Seeing the scene, Irisusually cold, unfeeling heart suddenly tightened

For the most part, dogs were truly more loyal than humans, especially military dogs

Once they recognized a master, betrayal was impossible

Iris hugged Summer’s head tightly. Summer, I’m so sorry for everything in our last life.”

Woof!Summer responded crisply, nudging its head into her arms, doing its best to soothe her

Although it didn’t know why Iris felt so heavyhearted

Iris lingered there for a while, watching the dogs, before finally leading Summer back to her base

That evening, she brought the dogs a fresh supply of food and rebandaged their wounds

Summer, watching, growled and barked at them, clearly displeased

Woof! Woof! Woof!”

You bunch of freeloaders! Stop eating my master’s food!”

The military dogs whined but dared not defy it. Yet around Iris, they were unusually affectionate

Whenever she showed up, they would swarm her and linger by

her side

Two days passed in a blur

The dogs kept watch outside Irislane, their eyes eagerly scanning for anything. Whenever a vehicle passed, they would follow it for a bit, and upon realizing it wasn’t their master, they would sadly return to their posts

They also cleared the area of zombies

Any zombie approaching Iristerritory was dealt with swiftly and lethally. No intruder was ever allowed inside

Iris, seeing their unwavering resolve, kept up her routine. She delivered food once a day, checked their wounds, and then returned to her base

However, something happened on the evening of the third day

After finishing her base duties, Iris went to check on the dogs. From a distance, she saw them sprinting forward at full speed

themselves with excitement

She climbed to her usual lookout on the broken wall with Summer and scanned ahead. Out of the city’s direction, a line of green military vehicles emerged

At this moment, Iris understood

The dogs had finally found their master

The military dogs sprinted toward the approaching trucks, their sudden appearance catching the convoy off guard

One of the trailing vehicles screeched to a halt

A young soldier hopped out of the cab

He swept one of the dogs into a massive hug

The other dogs swarmed around him, barking and leaping in joyful surprise

One of the dogs dashed back to their old camp, snatching up a piece of fresh meat and bringing it to him

He looked surprised at the sight of the fresh beef, but soon he gently released the dogs

Hungry himself, he returned the meat to them and turned 3/6

Orders had come from the base. Survivors were to be given priority, and the dogs had to be left behind

It was a command, and there was no room for sentiment

The dogs, sensing the separation, lunged at his green truck one by one

Even from a distance, Iris could hear the panicked screams

Why are there dogs here?”

Get lost! Beat it!”

Virus! Watch out!”

Get these monsters away from us! Help!”

The soldier hurried back into his vehicle, engine roaring. The soldier slammed the door and gunned the engine. The dog he had just embraced leaped toward him, meat still in its mouth. But instead of a warm hug, it met a cold, hard door

Boom.”

The trucks roared forward, quickly catching up with the vehicles ahead

The dogs went wild, chasing frantically, but it was hopeless. 4/6

The distance only grew, and eventually, they couldn’t keep up

By the time the dogs limped back, they were covered in fresh wounds, and the spark of hope they had carried all day was

gone

They wandered aimlessly, looking like ghosts of their former selves. They truly had no one now

This was the cruel reality of the apocalypse. No one had a choice

Even if someone might have wanted to save them, in the end, survival meant making impossible decisions. In this world, when push came to shove, humans were chosen over dogs

This time, you’re finally coming with me, right?”

Iris appeared in front of them

I said it, I’ll never abandon a single one of you. Just trust me

once.”

She wasn’t some shining hero trying to save the world. She didn’t need people. She needed dogs

The pack of beatendown dogs paused for a moment at the sight of a human standing before them. Soon, Stumpythe dog Iris had spent so much to patch upstepped forward from the 5/6

It circled around her once, let out a soft whine, and flopped at

her feet

Once Stumpy joined, the rest of the pack surged forward, surrounding Iris

When Iris brought the military dogs back to her base, the familiar system chime sounded in her head

BeepDetected 15 base dogs! Loyalty: 100%

By the time she returned with the dogs, her base had undergone another upgrade. The main gate was reinforced, the barbed wire doubled in height, every mesh bristled with razorsharp spikes, and her bunker inside had been revamped -doors replaced, walls reinforced a hundredfold

From the outside, her base now looked every bit like a fortress
