I exhaled slowly, letting my shoulders relax a bit, and began. “It was… unusual,” I said, trying to keep it light. “I… I was walking, and there was this… sound. A voice, chanting, I think. It was something I didn’t understand. I just… kept walking toward it, and there was this stone, an altar. And I–well, I lay down on it, and…” I hesitated, shivering faintly at the memory. “…and my wrists were cut. I don’t know. It was… odd.”
Alexander’s eyes went wide for a split second. He was about to say something when I heard Roman’s
voice.
“Blood… of the light.”
My head snapped toward Roman, startled. “What did you just say?” I asked immediately, my voice sharper than I intended. “Blood… light? What… where did you hear that?”
Roman froze, caught off guard, and his eyes widened slightly. I glanced at Alexander, who had paused mid–bite, setting his fork down, his eyes flicking between me and Roman.
“I… I heard the voice too,” Roman said finally, his voice low, almost a whisper.
I felt a chill creep up my spine, a tension knotting in my chest.
Alexander spoke first. “What do you mean…” he began, his voice alert. “…you heard the voice too?”
For a moment, Roman just sat there, his head slightly lowered, his fingers tightening around the napkin in his hand like he didn’t even realize he was doing it. Then, slowly, he lifted his gaze.
And that was when I saw it.
His eyes.
They weren’t just unsettled. They looked raw, like he hadn’t rested at all, like something had been clawing at him from the inside. There was something else there too–something that made my chest tighten without warning.
Anger… the quiet kind.
The kind that sits under everything and burns.
“I…” he started, but his voice caught slightly before he could finish. He swallowed, his jaw tightening just a
fraction before he tried again. “I had the same dream.”
The words landed heavily.
I didn’t say anything. I couldn’t.
My mind was still trying to catch up, still stuck somewhere between what I had just said and what he was
saying now.

Roman’s gaze flicked between me and Alexander briefly before settling again, like he was forcing himself to stay grounded in the moment.
“I saw it,” he continued, more firmly this time. “Everything you just described. The… altar. The stone. The…” His voice dropped slightly, his expression tightening just a little. “…the blood. The chant in a strange tongue.”
Something cold slid down my spine.
“I tried to move,” he said. “I tried to get to you, to stop it, but I couldn’t. I couldn’t move, I couldn’t speak… nothing.” He let out a short breath, almost like a sharp exhale of irritation. “I was just… stuck there.”
My mind had caught onto something else.
Something that refused to let go.
“Blood of the light.”
The words echoed again in my head, louder now.
I turned my head toward Roman slowly, my brows drawing together as that unease settled deeper into my
chest.
“You said something,” I began. “Before… just now.” I paused slightly, searching his face. “Blood and light.”
Roman’s eyes flicked toward me.
I held his gaze.
“The voice I heard,” I continued, my fingers tightening slightly around the edge of the table to brace myself. “It wasn’t in English. It wasn’t anything I understood.” My breath hitched faintly before I steadied it. “You
said you heard the same thing.”
I paused.
Then asked the question I wasn’t even sure I wanted the answer to.
“So how did you come up with that part?”
The room felt smaller suddenly.
Like the walls had shifted closer without warning.
Roman looked like he was trying to piece it together himself before saying it out loud.
“I don’t know,” he said finally.
The answer came slowly.
Carefully.
“I don’t know how,” he repeated, a little firmer this time, like he was trying to convince himself as much as
he was answering me. “I just… I could understand parts of it.”

I frowned, my chest tightening further.

“That doesn’t make sense,” I said, shaking my head slightly, the words coming out more instinctively than
anything else.
“I know,” Roman replied quickly, almost defensively. “It doesn’t. But it’s the truth.” He lifted his eyes to mine again. “It was like… like I wasn’t supposed to understand it, but somehow I did. Not all of it. Just… pieces.”
“Pieces,” I repeated under my breath, but the word didn’t settle.
It didn’t help.
If anything, it made it worse.
Because now it wasn’t just a strange dream.
It wasn’t just something I could brush off as my mind playing tricks on me.
It was shared… real.
Connected.
And I didn’t understand how, or why.
I pushed my chair back abruptly. I couldn’t sit there anymore.
“Where’re you going?” Alexander asked.
