I went back into the room and closed the door behind me, leaning against it for a second like
I needed the pause.
It was a strange kind of restlessness.
Not enough to name.
But enough that sitting still felt wrong.
I had wanted to take a walk around the packhouse, but I needed more than that.
I pushed myself off the door and moved toward the wardrobe, pulling it open without thinking too much about it.
My hand hovered briefly before I grabbed a pair of fitted pants and a simple tank top–nothing dramatic, nothing that required effort.
I changed quickly.
Like I didn’t want to give myself time to overthink it.
Once I was done, I slipped into a pair of boots by the door, then turned toward the mirror. My reflection stared back at me, and for a second, I just looked.
I didn’t look bad.
Just… unfinished.
I ran my fingers through my hair, adjusting it slightly. Nothing elaborate–just enough to tame
it, to make it look intentional instead of like I’d rolled out of bed and decided to exist.
Better.
I grabbed my bag and stepped out into the hallway.
I hadn’t gone too far before I nearly walked straight into Irene.
She stopped in front of me, her eyes dragging slowly from my head down to my shoes, taking everything in with exaggerated attention. Then her lips curved.
“Luna,” she said.
I narrowed my eyes immediately.

There it was.
That tone.
Irene only called me Luna like that when she was about to start something.

I glanced down at myself instinctively, then back at her. “What?” I asked, already suspicious.” Is something wrong with what I’m wearing?”
Her smirk deepened.
I looked down again, suddenly second–guessing everything. “Should I change?” I added quickly. “Or maybe grab a jacket or something-”
“Hell no,” Irene cut in immediately.
I blinked.
She straightened, folding her arms as she gave me another once–over, this time with approval. “You look good,” she said, like she was correcting a crime I had almost committed.
I let out a small breath. “Okay… good,” I muttered, relaxing just a little.
I adjusted the strap of my bag and shrugged lightly. “I just wanted to step out,” I said. “Maybe go to the city library. I’m bored.”
Irene’s brows lifted slightly, like that wasn’t the answer she expected. Then she smiled. “I’ll come with you.”
I shook my head almost immediately. “You don’t have to bother,” I said. “There’s nothing fun to do there. I don’t want you getting cranky halfway through.”
Irene laughed.
“I won’t,” she said, dismissing that with a wave of her hand. “And I’ll drive.”
Of course.
I didn’t have a car anymore since I crashed mine.
Before I could respond, a voice cut in from behind us.
“She can take mine.”
Both Irene and I turned at the same time.
Alexander was walking toward us, already halfway into the hallway like he had been there long enough to catch the conversation.

He stopped in front of us, his gaze landing on me–and lingering just a minute longer than
necessary.
“What?” I asked, immediately aware of it.
His eyes flicked over my outfit again, and that was it.
That was all it took.
Now I was sure something was wrong with the outfit.
“Alright,” I said, already turning slightly. “I should definitely change-”
“No,” he said quickly.
I paused.
He frowned faintly, like he didn’t understand how we got there. “You look fine.”
Fine?
I stared at him for a second, trying to figure out what exactly “fine” meant in his vocabulary, because I was so sure I looked anything but fine.
I decided not to ask.
“I’m going to the library,” I said instead.
He nodded once. “I’ll drive you.”
I blinked.
That-
That was unexpected.
Alexander didn’t usually offer things like that.
And for a second, I just looked at him.
Then I nodded. “Okay. Thank you.”
Irene scoffed immediately. “Or,” she cut in, stepping forward slightly, “you could go back to your office and let me take her. I’m bored, and I want to go out too.”
Alexander raised a brow, like he had been expecting that.
Then, casually, “I think I saw Jeffery heading toward the western wing.”

Irene blinked.
Once.
Twice.
You could practically see her trying to piece together what he meant.
Then I laughed.
And just like that, it clicked for her.
“Oh my goodness,” she muttered, hitting Alexander lightly on the arm. “You’re actually annoying.”
He didn’t even flinch.

Irene rolled her eyes, already turning away. “Whatever,” she said, waving it off as she walked down the hallway. “I’m not doing this with you.”
I watched her go, still smiling faintly, then looked back at Alexander.
“What was that about?” I asked, tilting my head slightly.
His expression shifted–just enough to let something lighter slip through. “I think she needs to be reminded she has her own mate now,” he said, “and should probably focus on him.”
A small laugh slipped out of me before I could stop it.
He huffed something that was almost a laugh too.
And just like that, the air between us felt… easier.
Lighter.
I never get enough of moments like this, when he’s all casual, funny, and relaxed.
He gestured slightly toward our chambers. “Give me a second,” he said. “I’ll grab my wallet and keys.”
I nodded, watching him go, a small smile still lingering on my lips.
ALEXANDER
The door closed quietly behind me as I moved further inside, my gaze drifting briefly across
space before settling on the dresser.

I reached for my wallet, but my mind was still somewhere else entirely–still back in the office, replaying that conversation I had with her.
It hadn’t made sense then.
It made even less sense now.
Faye didn’t dismiss things. Not when it came to Roman.
If anything, she paid too much attention. She asked questions, noticed details, pushed conversations further than most people would bother to. Anything tied to Roman–his health,
his identity–she treated it with a level of care that bordered on instinct.
So when I brought it up earlier, expecting that same focus, and she just…
Brushed it off?
Told me I was probably overthinking?
Then followed it up with something as casual as going for a walk?
No.
That wasn’t her.
There had been something else beneath it.
Something she hadn’t said.
And that was what bothered me.
Faye had a way of doing that–minimizing things when she didn’t want to deal with them yet. Dressing it up in something simple. A walk. Fresh air. Space.
But I knew her well enough to recognize when it wasn’t that simple.
She wasn’t okay.
And whatever this was… it went beyond the mood she had mentioned so casually.
I had tried to let it go.
Told myself she needed space. That not everything required my interference.
I told myself I was just checking on her.
But even then, I knew that wasn’t the full truth.

I had barely made it down the hallway when I heard her voice.
And Irene’s.
Faye was going to the city library.
Bored, she said.
I almost scoffed at that.
Of all the things she could have said, that was what she chose.
Bored.

Irene offered to go with her immediately–predictable. What wasn’t predictable was how quickly Faye tried to turn her down. There was hesitation there. A quiet resistance disguised
as consideration.
That was all I needed.
She didn’t want company.
She wanted distance.
And that confirmed it.
Whatever was going on in her head, I needed to know.
