Chapter 63 Reconnaissance Drone Exchange
At least they hadn’t tried to force a rescue or pull the same crap Dana’s group did, causing trouble after their rescue attempt failed. All of Dana’s people had died because of it.
But now they had a different problem. They looked down at the factory floor where Dana had released the zombie horde in her attempt to stop Iris from leaving.
The sun was sinking below the horizon, and zombies were wandering out from every corner of the factory.
As darkness fell, all the zombies started moving faster. They’d sensed living people in the building and were heading straight for them, moaning and reaching up with outstretched arms.
The zombies pressed against the walls and tried desperately to climb up.
Within minutes, their building was completely surrounded by layers and layers of undead. There was no way through.
Kevin noticed several zombies that were noticeably faster than the others, with way better agility too. They were trampling over their fellow zombies to reach higher ground, scaling the wall like Fabjd rock climbers trying to reach the rooftop.

walls, and unlike Dana’s idiotic group, they hadn’t pissed off those powerful strangers and drawn the zombie horde directly to them.
They were up on the rooftop, and for the moment at least, they seemed relatively safe. The zombies couldn’t climb up here very easily.
That’s when Jenna Dawson grabbed her husband’s arm. “Kevin, look over there…” Her voice shook as she pointed.
Kevin Dawson followed her gaze and felt his stomach drop. Down where Dana had jumped and supposedly died, a figure was struggling to its feet. Its belly had been torn open and half its face was missing, but it was moving.
Dana hadn’t died instantly from the fall. He’d landed hard and the starving zombies had swarmed him immediately, tearing into him while he was still alive.
His large frame had kept him going just long enough to turn before they could completely rip him apart.
The zombie that used to be Dana let out a piercing shriek. It looked around wildly and spotted the survivors on the neighboring rooftop.
Then it charged toward them at terrifying speed. When it reached the base of their building and saw the mount

let out a bellowing roar.
The ground beneath its feet suddenly erupted upward, forming a massive dirt mound over 10 feet high.
All the other zombies saw the opportunity and immediately started climbing over each other to reach the mound. Now they finally had a way up.
The survivors on the rooftop watched in horror, completely paralyzed with fear.
“What do we do?” Jenna cried out.
Meanwhile, Iris and Logan made it back to base with the dogs without incident.
When they’d left the factory, plenty of zombies had chased after their vehicle, but they’d all fallen behind after a few hundred yards.
Iris kept her foot on the gas the entire way back and didn’t stop once, even when they ran over zombies. She wasn’t about to waste time checking for crystal cores right now.
It was getting late. The factory was an hour and a half drive from base, and by the time they got back, it would be completely dark.

At 7:30 PM, they finally pulled into the base. Same routine as always. Both of them showered first, then Logan headed to the kitchen while Iris went into her bunker to count their haul.
Today’s total came to 1148 crystal cores. All of them were Level 1
cores.
Crystal cores came in different grades. Level 1 was the most common type, showing up in roughly one out of every three zombies.
Level 1 zombies weren’t particularly dangerous compared to what came later. They were definitely stronger than regular zombies though, like that mutated Level 1 zombie Iris had killed in the villa early on.
They were faster and more agile than normal zombies, but still killable. Any regular person with basic combat training could take one down.
Level 2 zombies were a completely different story though. Their strength and speed far exceeded even a healthy adult male. It usually took multiple people working together to bring one down. Their cores were about the size of a quail egg.
Level 3 zombies were basically impossible for normal humans to handle. Those were fights for metahumans only. Their cores could grow as large as a golf ball.

Zombies reached Level 2 or 3 through specific factors. The first was cannibalism. That Level 2 zombie Iris had fought on the highway had probably gotten there by eating other zombies.
The entire stretch of highway had been nearly empty except for around the gas station. That Level 3 zombie had most likely herded all the others there and devoured them.
The second factor was superpower evolution. Zombies could develop powers too, and when they did, their level jumped dramatically.
The strongest zombie Iris had heard about in her previous life was a Level 8 zombie king with multiple superpowers in the
eastern region.
Supposedly, it had at least three different abilities and controlled the border area between three major cities.
Of course, she’d only heard the stories. She’d never actually seen
- it.
She wasn’t important enough for that. In her past life as a regular human, Iris had never been allowed anywhere near battlefields that dangerous. She’d always played it safe, only taking missions she was 100% confident she could complete.
Anything with even a hint of extra risk, she turned down flat.

stronger superpower users. Iris was cautious as hell and never gambled with her life.
Anyway, back to the present. Right now, most zombies were still Level 1. Higher grades were rare, and that Level 3 zombie she’d killed before was extremely unusual to encounter this early on.
She looked at her pile of 1148 crystal cores and exchanged 1000 of them for points, keeping 100 aside to extract evolution liquid later. Each Level 1 core was worth 100 points and counted toward the crystal core bundle rewards.
“Congratulations, you’ve earned 104000 points!”
Combined with her previous 30000–some points, she was sitting at nearly 140000 total. Iris rubbed her hands together excitedly. Finally, she had enough.
She immediately pulled up the limited–time shop window and found the reconnaissance–strike integrated drone system. She hit the exchange button without hesitation.
“Congratulations, you’ve acquired the reconnaissance–strike integrated drone system!”
A piece of incredibly advanced military hardware materialized right in front of her. At the same moment, her entire base started transforming.
