“Powers mainly fall into three categories. The most common are enhancement–type abilities like increased speed or strength. Then there are elemental powers covering fire, water, earth, metal, and wood. And finally, there are the really rare variant abilities.
“Variant powers include lightning, ice, healing, psychic abilities, and some super niche stuff that nobody really knows about until they run into it.”
Iris held nothing back while explaining all this to Logan.
This was her guy now, not some random outsider. She was teaching him all this so he’d know how to level up his own abilities down the road.
“All powers start at the beginner level, but as people train and understand them better, they naturally progress through different tiers. No matter what tier you reach though, there’s always going to be a hierarchy between
power types.

than standard elemental powers, and elemental powers beat out basic enhancement abilities.”
In her previous life, Iris had been completely ordinary. She’d never awakened any powers at all. In the early days that hadn’t been a huge problem since powers weren’t that impressive yet.
Iris had been ruthless and cunning enough to carve out her own territory without any special abilities.
But as time went on, the gap between metahumans and regular people kept growing wider and wider. Eventually, Iris had hit her ceiling as just a small squad leader at a
minor base.
If she’d had even one measly power, she could’ve climbed way higher in the base hierarchy in her last life.
Because she’d never had powers herself, there was a ton of information about them that she’d never learned firsthand. She knew powers could be strengthened somehow, but she’d never figured out the exact method. The only clue she’d had was that it probably involved crystal cores somehow.

After the rescue squads pulled out, Logan’s unit had stayed behind to keep fighting because command never gave them clearance to withdraw. He still didn’t know what the higher–ups wanted with all those cores.
Eventually, things had gone sideways and they’d barely escaped with their lives before stumbling onto Iris‘ territory looking for help.
Iris frowned as she processed what Logan had told her.
Did the military discover crystal cores this early?
In her previous life, Base K1 had been famous throughout the eastern region. They’d always struggled with food shortages, but everything else about them had been impressive, especially their metahuman.
The metahumans they’d trained had been the strongest in the entire eastern territory.
Now that she thought about it, maybe that success had been connected to them researching crystal cores so early in the apocalypse.
“Let’s head back,” Iris said.

“Alright.”
Logan climbed into one of the big delivery trucks they’d sent down earlier, while Iris got behind the wheel of her armored vehicle with the fuel tanker still attached. They’d had a pretty productive day overall.
When they got back to base, Iris told Logan to go kill a fresh chicken and catch some fish for dinner. Logan didn’t ask any questions and just got straight to work.
The thought of killing fresh chicken and fish for dinner even made Logan’s steps a bit quicker.
Meanwhile, Iris headed back to the bunker to do some serious research on her points and crystal cores.
She opened up the system shop panel and exchanged all the crystal cores she’d collected today. Aside from that one Level–2 mutant beast core she was keeping, she’d gathered 16 cores today.
Combined with the 44 she’d gotten from Damon earlier, that brought her total up to 60 crystal cores. Just 40 more and she could unlock the next big reward package.

Iris hesitated for a moment but decided not to exchange her Level–2 mutant crystal core just yet. Trading in a Level–2 core would definitely give her more points, but it wouldn’t count toward her total core exchange number.
She’d save it for now.
Looking at her point balance, she saw that between expanding her territory and exchanging cores, she’d racked up a total of 18145 points. She clicked without hesitation and finally bought that AK she’d been eyeing
forever.
The moment the rifle appeared in front of her, Iris felt pure satisfaction wash over her. Yes, finally got you, baby!
Then she remembered there was a special interface that required 5000 points to unlock. She opened it up right
away.
The second she unlocked this section, Iris noticed everything inside had a countdown timer attached to it. The first item on the page glowed gold.
