danger the entire way.
Just then, a half–bodied zombie latched onto his leg. Jack shoved the woman forward right away to break free.
“Whoosh!”
A bolt shot straight at his back.
Jack dodged it by instinct, the shaft grazing past him.
He realized right then that he couldn’t let go of his hostage. He had to keep her glued to his front and charge.
He grabbed the woman again, shoved her in front of him as a shield, and sprinted toward the bunker.
After running about half a mile down the narrow path, he finally spotted it hidden deep in the woods.
It was ringed with high wire fences, bristling with security cameras, and sealed shut by a massive, heavy iron gate.
Beyond the fence, he could vaguely make out rows of vegetables and chickens and ducks being raised inside.
He stared in shock at the fortifications and the fully equipped setup beyond them.

Someone had bought it and turned it into a full–fledged base fortress.
Had someone predicted the apocalypse?
But how was that even possible?
But just as confusion swirled in his head, the woman he was holding suddenly lunged and sank her teeth into his hand.
Watching through her crosshairs, Iris nearly burst out laughing.
She had spotted the bite on the girl ages ago.
That was the only reason she’d let Jack charge all the way to her front door.
She’d waited patiently for the girl to turn and give Jack a taste of his own medicine.
There was nothing more satisfying than watching someone dig their own grave.
It was poetic justice at its finest.
Smiling to herself, Iris kept her crosshairs trained on the rest.
If any of them tried to run, she would kindly send an arrow to help them along.

By “them“, she meant the zombies.
Iris had never claimed to be a good person.
She was a vengeful soul through and through.
Anyone who crossed her would pay it back a hundredfold.
From atop the tower, she kept the situation firmly under control. Once the group was completely wiped out, her gaze shifted to the truck.
That agent was still inside, hiding like a rat.
