The tequila burned my throat, and my lips twisted into a grin.

Across the table, Laura laughed as she collected the cards for the next deal. Her cheeks were flushed and her eyes were sparkling.
“You know… I used to give Logan a little bit of tequila when he was teething,” she said, leaning forward.
Logan groaned, shooting her a glare. “Ma…”
She smirked at him. “Oh, hush. It was only a tiny bit, rubbed on your gums. Calmed you right down.”
Talon chuckled, refilling my shot glass.
Logan rolled his eyes.
I laughed, feeling warmth spread through me – not just from the alcohol, but from the easy camaraderie. “That honestly explains so much,” I said, glancing between Laura and Logan.
Logan’s hand found mine under the table, and he gave it a quick squeeze. I glanced at him, meeting his green eyes for a second before he looked away.
“Alright,” Laura said, standing. “I’m gonna make coffee. Nobody needs to be hungover tomorrow.” She disappeared into the kitchen, humming softly.
The front door slammed open and my whole body flinched Then Scarlett’s voice shattered the illusion.
“Dad? Logan?”
“Kitchen,” Logan called back, getting up from the table.
—
for a split second I smelled gunpowder, saw Matt’s blood.
Scarlett appeared a second later, looking like hell. Her dark curls were a mess, her mascara smudged, and she smelled like whiskey and sweat.
“What’s wrong?” Logan asked, his jaw tight.
“Why the hell aren’t any of you answering your phones?” she said between ragged breaths. “It’s Maverick… He’s gone.”
Her eyes met mine, and I saw panic in them. “You need to get back to the clubhouse. Now.”
Logan looked like his brain had short–circuited. “What?”
Her next words hit me like a sledgehammer. “He got arrested like an hour ago. They found a kilo of coke in his truck.”
The room spun. My hands clenched into fists, my nails digging into my palms.
“The hell are you talkin‘ about?” Logan said, his words slurring a little.
Scarlett’s eyes filled with tears. “I don’t know. They’re saying he’s been dealing.”
“Bullshit,” Logan snapped. “Monty wouldn’t do that. He’d never
She cut me off, her voice rising. “Logan, I know. But that’s what they’re saying. And if we don’t do something—”

“Yeah,” she said, her voice breaking. “He’s the one leading the charge. He has Mav in custody and he’s tearing the clubhouse apart.”
Logan’s face went pale, his hands clenching into fists. “He would’t-”
“I know, Logan,” Scarlett said, almost yelling. “But Becker’s got efidence. And he’s claiming Mav confessed”
I felt my stomach twist into knots. The tequila that warmed me few minutes ago was now churning in my gut. I could see the panic in Logan’s eyes.
“We gotta get over there,” he said, his green eyes dark with worry “You stay here with my mom. It’s safer.”
I shook my head, my heart pounding. “No. I’m coming with you
“Hailey-”
“Logan, I’m not staying here. Becker’s doing this because I killed Matt. I’m a part of this now, whether you like it or not.”
“No,” he muttered. “He couldn’t’ve set this up in one day. He’s been planning it.”
“Whatever,” I said, crossing my arms over my chest. “Doesn’t matter. I’m coming.”
He exhaled hard, his jaw flexing as he stared at me. Finally, he nodded reluctantly. “Fine. But you stay close to me, understand?”
Talon pulled keys out of his pocket. “I’ll drive. You’re in no condition to ride.”
I climbed into Talon’s truck, sliding to the middle. Logan slid in after me, his jaw clenched so tight I thought it might crack. The engine roared to life, and Talon peeled out of the driveway. Gravel sprayed behind us as he followed Scarlett’s car.
My mind raced, but I couldn’t form a coherent thought. I knew Monty was innocent… that Becker probably chose now to strike because he knew the club was already reeling.
“This is so fucked up,” I murmured, more to myself than to anyone else.
“Becker’s full of shit. As usual. He’s just trying to rattle us.”
Talon’s grip tightened on the steering wheel. “He’s tryin‘ to tear the club apart from the inside. This ain’t just about Monty — this is about you,” he said, glancing at Logan. “And you,” he added, his eyes flicking to me before returning to the road ahead.
I swallowed hard. This was my fault. Even if I didn’t cause it, I was the one who set it in motion.
The drive to the clubhouse felt endless. My stomach churned with dread, and I couldn’t stop fidgeting. Logan’s hand found mine, his fingers lacing in. His grip was tight, almost painful… bu I needed it. It was the only thing keeping me coherent as the world spiraled out of control.
When we finally pulled up, my heart sank. The building was surrounded by cop cars, their lights flashing in the dark. Officers swarmed the area, some carrying boxes, others barking orders into radios.
Becker stood near the front door with his arms crossed. His expression was smug.
Logan was out of the truck before it came to a full stop. I scrambled after him, my legs like jelly. Talon and Scarlett followed close behind, their faces grim.
Becker spotted us immediately, his lips curling into a smirk. “Wel, well. Look who decided to show up.”
“Where’s Maverick?” Logan demanded, his voice dangerous.

“In your favorite cell.” Becker’s tone was dripping with satisfaction. “I’m sure you heard what we found in his truck. He’s facing some serious charges.”
“Bullshit,” Logan snarled, stepping closer. “He wouldn’t-”
“Wouldn’t what?” Becker interrupted, raising an eyebrow. “Deal rugs? You sure about that? Because he confessed.”
“Sure, you’re sayin‘ he did.” Logan was seething now. I could feel the heat rolling off of him from two feet away. “Call the station. Let me talk to him.”
Talon patted me on the shoulder and jerked his head toward the door. “I’m gonna go find Jake,” he murmured. “Stay with Logan.”
I nodded.
Becker’s smirk went wider, and I slipped my hand into Logan’s. You’re not talking to him,” Becker said smoothly. “He’s already confessed, Nash. It’s a done deal.”
Logan’s jaw twitched, and his grip tightened on my hand. “He didn’t do shit,” he growled, his voice low. “You planted that shit.”
Becker chuckled. “Careful with those accusations, Logan. You’re ready on thin ice. Wouldn’t want to make things worse for yourself or your girlfriend here.”
I went stiff, my stomach twisting. Becker’s eyes flicked to me, and I felt like a bug under a magnifying glass.
“Leave her outta this,” Logan snapped, stepping forward like he was about to throw a punch. Scarlett grabbed his arm, holding him back.
“Easy,” she muttered, her voice tight. “He’s baiting you.”
Logan shook her off, but he didn’t move any closer. His chest rose and fell hard, and I could tell he was barely holding it together.
Becker chimed in again, his tone mocking. “You really don’t think Maverick would betray your club? Right now he’s sitting in a cell, singing like a canary. Telling us everything he knows.”
“You’re lying,” I blurted out before I could stop myself. My voice shook, but I held Becker’s gaze. “Maverick wouldn’t do that. He’s innocent.”
“Innocent?” he laughed. “Funny word coming from you, Hailey. Didn’t you murder your fiancé in cold blood just last night?”
The words hit like a bullet. I saw Logan’s shoulders lock, the muscle in his jaw ticking once, twice-
Then his hand was gone from mine.
And his fist connected with Becker’s jaw.
It made a sickening crack, sending the detective sprawling on the pavement.
“You lying piece of-!” Logan roared, his voice raw with fury. He was on top of Becker in an instant, his fists raining down
blow after blow.
I froze, my heart slamming against my ribs as chaos erupted are and us.
Logan’s eyes were wild, his face wearing a type of rage I’d never seen before. Becker’s face was a bloody mess, his hands flailing as he tried to shield himself.
“Logan!” I screamed, but my voice was drowned out by the commotion.

Out of nowhere, Link and River appeared, grabbing Logan by the shoulders and yanking him back. His fists were clenched, his chest heaving as they pulled him away.
“Easy, brother!” River growled, struggling to hold Logan back. Lk had his arms locked around Logan’s torso, his face red
with effort.
Becker slumped against the brick wall, wiping blood from his lip with the back of his hand. “You’re gonna regret that, Nash,” he spat, his voice shaky but venomous.
“Would you shut the hell up?” River barked, his grip tightening on Logan.
But it was too late. Four officers rushed in with their guns drawn shouting orders at Logan to get down.
The flashing lights from the cop cars lit up the scene in streaks of blue and red, casting everything in a surreal glow.
“On the ground! Now!” one of them barked, his voice cutting through everything.
Logan’s jaw flexed, his chest rising and falling hard, but he didn’t resist.
Slowly, he lowered himself to his knees, his hands raised in surrender. Link and River stepped back, tense as they watched the officers move in.
I tasted bile as one of the officers grabbed Logan’s arms, wrenching them behind his back. The cuffs clicked into place, and something inside me broke.
“Logan,” I took a step forward, but Scarlett grabbed my arm, pulling me back.
“Don’t,” she muttered in my ear. “You’ll just make it worse.”
I stared at her, tears pricking at the corners of my eyes. “But they can’t-”
“They can.” Her grip tightened on my arm, her eyes darting toward Becker. “And they will.”
Logan’s eyes found mine as the officers hauled him to his feet. His expression was dark, but it softened a little at the sight of
- me.
“I’ll be fine, Ace,” he said, his voice steady despite everything. “Scarlett, can you stay with her please?”
Then he was ducking into the back of a cruiser, and my legs were giving out from under me.
I fell to my knees, tears streaming down my face as I watched Becker and the rest of the officers pile into their cars and drive
away.
—
The last thing I saw was Logan’s face through the window of the cruiser and then the dark took me.
