Chapter 14
Jessica
“What do you mean, Cassie?” I whispered into the phone, trying to hide in my bathroom so no one could eavesdrop on this conversation. I didn’t trust any of Alpha Heir Travis’s staff to not report back to him. I had to be careful.
“She has a kid. This is terrible news for all of us.” Cassie responds. There is cabana music in the background and I wonder if she is at the vacay spot again. The familiar flare of jealousy twisted my stomach into more knots. It had been so long since I could afford to get into a place like that. After the stunt we pulled with Rue, I thought life was on the rise while hanging out with Cassie. She made life so fun with the parties, the food, the clubs, and, of course, the incredibly hot guys. I got into all the hottest places, wore the most amazing outfits, and felt like Cassie was like a sister to me.
A year later, one of her boy-toy leftovers wanted to hook up. Cassie had already ghosted him, so I figured, why not? Cassie was pissed, claiming I stole him from her, and she told my parents almost everything I’d done. My parents were furious, and I was kicked out because she was offended. When the dust settled, Cassie had the guy wrapped around her finger again, and she would invite me to be her bestie. With me kicked out and living on a tiny allowance, I can’t afford the scenes she likes anymore. I learned really fast that money was everything in this world and you had to do anything to get it, keep it, and grow it.
For too long, I’d been left in desolation at my parent’s extra rental. Imagine my surprise when Alpha Heir, Travis, showed up and started asking about that night with Rue. I was terrified the truth would come out and I would suffer more consequences at the hands of Cassie’s schemes. However, he mistook me for Rue. I knew this was a ticket back into the good life. Back into the limelight with enough power now to possibly take Cassie down a peg or two. So I seized the opportunity, pretending to be Ru, and will figure out how to make this permeate. However, if she has a kid and it turns out to be Travis’s, then I’m screwed. “Cassie, do you know how old the child is?” O
Cassie scoffed, “Do I look like a nanny? Of course, I don’t know how old the kid is… like 3, maybe?”
I suppressed the urge to strangle this bitch, “Cassie, you need to find out.”

Chapter 14
“Why does it matter, Jess? I’ll figure out how to get rid of her, just like I did last time.” A man’s voice in the background caught Cassie’s attention, and her giggles grated on my last nerves. This woman is so dumb, yet the schemes she comes up with are so intricate that barely anyone knows what she is doing. How her Stepfather hasn’t figured out that she and her mother are conning him out of money and using his name to do illegal things is beyond me. “Anyway, did you know that Sarah was caught doing blow off some bar guys’
abs?”
Her cackling laugh reminded me that I needed to always be on guard. I played the part of a good-time bestie to avoid her wrath. I turned on my mean tone, “No way! What an idiot.”
“Yeah, I filmed the whole thing on her phone and posted it to her socials. People really shouldn’t be so naive and trusting. So Sarah is out for the summer season, and I can take her date to the bonfire kickoff!”
“What happened to Sarah?” Instead of the fearful one I felt inside, I put on a bored tone. Cassie was good at removing obstacles in numerous ways.
“Her parents sent her to rehab or something. I don’t really care as long as she is out of
my way.”
“So, are you going to find out how old Rue’s kid is?” I asked.
“Jessica! Why are you so caught up with that bastard?” Cassie seethed.
I took a deep breath to avoid sounding off, “I just want to ensure that the kid isn’t a
product of that night. If Alpha Steve brings Rue back under the title, the kid will also be an heir. If someone steps forward to claim the child is theirs, then they will hold power over you in the rights to Alpha.”
Cassie was quiet on the other end. I worried with my thumb, wondering if I said too much. Cassie had a wicked temper, and it could go off at any moment. Then the line sounded with movement: “You’re absolutely correct. Give me a second.”
There was a lot of background noise going on. Then I heard Luna Amber’s voice before Cassie got back on the line, “Shit, Jessica. Rue apparently found out she was pregnant right after that night. Steve said he wanted nothing to do with the child. Luckily, we don’t know whose room that was, so we are in the clear.”

Chapter 14
I could feel my lungs deflating as I gasped for air. Cassie didn’t know who the man was, but I did. I knew exactly who it was because he had shown up on my doorstep two weeks ago. After all, Rue used the rental address to pawn the man’s amulet that she stole. If Travis discovers who Rue is, my easygoing life will be over for the second time. That night, I succumbed to repetitive nightmares of Travis finding out my real identity and woke up in cold sweats. I needed this to work out, but the images of Travis banishing me left my body shivering in fear. My lies could cost me my life.
After waking up the third time, I shoved the Egyptian cotton sheets off me and began pacing. I would find out where Rue was and ask her if she remembered anything from that night. That is the only way that I’ll be able to move past these nightmares and secure my rightful place beside Travis. My life of luxury wasn’t over yet.
