Chapter 61 Immediate Payback
Iris scanned the crowd on the rooftop. There were 20 to 30 people, young and able–bodied, both men and women ranging from their twenties to forties. No elderly or children in sight. Good demographic structure and ready–made quality labor.
Ever since she’d started developing her territory, Iris evaluated people from a leader’s perspective.
From that angle, people weren’t categorized by good or evil, only by their labor capacity.
Everyone was a fundamental production unit and every person could contribute to the base. What she was looking at right now was a batch of prime working–age labor.
However, right now…
“We’re not saving them.”
Iris said it decisively. It was getting too late today. Even if she wanted to absorb this batch of able–bodied workers, it would have to wait until tomorrow. Retreat now and come back tomorrow would be a smart move.
The moment Iris finished speaking, Logan hit the gas and drove away. He was just a ruthless execution machine. Whatever Iris Jaia, that was what happened.

At that moment, the people trapped on the rooftop saw Iris‘ vehicle preparing to leave, and they all panicked instantly.
“Wait, don’t go!”
“Don’t leave us here!”
“You can’t just abandon us!”
Their screaming attracted the zombies inside the factory below them. Behind them, the heavy metal door started shaking violently as something pounded against it from the other side.
These people had been stuck on this rooftop for a long time now. Luckily for them, this was a grain processing warehouse, so they had plenty of food stored up here. When they’d first fled to the roof, they’d managed to grab enough supplies to barely survive until now.
But behind that chained metal door were hundreds of zombies packed together like sardines. After being trapped for over a month, the zombies had gone completely feral, snarling and hammering at the barrier nonstop. The chains holding the door shut were already starting to give way.
Before today, these survivors had been careful not to make a sound. They’d huddled silently in the corner of the rooftop, trying to reduce their presence as much as possible.

their eyes lit up with hope. When they saw Iris‘ group preparing to leave, they immediately called out for help.
What they hadn’t expected was a flat refusal.
“Mr. Moore, what are we gonna do?” The woman who’d been shouting for help turned to the fat man beside her.
The fat man’s name was Dana Moore. Before all this, he’d just been a low–level security captain at the factory. When the apocalypse hit, he’d escaped to the rooftop with a group of survivors, and thanks to his physical advantages and security background, he’d quickly become the de facto leader of everyone up here.
After awakening his power, he’d become even more tyrannical. Everyone had to submit to him and follow his orders without
question.
Dana hadn’t really wanted to leave before. If they weren’t running low on food, he never would’ve asked Iris for help in the first place. But they’d asked, and those two had the audacity to refuse them. “If they won’t save us, then they’re not getting out of here either!”
He pulled a small button from his pocket. His beady eyes gleamed as his thick fingers pressed down on the activation switch.

won’t be able to escape either!” A skinny man tried to stop him.
Dana slapped him so hard he went flying, then grabbed him by the collar and dangled him in midair. “If I’m gonna die, everyone’s dying with me! Isn’t that right, everyone?”
The others immediately chimed in. “That’s right! If they won’t save us, they deserve to die!”
“Kill them!”
“If we can’t live, neither can they!”
Dana smiled with satisfaction and casually tossed the man he’d been holding over the edge. At the same time, he pressed the button, and every factory door in the building burst open simultaneously.
In an instant, guttural snarls and howls erupted from below. The zombies had been starving for so long that their cries sounded almost inhuman.
The man Dana had thrown fell right in front of the main entrance. The second the doors opened, a massive horde of zombies came pouring out and surrounded him completely,

But they were still starving. They needed to eat more!
The man’s screams were quickly silenced.
Everyone on the rooftop watched in horror, their eyes wide with fear, but deep down, they all thought the same thing. Good. That was exactly what should have happened.
After releasing the zombies, Dana turned his attention to Iris‘ vehicle. He crouched down and pressed both hands flat against the rooftop surface. His beady eyes locked onto the path Iris‘ car was taking. At the closest point between the vehicle and his position, he suddenly pushed down with all his strength.
“Think you can run? Not happening!”
The armored vehicle beneath Iris suddenly lurched hard, lifting the entire front end off the ground.
The alarm system started blaring immediately, and the display told her exactly what she already knew. Something had pushed up from underneath and jammed the vehicle in place,
It had to be an Earth–type Power.
