Chapter 38 Logan
“Fifty–nine seconds!”
The only response to their pleas was Iris‘ cold countdown.
“Hey, hey! Come on, help us! We’re really in trouble here!”
“Fifty–eight seconds.”
“How can you be like this! We’re in danger because we were trying to save you!” one younger, less experienced operative shouted, anger flashing in his voice.
“Thirty seconds!”
Iris cut their time in half without hesitation.
The young operative almost burst into tears.
“Captain, she-”
“Forget it,” their team leader said, his tone flat. “Helping is a favor; refusing is her right. You shouldn’t guilt–trip her. Let’s pull back.”
“But, you are so badly hurt, and the rescue might not come in time. We have nowhere to retreat!”

At this moment, the operatives carrying their captain on their backs turned toward the base gate and begged.
“Please! I’m Logan Depp. We beg you! We won’t step into your base; just save our captain! Name it, anything you want, we’ll get it for you!”
Iris, driving, froze.
On her phone’s live feed, she saw a man she knew all too well.
Logan.
It really was Logan.
The others also followed and begged her.
Seeing his comrades begging, the young man that Logan carried on his back felt like a giant hand was squeezing him from all sides, a pain sharper than any wound he had. He wanted to tell them to stop begging, but before he could speak, darkness swallowed him. He had lost too much blood and
fainted.
Then, with a sharp “Screeech“, a whirlwind of fallen leaves rose as the vehicle came to a sudden stop.
Everyone froze in shock. A super–advanced armored vehicle,
the likes of which none of them had ever seen, had screeched to 2/6

a halt right in front of them.
A swirl of fallen leaves and dust floated down as the vehicle’s
door slid open from the inside.
A girl in a combat suit jumped out.
Her hair was tied into a high, sharp ponytail. Her skin was flawless. She was breathtakingly beautiful, and the fitted combat suit showed off her tall, graceful figure.
She looked fierce and stunning–absolutely striking.
She walked straight to the center of the group and stared at Logan.
Logan froze, stunned, unable to move as she examined his face carefully.
Iris‘ eyes sparkled brighter the more she looked, and her excitement grew. She gripped Logan’s chin tightly, almost bouncing with delight. “Logan!”
“Yes, it’s me,” he said.
Logan, caught in her grip, found himself unable to meet her
gaze.
Maybe it was her scorching smile or the way her hands burned

The other operatives stood dumbstruck.
This actually works!
“Alright, come in!”
Iris waved a hand, pushing open the door behind her and letting them in.
At this moment, everyone felt like they were walking on air.
Every eye was on Logan, and the looks they gave him were loaded with meaning.
Having a good–looking ally could really come in handy at critical moments.
Logan’s normally cold expression couldn’t hide his
embarrassment. He tightened his hold on the captain behind him and forced a calm tone for the surrounding operatives. “Get inside, now!”
That snapped them back to reality.
The most important thing was to get in.
They helped each other along, lifting Milo Thimbleton, who had fallen into the trap earlier, and together they followed Iris
into her base.

Once inside, their jaws dropped again.
Outside, corpses were strewn everywhere, order had completely collapsed, and food was unbelievably scarce.
But here…
Chicks and ducklings thrived in their coops. At a glance, the eggs in the nests were overflowing.
The vegetables in the fields were growing so vigorously they seemed on the verge of over–ripening if not harvested immediately.
And the fish and shrimp in the ponds kept flipping and splashing.
“Dinner’s served!”
Everyone was shocked.
They were even more stunned as Iris emerged from the bunker carrying a huge bowl of fresh, bone–in beef, setting it down for her dogs.
Damn! That was insane!
Out there, they had been going days on end with barely enough to eat, and here this woman’s dogs were feasting like kings! 5/6

“Logan, have you eaten?”
After feeding the dogs, Iris looked at him.
Logan’s neck flushed deep red. “W–we still have a little food on us,” he stammered.
“So, you haven’t eaten. I’ll cook then.”
Iris turned and walked toward the bunker.
Logan hurriedly called after her. “Miss, do you have any medicine? Our captain’s about to collapse!”
“Yes! Can you at least save our captain first?”
Only then did Iris leisurely glance at the person Logan was carrying on his back.
She smirked. “Save him? What’s in it for me?”
