13 Away From City Center

Ahshe’s a murderer! The girl in the passenger seat shrieke body trembling violently as she clung whiteknuckled to her boyfriend’s hand, eyes fixed in terror on Iris cutting a brutal swathe through the zombies outside

A cold glance from Iris swept the inside of their carairbags deployed, rendering it useless, just like the pair huddled within

She looked away instantly

Pressing forward, she kept a sharp eye out for another vehicle. No car meant running out of the city on foota risky, lastresort option

Just then, the car door behind her opened

Can you take us with you?The young man from the driver’s seat leaped out, desperation fueling his splitsecond plea

Get us to safety, and I’ll pay you! My dad’s the CEO of Nova Groupwe’ve got more cash than you could spend! Name any price!he shouted, voice cracking with urgency

Iris didn’t spare him so much as a glance, her pace never slowing as she forged ahead

Bncy, why are you begging her? She’s a murderere killed‘

dozens! We need to call the cops, have her locked up!the girl shrieked, hysteria rising in her voice

Shut up!he snapped, watching as Iris vanished into a narrow alley. Grabbing the girl’s arm roughly, he dragged her along in pursuit

Three sharp cracks of her shovel laterfive more zombies down -Iris finally broke free of the hospital zone, emerging into a quiet residential alleyway

Most residents remained trapped indoors here, sparing the area from largescale outbreaks

Sticking to uninhabited green belts, Iris dispatched the odd sanitation worker or morning jogger zombie with a single, precise shovel strike, her movements swift and effortless

Vehicles remained elusive, thoughno sign of a usable car anywhere

Worse, the two tagalongs continued to trail behind her, their bickering growing louder by the minute

Honey, this road is impossible! I can’t walk in heels!the girl complained, stumbling over loose gravel

Then go back! I don’t care! The man’s patience had frayed to a tygad

Tears pooled in her eyes at his cruelty. She tried her usual coquettish pout. Honey!”

But her charm fell flat

Why did I ever pick such a useless, brainless woman? You’re good for nothing but slowing me down! Die if you want, but don’t drag me with you! Get lost!he snarled

Her pretty face froze, then crumpled with hurt. Biting her lip, she watched as Iris mowed down zombies with each shovel swing and her boyfriend abandoned her to run ahead. Wordlessly, she limped after them, her high heels clicking unevenly on the pavement

After fighting her way through the side green belts, Irisluck finally turnedan opendoor delivery truck came into view in front of a convenience store

A car

Thank godanother minute without one, and she’d have been forced to hotwire a vehicle

She sprinted toward it, the couple scrambling to keep up behind her

To her relief, the keys still hung in the ignition, the doors wide 3/6

openno sign of the driver

A quick glance at the convenience store revealed it was empty too, blood splattered across the checkout counter in a gruesome

trail

The virus had hit here hard, she realized. Someone must have turned, chasing the other patrons and staff away in a panic

Pulling the keys from the truck, Iris acted on instinctnever leave emptyhanded

She darted into the store to loot. An extra minute spent clearing shelves now would save her from a hundred times more

danger later, when supplies would be scarce and zombies more

numerous

The zombie apocalypse wasn’t a temporary crisisit was forever

Once she escaped the city, things would only grow more desperate

No one ever had too many supplies

The decision was easy: she was taking everything

By the time the couple stumbled in, almost everything except

checkout area was gone

The small store took just two laps to clearevery last supply sucked into her spatial storage: chips, candy, toiletries, her favorite convenience store staples like readytoeat meals, bread pastries, and ice cream

Even the drink cooler was emptied out

Is this place even open yet?the girl panted, staring at the bare shelves in disbelief

Iris had known they were following. Before leaving, she feigned grabbing two buckets of water, carrying them to the truck in plain sight

Hey! You didn’t pay for those! And if you take all the food, what are we supposed to eat?the girl shouted, indignant

Her boyfriend cut her off with a harsh hiss. Are you insane?”

He rushed after Iris, desperation overriding caution. Miss, pleasetake me to Westside Manor! I’ll give you a million dollars! Cash!”

Iris climbed into the truck and slammed the door shut, a cold laugh escaping her. Do you really think money means anything right now?”

The man paled, the truth hitting him like a punch to the gut

Money was worthlesscompletely, utterly useless in this new world

He watched helplessly as the delivery truck’s engine roared to life, Iris driving away without a second glance

Honey, she ignored you! We should’ve called the police when we had the chance!the girl whined

Idiot! Do you think the police or money matter anymore? Wake up!”
