I saw it happen.

Not up close–not the way the others did, not from the middle of it–but from enough of a distance to see
the whole thing without getting caught in it.
I had been leaning against the far edge, not exactly part of the training, not exactly outside it either. Just…
there. Watching. That had become a habit lately. Watching how things worked. Watching how people
moved. Trying to understand where I fit into it without having to ask.
That was when it happened.
It was subtle at first.
If I hadn’t been paying attention, I might have missed it.
The way Luna Faye stilled.
The way her focus snapped somewhere else–up, not forward, not toward the wolves she had been
correcting a second ago.
Something in her expression changed.
She closed the distance between herself and one of the wolves in a few quick strides and grabbed him- hard enough that even from where I stood, I could tell it wasn’t just a normal correction.
And then she threw him.
There was no other way to describe it.
One second he was standing.
The next, he was hitting the ground with enough force to knock the air out of him, straight into the rack of training weapons behind him.
The sound carried.
That sharp, unmistakable impact of something going wrong.
Everything stopped after that.
I didn’t move immediately.
Not because I didn’t want to–but because I was trying to understand what I had just seen.
It didn’t add up.
None of it did.
Faye didn’t lose control like that. I had been around her enough to know that much. Even when she

That hadn’t been control.

I frowned slightly, pushing myself off the spot I had been leaning against.
The others had already moved in, helping the guy up, checking on him. Voices started overlapping, controlled but concerned.
Faye didn’t stay.

She stepped back once–then turned and walked away.

By the time I got closer, she had already stopped.
She was standing just past the pathway, one hand braced lightly against the low stone edge near the
plants, her shoulders rising and falling slightly.
Like she was trying to steady her breathing.
I slowed my steps as I approached, giving her space before I said anything.
She noticed me anyway.
Of course she did.
Her head turned slightly, just enough to catch me in her peripheral before she fully looked at me.
And just like that, I knew-
She knew I had seen it.
There was a flicker of something in her expression.
Something closer to… embarrassment.
I stopped a few steps away from her.

“I’m fine,” she said before I even asked anything.
That almost made me smile, because it was exactly what someone said when they weren’t fine.
I tilted my head slightly, studying her for a second.
“I didn’t ask,” I said.

I let it sit there for a moment before I added, a little more quietly this time, “What happened?”
She exhaled lightly, shaking her head once like she was brushing it off.
“Nothing,” she said. “It’s handled.”
I didn’t move.
Didn’t push immediately either.
Just watched her.
Because I had seen it.
“You didn’t do that on purpose,” I said.
That got her attention again.
This time, she actually looked at me properly.
I shrugged slightly, keeping my tone easy.
“You had no reason to,” I added. “And you don’t strike me as someone who just… throws people for no
reason.”
She held my gaze for a second.
Like she was trying to decide what to do with that.
Then she looked away.
“It’s nothing,” she repeated.
I exhaled slowly.
“You don’t have to brush me off,” I said. “I’m not-
I paused, adjusting the words slightly.
“I’m not trying to question you.”

She didn’t respond.
So I continued.
“You’d have checked on me if it was the other way around,” I said.
That part was true.
I didn’t need to think about it.
I had seen enough of her to know that.
“And I wouldn’t have liked it if you just walked away like it didn’t matter,” I added.
That landed.
I could tell it did from the way her shoulders shifted slightly..
She let out a breath.
Then she rubbed lightly at her forehead before letting her hand drop.
“It doesn’t make sense,” she said.
Her voice was low.
I stayed where I was, giving her space to say it however she wanted.
“It’s going to sound crazy,” she added, almost like a warning.
I shrugged again.
“I think I’m more qualified than anyone to listen to crazy,” I said.
That earned me the faintest huff of amusement.
Just barely there.
Then she shook her head again, like she still wasn’t sure she should even say it.
“I thought I saw something,” she said finally.
I didn’t interrupt.

“Above him,” she continued, gesturing vaguely with her hand. “A branch. It cracked–I saw it break, and it was coming straight down.”
She let out a short breath, almost like a quiet laugh at herself.
“He didn’t see it,” she added. “So I just… reacted.”
That explained the way she had moved.
Like she was trying to get him out of the way of something immediate.
“But there was nothing there,” she said.

She looked confused.
“I know there wasn’t,” she added quickly. “I saw it after. The branch is still there. Completely fine.”
Then she huffed a small, almost disbelieving laugh under it.

“I actually thought I was saving him,” she said, shaking her head slightly. “I dragged him straight into something worse.”
She paused.
“I must be losing my mind.”
“You’re probably just stressed,” I said.
She turned her head toward me slowly.
“You believe that?” she asked.
I held her gaze for a second.
Then shook my head.
“No.”
She let out a short laugh, the tension in it breaking just slightly.
“Wow,” she muttered. “That was very reassuring.”
I shrugged again, a small smile pulling at the corner of my mouth.
“I didn’t say I had the right answer,” I said.
Then I added, a little more seriously this time, “Whatever it is… you’re going to be fine.”
She glanced at me.
I held it for a second before continuing.
“You’re the strongest woman I know,” I said. “And that’s based on a very short memory, but it’s still worth it.
That earned me another laugh.
“How nice,” she said.
I smiled a little.
We stayed like that for a moment longer, the tension easing just enough to make it feel normal again.
Then I saw him.
Alpha Alexander was already walking toward us.
I stepped back just a fraction, instinctively putting a bit of space between me and Luna Faye.

“Alpha,” I said, inclining my head slightly in acknowledgment.
Then I dipped my head again, respectfully. “Luna.”
My gaze flicked between them briefly before I stepped back fully.
“Excuse me,” I added.
