Julian and I went back to the old family house.
Mr. and Mrs. Parker, and Julian’s sister, were kind to me–they even talked about holding a wedding.
They picked a date.
By accident, I overheard Julian talking with his sister.
“Finally got her to say yes, huh?” she teased.
“It’s that kid who didn’t know what he had.”
“So… when are you two having a baby?”
A smile spread across Julian’s face.
“Tell Mom and Dad not to worry. Nellie’s great. She turned out this way because she saved someone. Our kids will be as smart as she was when she was little.”
“You really like her that much?”
Julian nodded.
“I do. She’s simple. Makes me want to take care of her. If I tease her, she cries—like a little bunny.
It’s cute.
You didn’t see her that day, getting called names and crying by her dad’s grave. It was heartbreaking.”
His sister laughed.
“No wonder you prowl the hill out back every year. You finally caught your chance.”
“Cole Lawson didn’t know what he had. His loss.”
People kept saying I wasn’t good enough.
But Julian’s family said Cole didn’t cherish me–like they’d found a treasure.
My eyes stung again.

On the wedding day, I wore a white dress. I looked pretty.
Cole Lawson burst in, shouldering past the guards.
“Nellie’s coming home with me. Our families had the engagement first,” he said.
He looked like he hadn’t slept in forever.
Dark stubble shadowed his jaw.
He was wild, like he’d do anything to reach me.
“He doesn’t love you,” he shouted.
“He’s lying to you.”
“First come, first served–I was first. Nellie, be good. Come home with me.”
Julian wore a black suit and somehow looked even more beautiful.
“You talk about an engagement. Got proof?” he asked.
“Nellie chose me. That makes me her husband.”
Cole’s eyes went red.
“You forced her. Everyone knows I’m the one she loves most.
When we were kids, she almost died for me.
She’s stuck at seven, Julian. Doesn’t that disgust you?!”
Whispers rustled through the guests.
Mr. and Mrs. Parker didn’t look pleased.
I said softly, “He asked me. I said yes.
Thank you for taking care of me all these years, but it’s over, Cole.”
He wouldn’t give up.
He strode onto the stage, grabbed my hand, and tried to pull me away.

“You promised you’d only marry me. I’ll give you a wedding prettier than this. Marry me, okay?”
Julian’s face went cold. “Cole, who’s disgusting here? Don’t make me lay hands on you.”
In the end, Mr. Lawson showed up, ended the scene, and apologized to Mr. and Mrs. Parker.
That night, thunder rolled in and rain came down.
I was alone in our room.
I could tell Julian was angry.
I didn’t dare bother him.
I was afraid he’d hate me.
I curled under the covers, shivering.
When he lifted the blanket, sweat slicked my forehead and neck. I hugged myself tight.
“Don’t come closer… don’t…”
The light clicked on.
Julian stared, alarmed.
“Nellie, what’s wrong?” he said.
