black Maserati shooting forward like a bullet.
Twenty minutes later, he slammed on the brakes outside Claire’s apartment building.
Ethan took the stairs three at a time, standing before the familiar door and raising his hand to knock.
Sweetheart?”
‘Claire?”
‘Claire Morrison!”
No answer.
The motion-sensor lights in the hallway turned on at the sound of his voice, then quickly dimmed again.
In the darkness, he stared at that closed door, feeling like something was crushing his chest, making it hard to breathe.
Why wasn’t she answering his calls?
Why had she blocked him?

Why wouldn’t she even open the door?
Suddenly the door next to Claire’s opened, and a young man poked his head out, frowning: “What’s all this noise in the middle of the
night?”
Ethan gave him an icy stare that immediately made the guy back down.
“I’m looking for the person in 1203,” Ethan said, his voice dangerously low, like he was barely keeping something in check.
“12032” The neighbor looked confused. “She moved out ages ago.”
Ethan felt like he’d been struck by lightning.
Moved out?
“When?”
“About… two weeks ago?” The man thought for a moment. “I was heading out that day and saw her leaving with a suitcase.”
Ethan’s pupils contracted slightly.
Two weeks ago-right after he’d made her take the fall for Victoria’s hit-and-run!
He stood there frozen, suddenly feeling completely panicked.
She was gone?
Why did she leave?
Why didn’t she tell him she was moving?
She used to tell him everything!
He spun around and strode toward the elevator, speeding back to the office while running three red lights and nearly hitting a
guardrail.
When he burst into the executive floor, all the employees were startled by his dark expression.
Ethan walked straight to Claire’s desk-it was completely empty except for those jewelry sets he’d sent, still sitting there unopened.
Where is Claire?” Ethan’s voice was cold as ice. “Why are these gifts still sealed? Why isn’t she at her desk today or any other day?”
Everyone exchanged bewildered looks.
Ethan felt like he was about to explode.
Somebody talk!”
The assistants were all terrified, finally stammering: “Claire… Claire resigned… Didn’t you approve her resignation?”
Ethan went completely rigid.
He approved it?
When had he done that?!
