Craig and the others, catching on to the veiled insult, turned to look. Rafael spat, “You want to be her friend? Not in a million
years.”
Rafael thought, “Think you can call yourself Linda’s friend?
‘Do you even deserve it?‘
“All of you together aren’t even good enough for Linda,” Rafael sneered.
Homer’s face twisted in annoyance. He thought, “That is not what we are saying. We are just saying Linda’s biting off more than she can chew.
‘What’s wrong with these guys? Who the hell wants to be her friend anyway?‘
Still, wary of their power, Homer just said, “Clueless.”
Rafael was itching for a fight, but seeing Laura and Craig just standing firm, he had no choice but to fall in line.
He asked, “How can you guystake this?”
“Even if it’s killing us, we have to hold back. Can’t mess up Linda’s plans,” Craig replied quietly.
Rafael shot a look at Linda by the cave entrance. ‘Yeah, if we start something now, we’ll just ruin everything,’ he thought.
They all knew Linda was racing against the clock to scoop up all the treasures in this Veil. If they missed out on the Cloud Cave, they’d have to rush to the next spot.
Rafael thought, ‘We really don’t have time to mess with these guys. Just gotta endure.”
Rafael huffed loudly. He wasn’t throwing punches, but he sure wasn’t backing down in a war of words. “I know what’s guys are just jealous.”
“Don’t be shameless,” a person shot back.
“Yeah, I sure am shameless. Go on, show us what you’ve got,” Rafael sneered.
“You little punk.” one of the guys snapped.

Homer stepped in, “Don’t mess up the important business. She’s right here. Whether she can break the ward or not, we’ll know soon enough.
“Some folks are just waiting to be humiliated.”
The group shouted, “Exactly. Let’s see how a mere mana–Stoking Phase mage handles this advanced ward.
“Don’t get yourself hit with backlash and end up seriously hurt, or worse, lose your life.”
A person said, “Talking big means nothing. Let’s see some real skills.”
Another person said, “Come on, you bunch who always rely on outsiders. You dare laugh at us? Cowards.
“If you’re so great, do it yourself. You don’t even know the first thing about the ward. What right do you have to mock us?”
“Losers,” Rafael sneered, making an insulting gesture.

Craig and Laura watched, eyes wide in awe, then couldn’t help but applaud.
“Nice one,” Craig said.
‘Classic Rafael,’ he thought.
Both sides were yelling at the top of their lungs, faces getting red and tempers flaring.
But Matthew didn’t even bother with the argument. His attention was fixed solely on Linda, who stood still at the cave entrance. She hadn’t moved for a while.
Matthew said in a cold tone, “If you can’t break the ward, just give up.”
Linda glanced at Matthew, then placed her hand on the Hermit’s Sanctum.
Homer shouted, “Stop. That’s a dangerous Enchantment.”
The others screamed, “Get back!”
Homer and his group took off on their swords, but Matthew, Rafael, Craig, and Laura just stood their ground.
Right in front of Linda, a red Enchantment flared to life. It was a Tier 3 Slaughter Enchantment. But at that moment, it hadn’t fully unfolded yet.
Instead, it was contained within Linda’s grasp, taking the shape of a smooth, round sphere.
Countless charms darted about inside, like tiny fish gliding through a lake.
Guided by the subtle movements of Linda’s fingertips, they slowly dissolved.
The Tier 3 Slaughter Enchantment that had trapped Homer and his crew for days quietly unraveled between Linda’s hands.
By the time the last glimmer of light faded, everyone was left speechless, not even realizing what just happened.
“Did she just break the Enchantment?” someone stammered in disbelief.
“That only took a few seconds!‘ they thought.
Everyone just stared at each other, totally floored.
“No way, I gotta see this for myself,” someone muttered.
He stepped forward, sword in hand, cautiously probing the Hermit’s Sanctum, but nothing happened.
The group moved up to the entrance, pacing back and forth, and even struck the door with force.
All they got was a harmless rebound from the ward. The deadly aura was gone.
Homer was in a daze. “What kind of technique is that?
“Is that even how you’re supposed to break a Enchantment?”
Normally, when one tried to break a Enchantment, they had to wait for it to fully activate, then fight their way through the chaos, searching for a weak point.
But Linda just pulled the whole thing out, held it in her hand, and fiddled with it until it unraveled. It looked so easy that it was almost like child’s play.

A person said, “Wait, I remember that Matthew just said that there are a total of three wards here. The first one has to be the easiest one. Matthew is just giving her an easy way out”
“It’s just an easy one. Of course, she could handle it, another chimed in.
“Exactly, someone else agreed.
Rafael was still stunned, but as soon as he heard that, he shot back, “Seriously, don’t you feel embarrassed to say that?
“You guys have been circling this place for days and couldn’t even touch the ward, but Linda, who is in the mana–Stoking Phase, cracked it like it was nothing.
“Not only do you refuse to admit you’re weak, but you can’t even admit someone else is better than you?
Homer and his crew flat–out refused to admit it.
They just assumed that it was purely luck.
One of them sneered, “Who knows, maybe we already softened up the Enchantment with all our brute force, and Linda just swooped in and picked up the scraps.
“She just caught a break. Don’t get cocky over that.”
Everyone chimed in, nodding along.
Rafael was utterly speechless.
Linda didn’t bother with the rest. Her eyes were locked on Matthew.
While the others were desperately scrambling to defend their pride, Matthew just stood there, silent as ever.
“So?” Linda asked.
Matthew replied in a cold voice, “I underestimated you.”
Linda smirked. “You really are arrogant.”
Homer and his crew were fuming. “Why are you so full of yourself?”
Matthew held out his arm, stepping forward to block their way. “But I’m not giving up.”
He raised his hand and slammed it against the Hermit’s Sanctum door. Instantly, the second ward kicked in, slamming his power right back at him.
But Matthew didn’t back down. He shoved right back, sending his mana straight into the ward.
That move activated the entire Enchantment.
With a whoosh, soft blue charms glowed to life.
Everyone froze, staring in awe.
Matthew stood there, calm and collected, not a hint of worry on his face.
Rafael watched him, noticing how sure he looked, and whispered to Craig, “Isn’t this one way easier than what Linda just handled?”
Rafael just wanted to call out that Matthew wasn’t being generous at all. He just saved the easiest one for himself.

But Craig just shook his head. “Nope.”

Rafael shot him a look. “Why are you boosting the other guy and killing our vibe? Whatever. If it’s tougher, he’s toast for
sure.”
Rafael quickly shrugged it off and snickered to himself.
Craig’s mouth twitched.
Craig explained, “The Hermit’s Sanctum has three wards. Usually, it’s two Tier 3s and one Tier 4 stacked together. These wards are special.
“They stick around way longer than normal Enchantments. These are the real tests for a challenger.”
He pointed at the blue charms floating in front of Matthew and continued, “Those are the key. Some folks say they’re like a simplified version of the laws of nature and the universe.
“However, that’s just a rumor.
“You can only crack the ward if you really understand those charms. The one he’s up against now is the same level as the ward Linda just handled. Both are Tier 3.
“But the one he is handling is a defense ward.
“Usually, defense wards are trickier than kill wards, so cracking them takes way longer.
“Even though they’re both Tier 3, he’ll have to spend more time on it than Linda did.”
Craig paused for a moment, then said, “Maybe he figured Linda was weaker than him, so he let her go first.”
He added, sounding annoyed, “Or maybe he thought she’d mess it up, so he let her try first. Guess he just played himself.”
The three of them shot each other a look and nodded. “Yeah.”
Either way, they believed that folks from the High Sanctum of Archmagi just couldn’t be trusted.
That was their unspoken rule.
Homer and his crew were getting anxious. “Is Matthew really gonna lose?”
This one looks way more complicated than the last, they thought.
