Chapter 27 The Heavyweight
He really was cautious.
While everyone else ran for their lives, he hadn’t dared to move, staying put inside the truck.
Seeing this, Iris calmly nocked another bolt and aimed at his window.
“Whoosh!”
“Crash!”
The windshield shattered under the impact.
The zombies that had just finished tearing into the others snapped toward the sound and charged back to the truck.
That included Jack and the rest, now fully turned.
They swarmed over the truck, reaching through the shattered glass, clawing wildly at the only living person left inside.
At this moment, the man truly understood what suffocation felt like.
What regret felt like.

As the weakest link in the group, he had been desperate to prove his worth so they wouldn’t kick him to the curb.
His first thought had been this bunker, which he’d rented out a month ago.
He remembered the girl who had leased it.
She was young, inexperienced, and a clueless would–be entrepreneur.
She had even planned to grow mushrooms down there.
He had pictured them rolling up to find a bunker full of food and a pretty girl to toy with.
If luck was bad and she had turned, killing one female zombie would have been easy with their numbers.
If luck was good and she had not, their group would gain a woman, and he could have his fun with her.
She might have been stupid, but she was beautiful.
He had never imagined that this trip would end with all of them wiped out.
He had not even seen her face.

And then, through the flood of zombies pouring in, he caught sight of a lone figure in the trees ahead.
A girl stood there with her arms crossed, watching him coldly.
In that instant, it hit him.
Damn it–he was the idiot.
That “pretty girl” was the heavyweight they had been talking about all along.
She had been here the whole time. This territory belonged to
her.
But it was too late for regret. The zombies surged forward and tore his chest open.
“Woof! Woof! Woof!”
Summer drove the zombies back toward the outer perimeter.
Iris moved along the road, collecting the bolts she had fired earlier, then walked to the back of the truck.
With a casual wave of her hand, she swept all the supplies into her storage.
It was a banner day, a massive haul.

She treated it as compensation from those blind idiots who had picked the wrong fight.
On her way back, Iris hauled the truck to the side to shore up her barricades.
This time, no one was getting through.
After returning to the base, she laid out the spoils to check them over.
There were 20 large cardboard boxes in the truck’s bed.
There were ten full boxes of canned food, five boxes of bread and crackers, two boxes of bottled water, one box of assorted meats and vegetables, and one entire box of gold.
The price tags were still on it.
It was obvious they had looted a jewelry store along the way.
Looking at nearly 40 pounds of gold, Iris couldn’t help but marvel at how the human obsession with the yellow metal was bred in the bone.
Still, bringing gold was the right call. Even in the apocalypse, the only thing with real circulation value was gold.

She sorted the supplies and sent them into storage. On top of 4/7 that, she also confiscated a handgun.

It was a service model.
Those thugs must have raided somewhere they had no business being.
Iris felt she had done the public a real service.
After all, people as “righteous” as her were a rare breed these days. Any normal person would have run at the sight of that mob, desperate to avoid them. Only she would charge in, fight back, drive them off, and thoughtfully gift them a full zombie package so they would not go on to harm anyone else.
She could have simply scared them off and chased them out of her territory.
There had been no need to lure them in and wipe them out completely.
Someone as “righteous” as her was hard to come by.
She decided to count this as her reward for acting in the name of justice.
Otherwise, she really could not have lived with herself.
Iris happily accepted her spoils.
Just then, a system notification rang out in her head. 5/7

“Beep. Base Defense Battle detected x1.
“Enemies defeated successfully x6. Supplies seized: 20 crates. Congratulations. You have earned 26 points. System Shop unlocked.”
Iris‘ eyes lit up. A points shop!
To her amazement, a store interface appeared in her mind.
Rows of supplies filled the screen.
There was food, medicine, firearms, and even items for base
construction.
Each one came with detailed stats.
Under food, for example: Energy bar ×1. Instantly restored stamina. Kept hunger at bay for ten hours. Price: 5 points.
Bread ×1. Instantly restored stamina. Kept hunger at bay for 20 hours. Price: 8 points
First Aid Injector ×1. Stopped bleeding and relieved pain instantly. Price: 20 points.
She flipped to the weapons tab. Every kind of gun imaginable was listed there, complete with bonus damage and accuracy
buffs. 6/7

Every single item was a treasure.
The only problem was the price.
She had just 26 points to her name.
Iris stared longingly at the shop. For a moment, she even found herself looking forward to someone else trespassing on her land.
Right then, her surveillance system blared again.
She walked over to the computer and saw that the sky outside had already dimmed. Several large vehicles had stopped just beyond the range of her cameras.
The infrared feed showed people climbing out of the vehicles.
After a brief survey of the area, they began clearing out the nearby zombies.
Iris felt a surge of excitement.
No way. Were they really delivering themselves to her doorstep this fast?
